Since I have a few new followers I thought I would put the link out to my articles. For those of you that didn't know, I'm a Freelance Writer. I mainly write about small animal care because I love my little furry guys. I've got 4 little rats right now and so I use their pictures in a lot of my articles. So if you're interested take a look at my articles on the Yahoo Contributor Network and let me know if you have any comments or questions.
Update: Yahoo Contributor Network is no longer around.
Oh, I do so love a good read--and on rats? Even better! I thought I was the only one insane enough to tell my boys, "guinea pigs are for girls, lets get rats!" lol
ReplyDeleteYou have rats? We really do have a lot in common..lol
ReplyDeleteHope you like my articles. :)
Ok, I read most of your rat articles and learned a TON! I have a quesetion for you--we have our two rats, Matilda & Doris, in a large cage--metal bars and a plastic bottom. While we keep them well fed/watered, lots of treats, a house to sleep in and a wheel to play on, wooden munchies and even a salt roll, they have begun to eat the plastic bottom of the cage. I mean, chewing holes large enough to get OUT through. My response has been to bring natural, washed rocks inside and place in front of the holes....but now I've got like SIX freakin' holes! WTH?
ReplyDeleteChantel, over the last few years I've learned that you can have a huge cage, wood blocks and all kinds of toys for them to chew on and they will probably ignore everything you put in there and chew on the bars, water bottle, and plastic pan. They decide what they want to chew on and I haven't been able to figure out a way to stop them.
ReplyDeleteI had one rat that chewed her way through 5 water bottles until I rigged it outside the cage so she couldn't get at it and put it in a metal sling. lol She still tried though.
All you can really do is when the plastic pan gets so holey that it no longer works...buy another one and have another one on hand just in case.
I cover my plastic liner bottom with fleece blankets. I wrap the entire liner in the fleece so they can't get at it unless they chew through the blanket and that seems to have stopped them from chewing on that.
Thanks so much Mary, I was worried that they were stressed or something! I'll pick up another liner tomorrow and maybe try the fleece thing! xo
ReplyDeleteYou're very welcome. I hope they stop chewing on the liner. maybe get some bird toys and hang in their cage. That's what I did and they chewed the heck out of them.
