Book Description
Her mysterious past could mean his doom…or his salvation.
Vampires run this city. Hell, they practically run the world. Despite her blurry past, Coraline knows just how dangerous they can be. All her life, she has strived to avoid them. But when her husband is murdered, and she finds herself targeted next, her survival suddenly depends on a devastatingly handsome vampire named Mason.
Assigned to investigate Coraline and her crooked husband, Mason has had to ignore his intense attraction to the little mortal female. When she bears witness to her husband’s brutal murder, and is placed under his protection, it is more imperative than ever to keep his distance, especially when he discovers she is more than just human.
My Review
Coraline had only been married to her husband for a few months but something just wasn't right between them anymore so she goes to him at work to find out if they can work things out, romantically. But she's stopped by the Vampire Enforcement Agency thinking she's another hooker for her husband. It's only after the vampires search her that they realize their mistake.
Vampires are known to humans in this world but most humans are scared of them because of what they can do so Coraline is scared when she comes face to face with the vampires. While Coraline is being searched all hell breaks loose and her husband is killed. The vampires don't know if it's a coincidence that she showed up right before someone comes to kill him but they cuff her and take her back to their headquarters. She believes they'll kill her but she's actually safer with them than without when she finds out now she's also in danger and one of the vampire officers who cuffed her is now going to keep her safe.
But they run into trouble right away, somehow the bad guys keep finding them. It's a good thing Mason is a vampire or he'd be dead already. It gets harder and harder to keep one step ahead of the bag guys who are after them but while they're on the run they start to get closer which is hard for Coraline to imagine since she doesn't trust vampires at all. But Mason shows her that all vampires aren't bad and she starts to believe him.
I loved watching Coraline gets more confident and start to flirt with Mason. Their initial flirting was so much fun to watch because they are both slowly falling for each other even though Coraline is still a little afraid of him.
When Mason and his sire find out that she's not completely human, all hell breaks loose. Trent doesn't trust Coraline at all and scares her almost to her breaking point. Mason does everything he can to explain everything to Trent but it takes a lot of time for him to believe anything, all the while poor Coraline is stuck in the middle.
I was liking this story but it ended on a cliffhanger and I do hate cliffhangers. The story had no ending at all. Everything was left wide open and I really didn't like that at all. It's hard for me to give this a star rating since I don't feel like I got an entire story.
I give this book 2 out of 5 stars.
Disclosure: I was given a free ARC via NetGalley but all thoughts and opinions are my own.
Even though her husband was less than satisfactory that is a very quick turn around.
ReplyDeleteAnd I hate cliff hangers too. On principle I rarely read the next in the series.
I read this out of order and read the next book first. Otherwise I wouldn't have read the net one either.
DeleteNow I read a lot of historical novels, that one is not for me☺ Have a lovely day ☺☺
ReplyDeleteYeah this isn't a historical.
DeleteAh yes cliffy are not fun... sorry it was not more
ReplyDeleteI hate cliffhangers.
DeleteDang, a 2 isn't very good at all and besides that, the dude doesn't even look hungry!
ReplyDeleteLOL He sure doesn't.
DeleteI'm with you, I hate when they end like that. Love the cover. Great review.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteI don't like cliffhangers either.
ReplyDeleteThey aren't fun.
DeleteNooo! Not a cliffie! Grrrr
ReplyDeleteI was so irritated.
DeleteCliffhangers are the worst. I at least like some type of closure with some of the story.
ReplyDeleteI do too.
DeleteWow what a premise it's my kind of read. Thanks Mary
ReplyDeleteIt would have been good without the cliffhanger.
DeleteIt starts out with a pretty bad day for Coraline. Sounds like she is moving on pretty quickly. Sorry about the cliffhanger.
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteNice review
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteNoooo! A non-ending is worse than a cliffhanger. I loathe cliffhangers, but they're usually setting up another book. An open-ended ending just leaves you feeling frustrated and like you wasted your time. I liken it to almost having an orgasm before the other person just stops. ;)

Ha! Not sure which situation would irritate me more. lol
Deletelike you've* wasted
ReplyDeleteI know. lol
DeleteCliffies can be a nuisance.
ReplyDeleteThey sure can.
DeleteA little cliffie, maybe, but a huge full-stop on the story, nope. I get mad. Don't blame you feeling like there was no point in reading it without some sort of ending.
ReplyDeleteI would have liked some closure. It was ridiculous.
DeleteSorry you didn't like this one very much. Cliff hangers often suck!
ReplyDeleteThey sure do.
DeleteCliffhangers are frustrating when you don't know they're coming. Sorry!!

They should have to tell you there's a cliffhanger on the cover.
DeleteNo, I don't like cliff hangers either …
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Me either.
DeleteSounds like an interesting set-up with her husband gettign killed and the vampires protecting her and then her falling for one. I am not a fan of cliffhanger,s but don't mind them too much. It all depends on how it's handled. It is frustrating when you're expecting it to be a full story and then have it end in a cliffhanger.
ReplyDeleteI don't like them at all but I think everyone knows that about me. lol
