Apartment Life #417

This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that have gone on in and around my apartment complex and in my neighborhood in the past 27 years that I've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 27 years here in a weekly blog post.

Life Update:

My daughter saw her cardiologist, she said the congestive heart failure can be reversed. They gave her medicine to keep her blood pressure low so her heart doesn't over work and can heal itself. Don't know how long that will take. The medicine makes her dizzy when she stands up though. Then the cardiologist said she can't see her again and will have to see a different cardiologist because come May 1st, they will no longer be accepting her insurance. So now she has to wait to get ANOTHER referral for a different cardiologist. And she is still waiting for a referral for Pain Management and the Pulmonologist. But at least we got a little good news.

My therapist increased both my anxiety meds, antidepressants and anti-psychotics since the hallucinations have been so bad lately with the increased stress, so hopefully that will help.

On Tuesday there were 2 police cars parked behind the ambulance in that driveway, plus the police truck driving up to the scene on the street. People standing around near me told me that a woman stabbed her boyfriend in the arm and he called 911. She had already been arrested and taken to jail when I got out there. I did see him get in the ambulance. His arm was all bandaged up as he got in the ambulance.

The police truck parked in front of the apartment complex a moment later.

Our apartment manager has talked to the people in this RV twice that I've seen. The maintenance guys have told them to keep their trash off the property, and they keep piling up more and then yelling at anyone who asks them to move it. I've seen police talking to them at least once. I'm surprised that the police haven't told them to move. It looked like they stole a couple of cribs from somewhere and broke them apart and the wood was just sitting out there. They had a bbq going late one night when I walked the dog. I think they used the wood from the crib for that. There's also a chair/seat on wheels against the wall. The old guy in the RV sits there late at night making noise. If I lived in those apartments, I would be calling the police. All the homeless people have been going to and from this RV. My bet is they are probably selling drugs out of the RV.
---

At the end of my street on Thursday, I saw the police in front of this apartment complex. Straight behind the cop car is the entrance to the alley for that complex and I saw at least one fire engine and an ambulance back there. 3 more police cars drove down that street but didn't stop out front, I don't know if they went in the alley or not, but I would bet money they did. Who knows what happened.

Back in 2022 in this post I told you about the old couple who would sit outside all morning in their truck and gossip and talk to everyone in the neighborhood. They have been here a few years longer than me, about 30 years in total. So I've known them a long time. 2 years ago Dorothy, the wife had a stroke and was in the hospital and then rehab for over a year. She came home and her husband, Donny needed to have a hip replacement. They have no other family so they asked Sean, a homeless man who had been friends with them for years if he would move in with them and help take care of both of them. He said yes and has been there for about 2 years. Other homeless people come and go and help out over there as well.

Well last month the husband, Donny passed away in his sleep next to his wife. Dorothy is in bad health and when I saw the fire department and ambulance across the street, I worried something had happened to her. I talked to Sean and he said she was having a hard time breathing and the port in her arm for her dialysis had been pulled out somehow when she was moving around in bed and so she went to the ER. She waved at me when she saw me outside. Sean said she's doing alright and should be home soon after they surgically put in a new port for her dialysis. Her health is just not good. She and her husband Donny are both in their 80's.

I feel bad for Sean because if Dorothy does pass on, he'll be out on the street again. He's been helping her and her husband taking care of them, driving their truck and taking them to and from doctors appointments ect.

So I hope she's alright and can come home soon and will be around for a while.

The high this week was 82F/27C
The low this week was 55F/12C

So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

  1. Great news that the heart issue can be reversed. But it's awful that getting healthcare involves all these bureaucratic problems. It's an extra burden on people who are already hurting and stressed.

Low blood pressure will naturally make a person dizzy or weak from standing up or exertion. Unfortunately it sounds like a price that just needs to be paid until her heart condition has improved.

    1. Yes it is. I'm glad that it can be reversed in time. Healthcare shouldn't be this hard.

  2. I'm sorry you need extra medication but I was glad to read that you're able to get it and hopefully it will make you feel much better during this stressful time. It certainly seems that Sean has been a big help and it would be a shame if he had to be turned out onto the street again anytime soon. Nice to know that some of the homeless people are also very thoughtful people

    1. I hope so. Sean is great with Dorothy. He can pick her right up out of the wheelchair and sit her in the truck too. I'm sure that's helpful. Some of them are. I haven't really had a problem with most of the homeless people around here.

  3. Won't accept her insurance anymore? That is messed up. And doctors and insurance companies wonder why people hate them so much. Hope your daughter can get to the specialists she needs soon.

    1. I know. The first referral to pain management didn't accept her insurance either. I hope so too.

  4. I'm glad it can be reversed. My wife's still recovering from post surgery complications and she gets depressed and pessimistic. She hasn't been doing everything she's supposed to do but mind traps her into thinking her situation is permanent. I think she's got maybe another month before she's back to normal.

  5. I'm no surprised you're stressed and anxious. I hop your daughter can get the help she needs and not have to keep moving from one specialist to another. What a mess!
Poor Sean, poor Dorothy - some people have so many problems to overcome.

    1. Everyone has problems and it's good to remember that when dealing with people out in public. Everyone has their own problems to deal with.

  6. The good news is that your daughter's heart can be healed, but that stinks about insurance. hope she gets a new cardiologist soon. And what a week on your street. A tow nearby to us passed a law about trailers parking and staying parked for more than a couple of days. Its tough out there, isn't it? Hope this week starts off good for you.

    1. Hopefully her heart heals soon. it's always crazy here. RV's are not supposed to be parked on the street for more than a few days at a time. I don't know why the cops aren't makeing them move.

  8. Hi, Mary!

It's good to know that you and your daughter are both doing somewhat better than you were a month ago when I came around. Even so, it makes me sad to think of all the health challenges the two of you face. Seems like conditions around your neighborhood were trending in a positive direction a year ago. Nowadays, you are once again plagued by episodes of violence and tense, volatile situations. I'm so sorry about that. With her health challenges and being in her 80s, the outlook doesn't seem favorable for your friend Dorothy or for Sean her caregiver. Nevertheless, I wish them well.

I will be back with a new post at Shady's Place this coming Thursday and hope you and my buddy Falcor can come over. I wish you and your daughter better days ahead, dear friend Mary!

  9. There are hiccups in every health care system, but the American system seems too difficult sometimes.

  12. Mary, that is good news regarding your daughter, and you should feel better with your medication increased at this time....good luck to you both.
Not a good position to be in Sean, he would be so used to living inside now so I hope all goes well. Shame about that vehicle still being there and you are probably correct about them selling drugs.
    Take care.

  13. Sean sounds like a really good person. It would be nice if he could get some sort of recommendation for a job working with the elderly if Dorothy doesn't make it.

I'm glad that your daughter had a bit of good news, but the insurance business sucks.

  14. It's great that the cardiologist gave Lizzie hope, but gah - I can't believe she has to find another one due to insurance issues. No wonder you're under a ton of stress - as if her health problems (and yours) weren't enough. How's your nephew taking all that? It must be hard for him too. Sending good vibes your way...

I'm surprised the RV is still there too, especially since the activities around it are shady as best. I'm glad Sean found both a home and a job of sorts with that elderly couple (sad the husband passed though) - like Bijoux above, I was thinking that maybe he could get a recommendation for a real job in the field, but if Dorothy passes away, there will be no one to be able to do that.

    1. Insurance and healthcare is so complicated.

My grandson is doing well with everything. I don't know if he really wants to work in a real job. I know he has a prison background and a felony charge for something so that might make it hard for him to get a job too.

  15. Happy to hear your daughter's got a relatively good prognosis! Hopefully her referral will go through quickly and she'll have no hangups there. Insurance is such a major hassle. Ugh.

Hope you are okay too Mary. Just take it easy please.

  21. I'm glad to hear that Sean has been working out as their health aide. Hopefully they'll leave him a little something when they pass. I hope he has a way of staying on his feet when they're gone.

  23. I am so glad your daughter is getting her meds but good grief about the cardiologist change, that is crazy! I do hope you feel better with your med increase.

  24. Our health care system stinks. It is time we join the rest of the civilized world and have a national insurance plan that everyone takes, sorry for injecting politics, but I have heard to many of these stories. That was nice of your friends to "employ" a homeless guy to help them and also help him.
