So this is the time of year that bugs other than bee's and wasps come out. I usually find a few spiders or beetles but this was a first for me. I saw this little thing crawling across the floor the other day and against my carpet it actually looked white but it's more a light grey. So I put my glasses on and looked at it because I had no idea what the heck it was and saw it had 14 legs. So I Googled insects with 14 legs and looked through the pictures. This, ladies and gentlemen is a Sowbug.
According to what I found online about it, it's not a bug at all but a land crustacean that feeds on dead plants. These look like rolly polly's but these cannot roll themselves into a ball. They like dark, damp places to hide and are often found under logs and flower pots. But this is the first time I've seen one.
I also found out that if they come inside and can't find moisture or a damp place they usually die if they can't get back outside. So after taking his picture, I took him back outside. They don't bite or sting so I just picked him up and put him near the base of the tree outside.
I never know what insect I'll find around here next. lol
I never knew what they were but have seen a bunch.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was kinda weird looking. lol
DeleteThat is one ugly buggy!
ReplyDeleteIt was weird that it was so light colored.
DeleteI've never seen this, but had I seen it, I probably would have panicked.(lol) Kudos to you for your kindness. Hugs...RO
ReplyDeletelol I thought it was some kind of millipede.
Deleteblergh
ReplyDeletelol
DeleteCute little fella. About this time every year we have a stink bug invasion. I think they are so cute though. My family thinks I'm crazy for liking bug-like creatures lol
ReplyDeleteI don't mind most bugs. Bee's on the other hand....nope.
DeleteOmg, I was gonna say rolly polly, but you say they can't roll themselves into a ball? Crazy! - www.domesticgeekgirl.com
ReplyDeleteI thought it was a rolly polly at first too.
DeleteThanks for being nice to the bug! I'd forgotten how "buggy" the south can be.
ReplyDeleteIt's very 'buggy' here.
Deletedon't like them
ReplyDeletelol He was interesting.
DeleteLooks freaky but good to know it is harmless. Wouldn't exist here... we are way too dry.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised to find out about them. It's dry here too.
DeleteHe's neat! I would have just thought he was a roly-poly and left it at that. Glad you could rescue him.
ReplyDeleteJust when I think I've seen all the bugs around here, I find a new one. I think it must have to do with what sort of environment we've got for a season. If it's drier or wetter during the summer brings out different bugs.
That's true. I know there are a whole slew of bugs I haven't seen and maybe don't want to. lol
DeleteOMG White… 14 legs… I’m not afraid of bugs but I’m super curious to know what this is. I’ve never heard of a Sowbug. Wow it’s a land crustacean! Now that’s interesting. I’m so happy you didn’t kill it, I try not to kill insects, they have feelings too.
ReplyDeleteMost times I just put them back outside.
DeleteI thought it was a pill bug at first too. I have never head of this kind of a bug before.
ReplyDeleteIt was a first for me as well.
DeleteI've never seen these before o_o I hope I never do again haha
ReplyDeleteLOL You're so funny.
DeleteAwe! (NOTE: That's the only time you'll read me saying awe in relation to a bug) LOL.
ReplyDeleteLOL You're too funny.
DeleteI usually take bugs outside as well. I am not sure if I have seen one like that before or not.
ReplyDeleteIt was strange.
DeleteThat crustacean looks a lot like a bug. Poor thing. :-p
ReplyDeleteLOL Yes, it does.
DeleteWe get seasonal invasions here too. We had baby frogs during the hurricanes. As long as they can't hurt my pets we just move them back outside too.
ReplyDeleteKaren @ For What It's Worth
Frogs? Well now we haven't had that. lol
