Review: Midnight Burning by Karissa Laurel
Book Description
Solina Mundy lives a quiet life, running the family bakery in the foothills of North Carolina. But a nightmare of a vicious wolf devouring her twin brother changes everything. When she learns her dream was real, she journeys to her brother's home in Alaska, the Land of the Midnight Sun, to search for answers.
Solina soon suspects her brother’s friends are more than they seem, and they know more than they’re willing to admit. Skyla, an ex-marine, is the only one willing to help. As Skyla and Solina delve into the secrets surrounding her brother’s death, Solina learns her own fate is tied to his friends, his murder, and a dark history of forgotten myths and legends.
Solina also discovers a powerful new ability. She must learn to control it if she’s to keep everyone safe. If she fails, a long-lost dominion will rise, and everything she knows will fall into darkness.
My Review
Solina goes to Alaska after her brother is killed in what can only be described as a crazy animal accident. Once there she looks deeper into his death even though most of his friends tell her to leave it alone.
This book started out a little slow for me but it quickly picked up speed. Between Solina's weird dreams of her brothers death and the way his friends acted once she got to Alaska, I knew that this was going to turn into a good mystery but I wasn't prepared for the creepiness that flowed from the pages. This story creeped me out. It's like that feeling you get while watching a Horror movie late at night when you're all alone and then become too afraid to go to the bathroom by yourself. Ya know what I mean?
Val and Thorin are two characters that made me laugh more than once in this book. Val was a buddy of Solina's brother, he worked with him and seemed to have a big crush on Solina. Thorin was her brother's boss but he was snarky, secretive and I knew right away that he liked Solina. Even though there are hints of a romance, the romance never got off the ground in this book.
When Skyla decides to help Solina get to the bottom of what's really going on, they end up endangering themselves and Val and Thorin come to their rescue a few times. When we finally get an explanation about what's really going on and who the players are, it ends up making me even more interested. I was totally immersed in this story and the interesting paranormal element that pops up. This book does end on a cliffhanger though and you all already know how I feel about those. This was free on Amazon when I picked it up so I'm glad about that because this was entertaining even if it did end on a cliffhanger.
I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.

Sigh on the cliffhanger front. I wonder how often they work and people do buy the next in the series. Mostly it means I will put the book down and step away.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'm not a fan of cliffhangers.
DeleteFree and entertaining works...even if crummy cliffhanger
ReplyDeleteThe storyline is actually good.
DeleteOh yes, I do like when a book can give me the shivers like that. :) Too bad about the cliffhanger, but at least it was free to read the first part and maybe the second half will be free someday. :)
ReplyDeleteThe author saw my review and offered the rest of the series to me. So I will be reading the rest of it.
DeleteDang, only a three but the book cover is interesting!
ReplyDeleteThe cover is awesome.
DeleteOh, I do hate cliffhangers, especially if the next book isn't released yet! Hope you get the next book soon.
ReplyDeleteThe author is actually going to send me the next book.
DeleteYeah, I don't enjoy cliffhangers either. :(
ReplyDeleteThe cover is pretty cool! I love the burning slash. It catches the eye!
The cover is awesome.
DeleteCliffhanger endings are only okay if you have the next book sitting on your nightstand ready to be read immediately. :)
ReplyDeleteThat's exactly how I feel.
DeleteSorry to hear that this book was a slow start but glad it picked up. Those creepy vibes can really work on you. Shame about the cliffhanger, those are the worst especially if its unexpected
ReplyDeleteGreat review.
Thank you. I'm hoping to read the rest of the series soon.
DeleteI never bother much about cliffhangers. For me if I enjoyed the book, I'd always want to get the next in the series, regardless of how it ended. If I didn't like the book greatly, no form of cliffhanger persuades me to read on!
ReplyDeleteMore often than not a cliffhanger will make me drop the author from my reading list.
DeleteNice review
ReplyDeleteThanks.
DeleteI've never heard of this author.
ReplyDeleteI read one of her other books and liked it so I gave this one a try.
DeleteCliffhangers are so evil
ReplyDeleteI know.
DeleteThe dreaded cliffhangar.
ReplyDeleteYeah. I will be reading the next book though.
DeleteThis sounds really good...and then you mentioned the cliffhanger. Of course, if the next book is available I can deal with that.
