Book Blurb
This summer, I'd planned to celebrate my eighteenth birthday in Europe with my fellow Manhattanites--Taddy Brill, Blake Morgan, and Vive Farnworth--until I caught my boyfriend screwing my mother. According to the police report, this vomit-inducing incident happened around the same time I'd supposedly blown-up my mother's penthouse. Like I'm walking around Soho with a stick of dynamite in my Louis Vuitton purse--not! Now, my besties and I are in jail.
Officer Ford Gotti, the Harley-wheelin' biker cop who arrested us, keeps sticking his perfectly-sculpted nose into my case. His inked body is jacked like a superhero, and he says I can trust him. He wants me to fess up. I won't. Not again. Why should I? My friends and I had a previous stint in juvie that nearly destroyed us. I gotta protect them and keep my mouth shut. Right? --Lex Easton, women's studies major, motorcycle enthusiast, and virgin.
The Undergrad Years is a New Adult contemporary miniseries about first loves, independence, and everlasting friendships.
My Review
Lex starts out planning in her head how she's going to lose her virginity to her gorgeous boyfriend until she finds him in bed with her mother. If that's not bad enough, Lex stands there watching them...do it, giving reader's all the dirty details for what seems like much longer than was really necessary.
She packs her belongings up and plans to leave only to be stopped by the boyfriend and she confronts him about what he did. After a nasty confrontation, she leaves but not before she burns some memento's she never wants to see again. What she didn't realize is that the fire didn't go out and with all the oxygen tanks sitting around that her mother uses to look younger, the place explodes and her mother is mildly hurt.
She and her friends get stopped by a cop and taken to jail because of the explosion and most of the rest of the story line is of them being in jail, how they are going to get out and how they finally get out. But the cop that pulled her over continues to poke around her and the case. When the cop pulls her over her fantasy mind starts up and remember this girl is just a day shy of her 18th birthday and still a virgin but this is just a little of what goes through her mind when pulled over by a cop she was flirting with...
"OMFG! Down there, he was as hard as a rock. I was afraid it was gonna get loose and slap me across my face. I swallowed the lump in my throat."
I started out reading this thinking it would be an interesting romance book involving a girl who has a troubled mother, interesting friends and a hot cop poking around her case. Instead what I read was a girl who just turns 18, makes bad choices, has worse taste in men and the cop who should have been the hero of the story turns out to be kinda creepy. Her hero cop comes off as a creepy stalker cop with control issues. He gives her two choices after learning the truth, either come with him to be his sex slave or turn herself in to the police about lying. Seemed very sketchy to me and it gave Officer "God" a real weird personality in my opinion.
The story started out interesting and could have been really good but I found it to be a little irritating. But it was also kinda sad because Lex's mother was really messed up on drugs and alcohol. The police officer comes across as being a bit stalkerish and creepy the ending felt rushed and incomplete which takes away from a story since when I read a romance book, I want a real ending and a HEA *Happily Ever After*.

I give this book 2 out of 5 stars.
