Apartment Life #413
This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that have gone on in and around my apartment complex and in my neighborhood in the past 27 years that I've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 27 years here in a weekly blog post.
I guess I'm the star of this week's post.
So, here's what happened this week to me and my daughter. So for about a week my daughter was feeling bad she was having a lot of pain, coughing etc. We both had a cold and I got over mine in about a month, she didn't. She has lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, so we thought that it was a lupus flare up. We finally talked her into going to the ER because she started vomiting, had a fever and the body aches and muscle cramps were really bad. She went last Sunday, turns out she had pneumonia in both lungs, and she was septic, so she's spent a week in the hospital trying to get better.
Sunday night I was here by myself, I went to bed and I got woke up at 1:00 in the morning because one of my smoke alarms on the ceiling on the outside of my door, in the hallway was going off. Now usually when I wake up, I take medicine at night that makes me sleepy, so I stop I make sure I'm okay and I slowly get up and slowly making my way out the bedroom door, but I was panicked because I was here by myself and smoke alarm was going off.
So, I thought there might be a fire in my living room, and I didn't take the time to slowly get up and slowly make my way out of my bedroom. So, when I got to the front of my bed I tripped and I fell, I ended up hitting my head on the edge of my jewelry armoire and I gave myself a concussion. And I fell forward on my hands and knees, and I hurt both of my shoulders and my knees. The pain in my shoulders was so bad I thought I broke both of them.
I keep my phone out in the living room on the charger so I did not have it on me or with me anywhere near me and I could not get myself up off the floor. So, I knew while the adrenaline was running high, I had to crawl out of my bedroom and get to my landline phone that was right outside my door in the cradle so that I could call 911 because I could not get up off the floor.
So, I felt the door just in case there was a fire in my living room to see if it was hot. It wasn't. I opened the door, there was no smoke, fire or anything. The smoke detector was going off for no reason.
I got over to the phone, crawling on my hands and knees which was excruciatingly painful because my knees were bruised and my shoulders were incredibly sore. But I got to the phone and I called 911 but because the smoke detector was going off, and I was now sitting right underneath it and Falcor was sitting on the couch howling because of the noise from the smoke detector, and I could not move any further. I could barely hear what the 911 operator was saying to me but I did tell her that my front door was locked, I could not get up to unlock it but my bedroom window was not locked and there was an air conditioner in it, if somebody was small enough they could crawl through the small opening between the air conditioner and the window and get in.
When the paramedics and the fire department got here they opened up the bedroom window and a very thin paramedic crawled through the window, over my dresser and opened the door so that the other firemen and paramedics could come in.
All in all there was about 12 men who came into my apartment that night. So I told them what happened, the fire department took the smoke detector down, reset it and then proceeded to put it back up on the wall and they thought that was the end of it. It wasn't. The smoke detector started going off again. So the fireman took it down again and another guy took a hand held device around my apartment to make sure there was no fire in the attic or roof making it go off. There was nothing. So he disabled the smoke detector and told me to call maintenance to get a replacement smoke detector. He wrote something on the faulty smoke detector so they couldn't just reinstall the faulty one. Maintenance came out Thursday and replaced the faulty smoke detector.
They took my vitals, my blood pressure was through the roof it was 212 over 100 they wanted me to go to the ER just for my blood pressure not even counting how much my shoulders were hurting and my knees, plus the possible concussion. But I have agoraphobia and I could not leave so I asked them if they could just get a tarp that they had used the last time I broke my shoulder 12 years ago, let me scoot on to it and then they could just pick me up and put me on the couch so that I could get up from the couch and I could show them that I can get around from there and I didn't need to go to the ER. So they finally agreed to do that, this is the tarp they used, and exactly where I was sitting when they came in and picked me up off the floor. I'm sure it has another name but that's what I called it.
Falcor had to get on the tarp while I took the picture.
I told the paramedics that I would call my housecall doctor the next day and they would send out an X-Ray technician to X-Ray my shoulders, which they did. They called me on Wednesday to tell me that nothing was broken thankfully, so it shouldn't take more than a couple of weeks for me to start feeling better.
This is my knee on Friday.
So as of right now I cannot lift my arms very much but it's better than a week ago. The headache from the concussion is finally gone but the side of my head still hurts when I chew, and I still have a good size knot on the side of my head. My knees are bruised but I'm okay I'm trying to get better.
My daughter is still in the hospital with pneumonia but the sepsis has cleared up. The X-rays they took on Friday showed her pneumonia is worse than it was when she first went in and she's been on IV antibiotics for a week. So they are trying other antibiotics. They are keeping her in the hospital for a few more days at least. That's all the news I have for this week.
If there had been a fire in my apartment...both Falcor and myself would have perished in it because there was no way for me to get myself up off the floor. I really have to be more careful. I'll be keeping one of my phones in the bedroom with me from now on at night.
The high this week was 97F/36C
The low this week was 69F/20C
So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

That's quite the eventful week you had! I'm so sorry. I hope the next round of antibiotics works for your daughter, and that your bumps and bruises heal quickly. And no more falls! Wishing you all the best, and keeping you in my prayers.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I will try not to fall anymore for a while. I need to wrap myself in bubble wrap. lol
DeleteThat's a lot! You described it all so vividly I could imagine it happening to myself (though thankfully I do not have agoraphobia). Smart to keep your phone in your bedroom for any future misadventures! Hope your aches clear up ASAP
ReplyDeleteThank you. Lesson learned, keep the phone close.
DeleteOh Mary such a horrible chain of events for you and your daughter. So glad you will be okay. All the best for your daughter's recovery also.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteI'm so sorry you had the fall. Sounds like you will heal up okay, but that's awful. I hope your daughter continues to get better and is back home soon. Sending hugs .
ReplyDeleteThank you, I hope so too.
DeleteThat was tough tough tough. Glad the prognosis wasn’t too bad in the end, or not as bad as it could have been. All the best to your daughter too.
ReplyDeleteYes, it could have been so much worse.
DeleteOMFG girl. I was just getting ready to write you and email and thought I should come here first. I'm so very sorry about your daughter. Smoke detectors, seriously, they need to be updates. Mine went off at 4 AM a month ago and there was no smoke or fire. However, I didn't fall. I can't even imagine what was going through your mind waiting for the FD and PM. I'm sending healing energy to your entire household. Just get better.
ReplyDeleteThis smoke detector had just been changed out for a new one 3 months ago. it was new. The anxiety that night was through the roof.
DeleteOMG Mary!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That was a LOT of Crisis going on all at once GF!!!!!!!!!! I Hope your Daughter responds well to her Treatments so she can come back Home and help you out while you Heal there at Home. The Man just got released Today, he too had the Pneumonia, probably brought on by the Heart Surgery coz they had to put him under to do it. Let's Hope that everyone Heals well and we move thru all these Medical Crisis and catch a break, your Family and ours.
ReplyDeleteToo much happened this week. My daughter is starting to feel better thankfully. I'm glad the man gets to go home.
DeleteYou poor thing Mary. I'm so sorry that you tripped and had to go through that drama but, thank goodness you are ok. Your poor leg, bruising does take awhile to come out then go away.
ReplyDeleteTake care.
I should heal sooner than if I broke something.
DeleteA hell of a nasty experience. Good idea to start keeping the phone close to you. If it's in a different room and a real fire started between you and wherever it is, even if you're perfectly able-bodied, you could be trapped with no way to call for help.
ReplyDeleteYes, I've been thinking about that too.
DeleteI am so sorry to hear that happened to you. That must've been so scary to not be able to get off the floor and not knowing whether there was a fire or not. I am glad there was no fire, but what a scare that must've been. And that bruised knee looks pretty bad. I hope you continue to recover well and I am glad you didn't break anything. I hope your daughter will recover too and feels betters soon.
ReplyDeleteIt was so scary. My daughter is starting to feel a little better.
DeleteHello Mary, I am so sorry to hear about you and your daughter, I hope you both recover quickly and feel better soon. It is good to have a phone nearby, sounds like a scary time. Take care, I hope all is better soon.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteI knew you said you'd hurt yourself but I never imagined to such a degree. And that you were at home alone because your daughter is in the hospital. And that she is dangerously ill. I certainly pray that the antibiotics work for her quickly after all this time now. And aren't you going to be sore for a very long time. Bruises like that just don't go away quickly. You have my thoughts and prayers with you.
ReplyDeleteI never thought I would hurt myself like this either. I hope she can get better and come home soon.
DeleteWow! Yes, keep the phone with you. Very sorry you hurt yourself so bad. Where was your grandson during all of this? Wish your daughter had gone to the ER sooner. My mother died of pneumonia so I know it's not something you take lightly. Hope she comes home soon.
ReplyDeleteMy grandson was at his dad's house.
DeleteWhat with your daughter's hospital stay and your terrible fall, your stress levels must be through the roof! Hope writing about it all here has helped to lessen the stress. Also hope that both you are your daughter are healing. Sending you wishes for much better health. xx
ReplyDeleteMy anxiety is through the roof right now.
DeleteOMG, Mary! I’m so sorry for all you and your daughter are going through. Is your grandson staying with his dad? He must be so worried about his mom and you! I’m shocked that the paramedics didn’t insist on the ER if they thought you had a concussion. That’s so scary. I’m going to pray for you for healing and that your daughter gets better quickly. XO
ReplyDeleteYeah my grandson is at his dad's house. They can't insist you got to the ER if you are conscious and alert.
DeleteSuch terrible business, Mary, fecking retrograde Mercury and his aftermath! Especially with what happened to your daughter as well. Good news is that you had 12 men in your bedroom at night! That could be a legend to be told to the new generations LOL
ReplyDeleteI can imagine the pain, you probably remember that a few years ago I fell from my sleepery marble staircase at night and landed on my knee. I had a massive hematoma and bump on it for almost a year LOL
If I hadn't been in my pajamas with those 12 men and I could stand on my own, it might have been better. lol
DeleteDamn, a year?
Mary, you poor soul. Thank goodness you were rescued and all was well, with no fire. Now you must concentrate on recovering. I hope your daughter is soon well enough to come home again. You both have been in the wars.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately my daughter was just diagnosed with congestive heart failure. Things just keep getting worse.
DeleteOMG Mary. You really had me worried reading this. I am so glad you and Falcor are okay. Keep your phone with you at all times now.
ReplyDeleteI really hope your daughter gets better soon. It sounds like she is on the mend.
I know what you mean about being more careful. After my ankle break I am very cautious now. Sending you lots of love and hugs xx
I'm glad me and Falcor are ok too.
DeleteMary Mary Mary, what a frightening series of events! To think that a smoke detector that cried "wolf" was responsible for your fall and the resulting painful injuries is like the plot of a horror movie. I hope by this time the apartment handyman got to the bottom of the mystery and installed a new and reliable detector. I wish you well as you recover from your injuries. All this was preceded by your daughter's medical crisis. I hope the attending doctors and nurses can administer antibiotics that clear up her pneumonia. It saddens me to learn how poorly 2026 has been treating you and your family. Sending love and best wishes to you and your daughter, dear friend Mary!
ReplyDeleteI'm just trying to stay positive right now. My daughter keeps getting more bad news. She was just diagnosed with congestive heart failure. It has to get better, it just has to.
DeleteThere were so many stressful things going on all at once. Wow! I hope you are resting and healing.
ReplyDeleteI'm sure trying.
DeleteThis is wild! The worse thing is, you couldn't be there for your daughter and she couldn't be there for you. (I'm sure she'll be quick to go to the ER next time she's sick! I hope the new antibiotics will do the trick soon).
ReplyDelete"He wrote something on the faulty smoke detector so they couldn't just reinstall the faulty one."
Smart guy - I wouldn't put it pass your maintenance people to recycle the faulty smoke detector...
"I told the paramedics that I would call my housecall doctor the next day and they would send out an X-Ray technician to X-Ray my shoulders, which they did."
I've never heard of such a thing in Italy - not sure if it can be done at all, though maybe it's possible if you're a very ill person who can't be moved.
As I told you in your other post, you were lucky not to get a cerebral hemorrhage at the very least, like my dad did by hitting his head on the edge of an armchair (which should be less sturdy than an armoire, I think, and at least it's movable). Of course, since he takes anticoagulants, it's easier for him to draw blood - but still. Also a lucky thing that the paramedics could access your apartment through that small gap.
I hope you're on your way to recovery, but don't feel pressured to blog-hop or anything. We get it.
There are quite a few doctors that will come and see you here now. They come to me to draw blood and any other tests I need done. I only need to go to the ER is I need surgery or have something like an MRI or other test that they can't do here at home.
DeleteIm so sorry that you had to experience that, and the concussion. I hope you are better. I too, have this smoke alarm that would continuously go off and I'd have to get on a table on top of a chair (cuz i'm so short) that put two smoke detectors in my building since we have a highrise of more than 200 people)
ReplyDeleteMy head stopped hurting on Thursday. At least no more headache right now. That's crazy.
DeleteDear Mary, bless your heart! I am so sorry this happened to you, dear friend! What an ordeal!
ReplyDeleteI wish you a full and rapid recovery.
Thank you.
DeleteI saw your updates on Facebook for both you and your daughter. I have been sending healing thoughts. We keep our phones by our bedside, and I am glad to hear you will do that as well. We added little night lights to our wall outlets as I have tripped more than once on the edge of the bed myself going to the bathroom at night. The lights are outlet covers and very minimal, shining low to the ground so they don't distract from sleep. I bought them on Amazon and simply replaced the old outlet covers. Installs was simple, just removing the screw from old cover and screwing the new one back in. Get better!
ReplyDeleteThank you. I just keep thinking it can't get worse and then it does. I have lights on in my room too but I just rushed when I shouldn't have.
DeleteOh you poor dear! So glad you survived, but more glad you daughter's sepsis has cleared up. I nearly died of that!
ReplyDeleteThank you, it's definitely nothing to mess with. I'm glad you recovered too.
DeleteHoly Moly, talk about the week from Hell, both for you and your daughter! You were very resourceful to disregard the pain and call 911. I hope your injuries clear up soon and don't have any lasting effects. And best wishes to your daughter in hospital too -- what a terrible situation for her.
ReplyDeleteIt's a wonder what you can do when you really have no choice. I knew I had to get to the phone one way or another. Thank you. I hope she gets some good news from all of these new doctors she's going to be seeing soon.
DeleteOh my goodness Mary!!!
ReplyDeleteI do hope your injuries clear up soon and healing wishes for your daughter too.
My very good wishes to you both are coming across the miles from the UK.
All the best Jan
How scary for you! When I go to bed I plug my phone in to charge and set it on my bedside table.
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, Mary. I am sending all the positive energy your way. I'm glad you are recovering and that the EMTs and Firefighters were accommodating to you. And your daughter - that is really scary. I hope she gets better soon. Is your grandson with you?
ReplyDeleteSuch an ordeal you and Falcor went though. I sure hope your leg heals up really soon. Prayers for your daughter too.
