Apartment Life #405

This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that have gone on in and around my apartment complex and in my neighborhood in the past 27 years that I've lived here, and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 27 years here in a weekly blog post.

A lot has been happening around my apartment complex this week. Last week we had an inspection with the fire marshal to make sure that the smoke detectors were all working. When he found out that the last owner had the apartment manager put fire extinguishers under the sink, he went and looked at mine and didn't like it being under there and talked to the manager about it while she was in my unit. The maintenance was supposed to check and replace all the smoke detectors, but they didn't and it's been rescheduled for Monday. That's what the notice above says.

It also says they will be removing all the fire extinguishers from the apartments because the Fire Marshal told them to. She came over to me last week when she saw me outside and told me that the Fire Marshall thinks we're all idiots and if we have Fire Extinguishers in our apartments that we will try to use them and put out the fire ourselves instead of getting out and calling 911. So now they all have to be removed, but what she doesn't know is that I have 2 fire extinguishers of my own that are hidden and they aren't taking those. The fun never ends.

This is the tiny fire extinguisher they are worried about. Say goodbye.
----

Maintenance has been really busy making upgrades to both my complex and the complex right next to mine. I found out that the new owner bought not only this complex but that one too. Maintenance has been installing these lights along the top of all the buildings. I guess the street lights aren't bright enough for them at night. They are spaced about 20 feet apart along the top of the buildings.

The lights haven't been put in them yet. I'll try and get a picture of how bright they are when they are installed.

I'm going to have a light near either side of my window, so I might have to invest in better blackout drapes for my window depending on how bright they are.
---

After last week when I told you maintenance was removing 2 of the trees and placing plastic sheeting under the rocks this is what it looked like before they put in new rocks and the plastic.

This is what it looks like now with the plastic under the rocks and the new rocks placed on top of the plastic. It doesn't look bad, just very plain.
---

Then one day I finally got a picture of this dog. The owners live just around the corner but they let this dog out offleash all the time. I see him around here all the time. He never gets close to me but he says hi to Falcor.

He would run close to Falcor and then run away and come back. He's a fast little guy. I worry he's going to get hit by a car one of these days though.

Then he came over to say hi to Falcor who was happy to say hello to him.

The high this week was 63F/17C
The low this week was 38F/3C

So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

  1. Your “Apartment Life #405” post is both entertaining and relatable there’s something about the mix of everyday frustrations, quirky neighbors, and little surprises that keeps readers hooked. The fire extinguisher saga is especially amusing; it’s almost like a secret rebellion tucked under the sink, and your humor about it makes it a joy to read.

  2. It would be terribly sad if that little dog does get hit by a car. And if I were the driver I would be so upset by what happened I'd probably never get over it. You're right about the gravel, it looks nice and clean but very plain. My husband is a retired firefighter and he would tell you to please keep a fire extinguisher close at hand.

    1. It really would. It is plain and simple. It's so ridiculous that they want to take away the fire extinguishers. We do have a couple attached to the wall outside too.

  3. Hello,
It is not safe to let dogs run loose in the streets.
I hope the cute dog stays safe. Have a great day and happy week ahead.

    1. I know. But they do it all the time anyway.

  4. The new lights are probably to discourage vandalism and other crime. Hopefully they aren't so bright they also disturb you.

I thought letting a dog run loose with no leash was illegal in most cases. If it bites somebody it could end up being picked up and euthanized. Hopefully it has enough sense to avoid cars as you say.

    1. Probably, but I doubt they will discourage anything. It is illegal. But there are a lot of offleash dogs around here and nothing is ever done about them.

  5. I’m glad the dog was friendly. The no fire extinguisher rule makes zero sense. I’ve always read that fire depts recommend fire extinguishers for kitchen fires. How is it even legal for them to take them from you?

    1. It really doesn't make sense at all.

  6. The fire extinguisher decision sounds batty to me.

  7. Remove the fire extinguishers... Yes, God forbid you guys actually need them and use them.
    Courtyard does look better.

    1. There are 2 fire extinguisher's outside attached to the wall so at least there's that.

  10. I find it incredibly odd that the fire department wants the extinguishers removed.

  11. I hope the new owners are good to those who live there!

  12. Very sensible of you keeping some hidden fire extinguishers in case you need one in a hurry.

    1. You just never know when they are going to be needed.

  13. The plastic sheeting and rocks look good now, and they probably did it to reduce weeds in the area. That might work short term, but they'll eventually pop up.

    1. I figure they will pop up at some point this Summer.

  14. The courtyard looks "very plain" indeed. Management did the same thing here ... cut down trees, replaced grass with rocks, but we do still have areas that hold dirt and plants to break up the plainness. At least for now. And LOL, you're smart to hide those other fire extinguishers.

    1. It's plain but we'll see what else they do. I want to keep the ones I have just in case.

  15. Questioning the fire marshal. Did you read my post on my smoke detector. Seriously, I wanted to rip it out of the ceiling. LOL I also have a fire extinguisher and bought some fire blankets. Hey just in case. The new owner seems to be making some good changes. Have a nice day today.

    1. No, I'll take a look. Hopefully they don't raise the rent too much with all these improvements.

  16. They're taking away your fire extinguishers? That's dumb. I'm glad you have others they don't know about.

    1. Yeah, he thinks we're all too dumb to use them I guess.

  17. That is really stupid to remove fire extinguishers! Falcor's little pal is cute!

  18. Falcor's wee pal is a cutie :-D It does look quite plain with just the stones now. Maybe they could add some plant pots or something? Madness about the fire extinguishers though, seriously?

  20. I am a bit amazed at the fire Marshall wanting the extinguisher out of there. I hope that little dog stays safe; the streets just aren't safe with so many inattentive drivers. Having lights shining in your window is no fun but it may be good that the new management is seeming to try to make improvements. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
