A while back my friend Anna, from Herding Cats & Burning Soup did a post about things around her house. I liked the idea so much I did my own post a while back. Then one of my blogger buddies Bytes From The 'Burbs, did her own post. I love these posts and you all seemed to like it as well so I thought I would do another one. This time for things I've inherited or been given as gifts.
My paternal grandfather was a rock hound. He went out digging for rocks, for years. He found quite a few really nice ones. This is a fire Opal. It's about 3 inches long. My grandfather found this, cut it into the shape it's in now and polished it up. Then he gave it to my mom when I was a toddler. I inherited it when my mom passed away. It's a beautiful stone.
My paternal grandfather also found this geode. He cut it, polished it and gave it to my dad. A few years ago my dad gave it to me as a gift because he knew how much I liked it.
I don't even know what kind of stone is in this geode but it's so pretty.
I inherited this glass music box from my mom when she passed away 7 years ago. It's one of my favorite knick knacks of hers that I now have.
I inherited this piece of petrified wood from my mom. It's a good size piece but I have no idea where or when she got it. All I know is that she had it for at least 40 years because I remember seeing it on the shelf when I was a little kid.
I asked my dad if his dad gave it to mom but he said he didn't remember.
I love fake plants and terrariums so my daughter bought me this little terrarium for my birthday.
This is what I call a Uniblob. I had to enlarge this picture because this thing is tiny. It fits on the tip of my finger, that's how small it is. I collected unicorns for a long time and Ken bought me this about 20 years ago. It's a tiny glass unicorn on a slice of a geode. It looks like a tiny blob of glass but it's actually in the shape of a unicorn. Therefore Uniblob. lol
It was fun showing you some of the things around my house, I hope you enjoyed it too.
That's a pretty neat geode
ReplyDeleteThanks. I really like it.
DeleteThe rocks are neat indeed. Uniblob must be small indeed.
ReplyDeleteUniblob is very small. lol
DeleteThose are amazing, rock on!
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteOh that's nice. The rocs are beautiful
ReplyDeleteThanks. I love different types of rocks.
DeleteI love the rocks! I have a piece of petrified rock that I bought at the Petrified Forest in Arizona as a kid. Maybe your mom got hers there? Aren't terrariums cool? Do you remember the free ones that came in cereal boxes in the 70's? A little plastic dome with seeds and a sponge. Loved those!
ReplyDeleteI don't remember those in cereal boxes. I remember other toys though. I'm not sure where she got it but it's a nice piece.
DeleteI have a lot of little things like that including rocks from Kevin's grandmother. I need to sort through them all one day.
ReplyDeleteKaren @ For What It's Worth
I would be fun to see them when you do.
DeleteI used to collect rocks, just...they were reeeeeealy boring compared to these
ReplyDeleteWell thank you. lol
DeleteThat opal is so stunning!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I love it.
DeleteGreat collection Mary, I love that fire Opal its gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteThank you. It's definitely a favorite.
DeleteLove the rocks. I have air plants all over my house in cute containers.
ReplyDeleteI love air plants.
DeleteMy exboyfriend over collecting rocks, we traveled around the world together and I started enjoying it as well. I love fire opals :) This geode is beautiful! You have to keep it in the family. Nice piece of petrified wood, I love that you remember it but can’t find out where it came from or how your mom got it. Thank you for letting us into your world
ReplyDeleteI told my daughter she gets the geode and fire opal when I die to pass along to her kid.
DeleteThat opal sure is pretty! You've got some lovely things passed down to you!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much.
DeleteHow fun! I love this segment of things around your house. I find the objects I inherited from older family members quite precious, too. Neat rocks and pretty jewelry case. I wonder if your petrified wood is redwood. I have a terrarium that was a gift, too. Yours is cool in that teardrop glass. Uniblob is cool!
ReplyDeleteI have no idea what kind of wood it is but one day maybe I'll figure it out. It's nice to keep those things in the family and keep passing them along.
DeleteThose are all very beautiful items. This is a neat idea for a blog post. I may do something similar sometime.
ReplyDeleteI hope you do. I love seeing what other people come up with.
DeleteI love the fire opal - So pretty!
ReplyDeleteThe geode is pretty awesome too. :)
Thanks so much.
DeleteLove the opal, geode, and petrified wood. It is amazing what can be found in nature. I am sure that all of the things from your mom have a very special meaning for you.
ReplyDeleteThank you. They really do especially now that she's no longer with us.
DeleteWhat a lovely collection Mary ...
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Thank you.
DeleteUniblob. ::snort:: It's neat seeing where things come from :)
ReplyDeleteI was talking to my dad about the geode the other day. I still laugh that all of my family knows I call it a uniblob.
DeleteNice geode, petrified wood and I love the uniblob too!
