Apartment Life #372

This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that have gone on in and around my apartment complex and in my neighborhood in the past 26 years that I've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 26 years here in a weekly blog post.

Tuesday morning on our first walk of the day I noticed some burnt trash on the ground by the dumpster in our alley. Looked to me like someone put some paper into the white bucket by the fence and set it on fire because the inside of the bucket is charred one side is completely melted. I didn't see the fire dept. come so I think someone else just threw some water on the fire.

I know it's hard to tell the difference in what's wet from the water and what's burnt.

There's a lot of trash on the ground for some reason. And a lot of it was burned. Falcor was interested in all the burnt material. lol

Part of this cardboard box was burned.

Most of the trash up against the fence is burned or charred, you can see all the charred remains from paper on the outside of the fence.

I've been meaning to post this picture for a while but keep forgetting. It's a picture of the community bbq that sits in the pool courtyard. Any resident of this apartment complex can use it. We aren't allowed to have bbq's (Even though a lot of residents do) so they have this for us to use. And lots of residents use it.

A little backstory... About 2 years ago the maintenance guy that used to work here knocked on my door and told me he needed to change the locks because the office didn't have keys to my door. He said he would be back with the lock and never showed back up. So I already knew that the office did not have keys to my apartment
.
On Saturday (yesterday) a different maintenance guy knocked on my door and said he needed to change the locks on the door because the office didn't have keys to my apartment.

I said ok, go ahead. He looked stunned and said, "Oh, right now?"

I said yeah.

He looked puzzled for a moment and then said, "Uh yeah I can do it now. Let me go get my tools and the locks."

So you come to my door wanting to change the locks but don't bring anything to change the locks and seem stunned that I agreed to it? Wtf?

So he came back about 30 minutes later and changed the locks. LOL I swear this place hires idiots.

The high this week was 103F/39C
The low this week was 73F/22C

So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

  1. I guess the homeless people decided they wanted their own BBQ as well -- in a bucket.

LOL I swear this place hires idiots

Yes, but they don't just hire ordinary idiots. From some of the stuff you've described, they probably require an advanced degree in idiocy.

    1. Ha! Yes. The homeless could probably use the grill located in the pool courtyard if they really wanted to. They already dunk themselves in the pool to 'wash off'.

  2. I hope you got keys to the new locks, including a spare set.

    1. Yes I got 2 keys and they kept one.

  3. I don't think I'd want the office to have keys to my apartment with people working for them like that!
And community BBQ grill - sounds disgusting. I'd never be able to sanitize that thing enough to use it.

    1. I don't have a choice about the office having keys. They are allowed to have keys for emergencies.

  4. The rubbish looks a mess there, guess it will get cleaned up by someone.
Good to have a new lock on the door.

  5. That maintenance guy was probably hoping you’d put up a fuss so he could get out of doing his job!

  6. 'Changing locks' is on someone's to-do list. They didn't expect anyone to want it done immediately!

  7. It would be one thing for them to call you or knock on your door with a clipboard and actually ask you for an appointment time. But to say they're there to do it and have no equipment is nutty. What I miss you have to look at with that trash on the ground what a shame. It is nice that they do have a barbecue grill for you to use.

    1. I was surprised he didn't come prepared too. The trash did get cleaned up recently.

  8. Funny how the locksmith was surprised when you actually asked him to change the lock!

  11. Our condo indentures have always said there can't be any type of barbecue grill on site, but some residents were ignoring the rule. Last year they started enforcing it and those people were MAD!

    1. That happened last month during the inspections. The manager came by with maintenance and just threw away all the bbq's that were outside. lol

  12. \Hi. How is it going?

Glad it didn’t turn into something worse. And that lock-change story? Classic apartment nonsense! It’s crazy how unprepared they always seem.

Thanks for sharing these storiesmakes me feel a little better about my own housing headaches.

  14. I'd be suspicious about that maintenance man. Sounds like a fishing expedition with his not being prepared to change the lock but coming back 30 minutes later (time enough to go buy a lock kit if he isn't really maintenance), changed the lock and now has keys to your apt; and what office was he speaking of as I thought you have no office, that everything is handled online.

    1. He is maintenance, I see him working around here when there's a vacant apartment. He did the AC inspections with the manager. The "office" is located in another apartment complex. We have an office but no manager is ever here unless they make an appointment with a resident, which isn't very often. The management company manages all the different apartment complexes the owner owns from a central location located in an office at a different apartment complex.

  15. I don't Grill but those public barbecues always fascinate me for some reason. I'm not sure how to explain why

    1. I've never used it. I have no idea what other put on it and we have to clean it ourselves and others don't after they use it.

  16. Too bad you couldn't say no to the new locks. I wouldn't want those idiots having access. But yeah, why wouldn't they be ready to go when they knocked?

    1. Yeah, Ken used to just change the locks when they would come and put new locks on our doors. lol

  17. Glad the trash fire didn't spread! I have no idea why he'd ask to change your locks and then not have the equipment with him to do it. Maybe he thought you'd say no? Ridiculous.

    1. Probably but he knows I can't say no. They have a legal right to have a key to all the apartments in case of emergency.

  18. the lock story is pretty good! How strange to say it needs done and then they don't bring the stuff to do it.

  19. An unofficial BBQ gone wrong? At least it finally got cleaned up. The key: A friend of mine would call the lock incident "apartment stupid". It sure took them long enough to realize (after the first time how long ago?) they didn't have a key for your lock. Makes me wonder what prompted them to realize it now. And I hope the idiot gave the office copy key to the office because otherwise they'll be knocking on your door again....gotta love it. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
