Shaggy Mane Mushrooms

Have you ever heard of the Shaggy Mane Mushroom? If not, you're not alone because neither had I. My daughter has one of those apps on her phone where she can take a picture of a plant and it will tell her what it is. Apparently this is a Shaggy Mane Mushroom. I was wondering what it was after I noticed a few of them popping up in my courtyard after all the rain we'd gotten.

According to what I've read they are also known as Shaggy Ink Cap, or Shaggy Mane and is a common fungus often seen growing on lawns, along gravel roads and waste areas. They have cylinder bodies, covered in scales which is where they get their shaggy name from. The mushroom will turn black just hours after being picked and melt into a black liquid. So if you want to eat it, you have to cook it right after you pick it.

We didn't pick them or eat them but I thought it was an interesting find. Has anyone else seen these growing in their lawn?

  5. If I saw something like that growing in my yard, I'd think alien seed pod and run for the hills.

  12. Haven't ever eaten one, but considering the filth that gets peed out and crapped out and dropped outside where you live, I don't think eating these ones would be a good idea, either.

  15. I have a plant identification app as well and they warn to verify mushrooms before eating. I'm nervous about eating any mushroom I see growing because I don't know enough about identification and it could be really dangerous if I mis-identify.

These are very unusual mushrooms you have growing. I've never seen them!

  17. I love mushrooms, but only after they've been cleaned and prepared. Did you pick one to watch it turn to goo?

    1. No I didn't, I didn't want the goo getting everywhere. lol

  19. Okay this is pretty cool! I cannot believe someone would eat them because they look... unappetizing at best heh. But I LOVE that they melt into black liquid, like that is the stuff of horror stories right there! Very cool find!

    1. They are a neat find especially when everything else around here is so desert like.
