I tried finding a picture of the Halloween costume I used to wear when I was a kid, this is the closest I could find. *back in the early 70's* And I say THE costume because I only had one! I wore the same costume for years because my parents didn't believe in buying a new costume each year when the old one would fit. This witch costume is the closest to the one that I used to wear that I could find.
I remember when I first got it, it was huge on me and my mom took a belt to tie it up around my waist so I wasn't tripping over my feet. She got a big one so I wouldn't out grow it for a few years and I remember the last time I wore it I was 10 years old and must have worn it for at least 4 years. It had holes in the vinyl poncho and the mask that used to have a rubber band on it was held on with a blue ribbon that my mom tied the mask to my head with. That thing was completely falling apart but I didn't care.. I got to go Trick or Treating and came back with a huge amount of candy. *That my mom and dad raided*
So did you have a favorite Halloween costume when you were a kid?
Your parents sound like mine - though I suspect that if we had celebrated Halloween costumes would have been made not bought.
ReplyDeleteMy mom was not crafty like that. lol
DeleteHey, so long as it kept the candy coming year after year -- sounds like a smart investment.
ReplyDeleteThat's true.
DeleteWhen you found a great costume, you stuck with it.
ReplyDeleteDon't remember many from my childhood, but the last Halloween party I dressed for (over twenty-five years ago) I was an undead soldier.
That sounds like a good one.
DeleteExactly like you, I only ever had one costume and it was a witch with a cape and mask. I probably wore it from age 5 to 11 and then we were told we were too old to trick or treat.😡
ReplyDeleteYep, I got told I was too old around 10 years old too.
DeleteThat was actually smart to buy a big one you'd not outgrow so soon. As for me, I can't remember that far back and there are no pictures to remind me of costumes I wore as a child. As an adult, however, I love to dress in costumes, and I've been every superhero you can imagine, plus a nun, a tossed salad, Pikachu, a Minon, Michonne from Walking Dead, Wednesday Addams (my favorite) and this year I'll be sporting Minnie Mouse.
ReplyDeleteI love that you like to dress up now.
DeleteI only remember four of my childhood costumes -- a clown, Cinderella, a black cat, and a hobo. As an adult, I always dressed as a witch when needed.
ReplyDeleteA witch always wins for me.
Deletemy mom made me a butterfly costume but I had to wear my coat over it because of how cold it was!!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, where I was it wasn't that cold.
DeleteI can't remember any specific costumes, but they all came in a box just like your photo. The mask was claustrophobic, and I would take it off between houses.
ReplyDeleteThose masks got so sweaty!
DeleteFunny, I can't remember any costumes either but I know I always looked forward to finding just the right one.
ReplyDeleteThat's half the fun.
DeleteMy go to was dressing as a rodeo clown! I did the same outfit for several years in a row
ReplyDeleteThat's a good one.
DeleteMy parents would never let us have a store bought costume. We had to make ours every year. Usually from boxes or oaktag.
ReplyDeleteOh dang.
DeleteSounds like some fond memories with that costume!
ReplyDeleteOh yeah, I always got lots of candy.
DeleteI remember getting candy but I had no idea what I wore. Candy was the most important thing anyway. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's true. lol
DeleteMy favorite costume was this gypsy dress I got from my cousins; it had a silky gold blouse and brightly colored scarves sewn on the skirt, and a scarf with bangles to wear on my head, and I got to wear lots of jingly bracelets. I loved it. :D
ReplyDeleteOh that sounds so wonderful. I think I would have liked that too.
DeleteFun look back
ReplyDeleteThanks.
Deletethere were five of us, we were dressed all in black with a white "P" and black makeup smeared around our right eyes.
ReplyDeleteWe were black eyed peas.
That's hilarious.
DeleteI remember those costumes and definitely the masks with those rubber bands. I think I still have trauma from them snapping and nailing me in the back of the head.
ReplyDeletelmao My brother and I did that to each other too.
DeleteWhen I was a kid my mom sewed. Let's see... I was a princess, an angel, the Pink Panther, and the rest have flown out of my head. Yikes. I think one year I was a witch. It was different every year of elementary school. By jr high, I was in charge of coming up with it.
ReplyDeleteThat's awesome.
DeleteMom had a rag bag and we would go through the old worn out clothes and get an outfit together. We would be proud of ourselves. One year, I tried to dress as Lil Abner's wife Louisy. But really, we all dressed as hobos I'm afraid we were so rough with things, nothing would have lasted four years.
ReplyDeleteThat's a really good idea.
DeleteI didn't get new costumes each year, either. I remember wearing Snoopy two or three times. LOL, my dad helped me with the chocolate in my haul, too. :)
ReplyDeletelmao
DeleteBelieve it or not, I don't remember any of my costumes but then again it was a lonnggg time ago. Some were homemade. Ghost sheets made from white bedsheets were popular back then. All I can remember is those terrible masks that were hard to breathe in. I hated that! And my Mom also raided my candy. That's one of many Halloween traditions, I think, because (ahem) I did that with my son, too. Alana ramblinwitham
ReplyDeletelmao I think all parents raid the candy.
DeleteI seem to remember we had a dressing up bag which had quite an eclectic mix of costumes!
ReplyDeleteAll the best Jan
Oh that's very cool.
DeleteHalloween wasn't as big here, but I do remember when it got more popular here that I dressed as a witch one time.
ReplyDeleteThat's my favorite type of costume.
DeleteMy first halloween costume was Tony the Tiger which came from a cereal box (this would have been around 1962.
ReplyDeleteThat is so cool.
DeleteI really don't remember my costumes. I remember my mom made my sister and I ladybug costumes out of felt.
ReplyDeleteThat sounds cute.
