This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that have gone on in and around my apartment complex and in my neighborhood in the past 27 years that I've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 27 years here in a weekly blog post.
Instead of Uber, I've been seeing this new car service called, Vay. You download the app, order a car and it comes to you driverless and then you can drive it yourself wherever you need to go.
I looked at their website and the price is above. Kinda crazy.

I heard the police helicopter up and got a picture of it.
Then looked outside and there were 2 cop cars parked in front of my building. They went into the building next to mine but I have no idea for what.

I noticed that someone (probably a homeless person) set fire to a box spring part of a bed. Good thing it didn't catch anything else on fire.
The fire stayed right here thankfully. This was close to my building though and I'm getting pretty tired of them setting fire to things around my apartment complex.

Some other homeless person goes to all the effort to find a mattress and drag it clear into the complex. And then another homeless person decides to go to sleep on it probably with a lit cigarette maybe!

DeleteAfter watching several YouTube videos about homeless people in Western countries, I found myself wondering about something. Many of the homeless individuals shown were wearing good-quality sneakers, jackets, fashionable clothes, and even carrying smartphones. I am not judging or profiling anyone I do not know; this is simply an observation that made me curious. In Indonesia, homelessness often looks very different. Many homeless people appear to be wearing worn-out or dirty clothes and seem to have far fewer possessions. I wonder whether this difference reflects variations in social support, charitable assistance, housing costs, or other cultural and economic factors.
ReplyDeleteThey steal clothes, shoes, food, whatever they need, they steal it from stores. People who are low income can get free smartphones here. They also get money by selling the stolen goods to people in the neighbor for a much less price than you would pay in the stores.
DeleteThe driving cost doesn't surprise me. Bet a lot of people speed in those vehicles to get there faster.
ReplyDeleteAs to Asep's comment - in places like California, the homeless are given freebies which is why they are walking around with cell phones. Why work when the government gives you stuff?

ReplyDeleteYes, it's remotely driven. It's a new kind of service. The driverless cars are very strange to me also.
DeleteI too am wary of the driverless cars ~ they’ve had a lot of accidents. Re the other comments: most of the homeless people I see wear layers of dirty old clothes…

DeleteYour helicopter pic reminds me that we saw a hang glider way up in the sky last evening on our walk. I guess it’s not a glider but powered, but it looked like that. Way up there. Seems chancy to me but also kind of exhilerating.

DeleteI heard it was super hot in your area, but that is crazy. And I haven't heard of Vay. These driverless cars kind of scare me. And I don't get why someone sets fire to anything other than maybe a campfire to cook s'mores on or else a fire in the winter to stay warm. But you don't need warm with those temperatures.

DeleteRenting a car by the minute sounds costly but, based on some things I've read about male drivers harming female passengers, it's probably worth the cost and safer for lone females.

DeleteNever heard of Vay. I wonder how safe it is. Being able to keep a car while you spent, say twenty minutes shopping might be useful. I don't think you can do that with Uber.

The driverless cars are weird. But I think they're here to stay.

DeleteAnother fire. Why? Do the homeless use these as cooking fuel (not sure for heating in the summer) or to cook drugs needing cooking?. Just wondering. First I have heard of that car service. So I see they are headquartered in Germany and they are starting out in the U.S. in Las Vegas. The cars are electric and are "remotely driven" to where you pick them up . Then you drive them like a regular car so they aren't driverlesss. Then, when you are done they take the car from you, driven remotely again. If it works right I can see where it would be less expensive than Uber. It will be interesting to see if they succeed. The one issue I would have is that these are electric cars. Fire is the last thing you need at those ungodly temps. We have the same temps here as well, does not even go below30 at night. Hell on Earth.

I’m glad the box spring fire didn’t spread--those temperatures are brutal enough without extra danger.
I think it's because I'm like a person doing a documentary, I'm just filming or taking pictures of stuff going on around me. Most of it never has anything to do with me personally.
DeleteSounds interesting the driverless car as a taxi so to speak. Your weather is hot over 40 deg C, a bit like many areas in the northern area of Australia in summer. Why people have to light fires is beyond me, and it is good it didn't come your way or any other way for that matter.
