A friend of mine sent me an offer to accept 2 free meals from Blue Apron. So I did and was signed up for their weekly meal delivery but could cancel it after my first box if I wanted to. They sent all of the ingredients for 2 dinners in prepacked baggies. Plus they sent two recipe cards that were really easy to follow. All I had to do was chop everything and cook it.
One of the meals I made was roasted purple potatoes, steam buns with pork patties, marinated cucumbers in miren and two sauces, one for the pork patties and one for the potatoes. It was pretty good. And it was easy to make.
The other meal was top sirloin steaks, roasted potatoes and kohlrabi, miso kale and a sauce made with rice vinegar, brown sugar and black bean sauce. This dinner was my favorite.
New things I tried with these two meals:
Sauteed Kale
Kohlrabi
Black Bean Sauce
Steam buns
Miren
Hoisen Sauce
Gochujang
Miso
But I enjoyed trying all of this new stuff. I even used a clove of garlic in the pork patties and I detest garlic. lol I'll be buying some miren and hoisen sauce in the future for sure. Cucumbers marinated in miren and are really good. I'm on the fence with the black bean sauce. I didn't really care for that. But being able to try new things with these easy to cook meals was a lot of fun. The only drawback for me is for these two dinners a week, Blue Apron wants to charge $71 a week and that was a little too much for me. So I cancelled my subscription after I got the first box.
Have you tried any of the meal subscription boxes?
I also tried Green Chef a while back and you can find my review of that here.
So nice of them!
ReplyDeleteI guess if you keep getting this they send you free meals to send to your friends so they can try it and hopefully sign up for the subscription too.
DeleteThey do sound good - but $71 a week is prohibitive.
ReplyDeleteAnd that's only for two dinners.
DeleteHi, Mary!
ReplyDeleteMrs. Shady's daughter subscribes to Blue Apron and raves about their meals. I like the idea of a service that introduces new and exciting foods to my palate, but the cost seems prohibitive. I am fortunate to have a wife who is a sensational cook. Mrs. Shady's father owned a restaurant in Baltimore and taught her all about food preparation and presentation when she was a girl. She loves to experiment in the kitchen, create her own recipes, and makes us fabulous meals.
I hope your week is going well, new friend Mary!
That is awesome. I love cooking and like to try new things too.
DeleteWow! That's expensive. Nice meals but you could spend that at a restaurant and have someone else prepare everything.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the price is what made me cancel it.
DeleteBoth of these look really good! I don't subscribe to any of these boxes. My husband and daughter have food allergies so we have to be careful with what we try around the house. Plus my husband is picky. He would never touch anything that looked different.
ReplyDeleteOh I can understand that. I'm not picky so I love trying new things.
DeleteI'm glad you liked trying new stuff but I couldn't afford that either. Thanks Mary
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome.
DeleteMy daughter and her husband did Blue Apron for a year, but then it got too expensive for them. It would be fun to try new things like that.
ReplyDeleteYeah, the price is a little crazy.
DeleteI love the idea of those boxes but they are way too expensive for me. I'm glad you enjoyed trying new things. :)
ReplyDeleteI feel the same way.
DeleteI didn't even know such things existed, but...as Alex above stated, for that kind of money, one could go to a restaurant LOL. Though of course, the point is to try new things...
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, there are all kinds of subscription meal services but they are expensive.
DeleteYikes at that price, but we always wondered if they were tasty.
ReplyDeleteIt's tasty but the price is a little much.
DeleteThose meals sound good. We recently signed up for Hungryroot and have been happy with it so far. It's a little pricey but you get a lot with it, not just the two meals.
ReplyDeleteOh that's good. Glad you found a good one.
DeleteI started with Home Chef. I've picked the meals up at the store but wanted more of a selection so went with the home delivery. I've been glad for it. I'm tired of coming up with things to make and not having the things I needed. I do it three days a week and it works for me. Also a nice way to make sure not to over eat.
ReplyDeleteThat's good. I'm glad it's working for you.
DeleteThese look so yummy! If it wasn't so expensive, I'd give them a try, but $70 for two dinners is too pricy for me.
ReplyDeleteFor me as well.
DeleteI liked the chance to try new ideas and cuisine without buying a big bottle of that stuff I wouldf never use again. I have tried a couple and liked PLATED but they folded. Also the food sometimes arrived in poor condidtion. I tried a few others and was not really impressed. I didn't like the preprepared meals kind because they were very VERY greasy.
ReplyDeleteIt's easier to go to the store, pick out your own food and make it. Plus it's cheaper.
DeleteId like to try something some day
ReplyDeleteThe two I've tried have had good food.
DeleteI'm glad that you had a good time trying something new mixed with the familiar. I never thought of a food box as a gift idea, but that is great especially from a distance.
ReplyDeleteWhew, yeah, that is too expensive for my food budget, too, but nice that you got to try it free.
It was nice to try out.
DeleteI have never tried any of the meal subscription boxes because, like you said, they are too expensive. 💸
