That Cashews grow on fruit that grow on tree's? See those half moon shaped things under the red and green fruit? Yeah, those are cashews.
I did not know this until my brother's Guatemalan neighbor told him about them because they originated in Guatemala but are now grown in other places. The fruits are called Cashew Apples and the outer layer of the cashew is actually not edible and will cause a skin irritation much like poison ivy would. Roasting the cashews destroys the toxins on the outside and makes it easier to break open the outer layer to get to the cashew we know and love.
I knew about the toxins. It's easy to see why they're so expensive to buy.
ReplyDeleteWow I had no earthly clue that there were cashews that grow on fruit?? Let's roast some Mary!!
ReplyDeleteThat I knew indeed, as if they aren't processed right they can give you an itchy ummmm arse crack lol
ReplyDeleteVery interesting. Thank you for sharing. I did not know this withers. We both learned something new.
ReplyDeleteIsn't that neat? I'd heard that but never seen them. I wonder if the fruit bit is edible?
ReplyDeleteI wonder who discovered the secret of making cashews edible. The Mayan Indians, perhaps? Their taste is worth the price, in my view.
ReplyDeleteI did know about this, I used to work years as a produce clerk. A co-worker told me about it, but I didn't believe him until I looked it up. No wonder they're so expensive.
ReplyDeleteNeato--no wonder we pay more for them.
