Everyone Has A Story, Here's One Of Mine

I've been thinking of writing an autobiography or memoir but it just never comes together for me but I figured if I write one story at a time and post it on my blog maybe once a month, I can do that. Maybe one day I'll pull all the stories together and put them in a book but for now I'll just share some stories with you about my childhood. Some of the stories will be happy, some sad and some horrific because that was my childhood. But they will all be real, things that actually happened. If it seems like something that people enjoy reading maybe I'll keep it going. These stories will not be in any kind of order, I'll just write them as they come to me.

Trigger Warning: The following story contains a true story of gun violence and suicide. If this is something that will bother you, please do not read this.

Larry's Suicide and How I Thought He was Going To Kill Me

If you didn't read last month's story you should go back and read that so you get a picture of Larry's personality and how we didn't get a long because he hit my mom and disliked me.

After moving back in with my grandpa from the ending of the last story, things were going alright for a while. Larry didn't like me but he seemed to love my little brother so I just ignored him as much as possible which was hard when he hit my mom. Even my grandpa said something to Larry about him hitting my mom but it never stopped and he didn't care who he did it in front of. My grandpa couldn't do anything because he wasn't a big man and he was older and had slowed down quite a bit. We would find out months later that he actually had lung cancer that he spread everywhere and that's why he was slowing down so much.

One day at the end of August after everyone was leaving my grandpa's welding shop, I got into a heated argument with Larry about him hitting my mom. He, my mom and brother got in my mom's van and left. I went home with my grandpa in his work truck. My mom and Larry got home before we did and when I got out of my grandpa's truck, I got the door keys from him and ran upstairs. He followed behind me because he had a real hard time getting up the stairs at that time. My mom and brother were in the driveway in her van. So I walked past them and went upstairs.

The first thing I noticed when I opened the door was that the TV and radio were on and turned to their full volume which was weird. Larry was sitting at the kitchen table and he had my mom's gun in his hand. There was a bottle of Peppermint Schnapps on the table in front of him and he was drinking. He pointed the gun at me and I thought he was going to kill me. All he said was, "This is all your fault." He downed the rest of the Schnapps, put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger. I was 13 years old.

There was so much blood, everywhere, coming from every orifice he had in his head. It pooled on the floor under him so fast and all I could do was stand there in shock until my grandpa grabbed me by the shoulders and pushed me outside and locked the door. I just stood there for a minute not fully understanding what had just happened. I remember running down the stairs and going to the van in the driveway and telling my mom that Larry had hurt himself. She ran up the stairs and started banging on the door but my grandpa wouldn't open the door. When she started screaming he opened the living room window and yelled at me to get my mom away from the door. I went back upstairs and tried to get my mom to go downstairs but instead she pushed me and I fell halfway down the stairs. She didn't care that I got hurt so I just walked out to the front and stood there. The police got there first and forced my mom to come downstairs. She and my brother held each other but my mom pushed me away when I went to her. She wanted nothing to do with me. So I stood by the fence and just watched things happen.

My grandma and aunt Cecilia pulled up and my grandma went over to my grandpa and they talked for a moment and then they took me to the side of the house and told me I shouldn't tell anyone what I saw. That if anyone asks I should say I didn't see anything and that my grandpa went in first and never let me go inside the house. They never asked me what I saw, if Larry said anything to me or how I was. And they never talked about it with me again. I know my grandpa heard the shot because he was on the stairs when it happened and the door was open. So when the police took my grandpa, mom, me and my brother down to the police station to fingerprint my mom and question all of us, I just said I didn't see anything and my grandpa went in and I never did. The police officer asked me if I was cold because I couldn't stop shaking and I just said yes. I think I was actually in shock. I kept it all to myself and didn't tell anyone for the next 4 years when I told my psychiatrist. My mom was absolutely shocked to find out what really happened. I was diagnosed with PTSD and a personality disorder called Schizotypal Personality Disorder when I was 17. The PTSD was a direct result of what happened but my psychiatrist wasn't sure if the personality disorder was or not. I could have already had it when that happened. I found out years later that Larry had lost his wallet with around $2000 dollars and that's the real reason he was upset. It had nothing to do with me.

I hope that if anyone has gone through something similar that this will help them. You are not alone. Feel free to email me if you need someone to talk to. I know how hard going through something like this is. miztik_rose@yahoo.com

Book Review: Taken By The Tiger King by Kenzie Skye

Book Description

Raoul is the king of the tigers. He's looking for his mate. Unfortunately, she's not one of the tigresses in his streak, so he takes to the city streets on a hunt for her.

And when he finds her, nothing is going to stop him from taking her…

My Review

Raoul has been looking for his mate but she isn't in his streak so he goes looking for her. She turns out to be a human which doesn't sit well with some of his people. Not that he cares. When he bumps into Mya he knows right away that she his mate and brings her back to his place where he keeps her locked in a room until he has more time to get to know her.

I didn't care for this story and read about half of it before I realized that I just couldn't read anymore because of how Mya was being treated. I didn't like it and I just wasn't feeling this story so I didn't finish it. I wanted to like it but a book has to keep me engaged and interested for me to keep reading and this one didn't do that. Others might like this one but it wasn't for me.

This was a DNF (Did Not Finish) for me.

Apartment Life #369

This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that go on in and around my apartment complex in the past 25 years that we've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 25 years here in a weekly blog post.

Here's a short video of what happened on Monday. This apartment has been vacant for 2 months after the people that lived there were evicted. This homeless guy that we call Trash Can Mike, took a pair of pliers and was able to get the security screen open. Then he tried to break into the inner door. We called the police and waited but they never showed up, which really doesn't surprise me. I'm not sure he got into the apartment but I'm sure he'll keep trying until he does. On Thursday I saw the maintenance guy and told him he should secure the door better. He went and locked it again but that was all.

On Thursday the drug addicts/homeless people set up camp right across the street from my bedroom window. So I set up my tablet in the window and got a couple of videos. This women who is sitting down will pull the blanket over her head when she starts hitting the meth/crack pipe like no one knows what she's doing. A lot of them do this to conceal what they're doing but we all know what's going on. There were a bunch of the drug addicts across the street that day.

By the end of the day most of the drug addicts had left but this woman started screaming at another woman who likes to walk up and down the side walk yelling for no reason. That's my dog barking because he heard them yelling.

I guess it's a week of videos this week.

I know you can't see it too well because of the car and the car that they have most of their stuff behind but there are actually 6 people over there as well as 2 grocery carts full of stuff. There were a lot of other drug addicts from around the neighborhood that came over there to sit and do drugs that day. Some of them didn't even try to hide what they were doing.

The high this week was 99F/37C
The low this week was 67F/19C

So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

Freebie Friday!

Welcome to another weekly Freebie Friday post, where I tell you what free samples and full sized products I received in the mail and how you can get them too. Someone asked me why I do a "Freebie Friday" each week, so I'll tell you.

A while back I listed all the free samples and wins that I had received that previous year and so many people didn't believe that I could have gotten so many free things. So I decided to prove it by taking a picture every week and sharing the sites that I found the links to the freebies at. So now you too can get great free samples coming to your mailbox each week.

You can find links to great samples at Hey It's Free and Freebie Shark.

I was sent...

A Salonpas flex patch for muscle pain.
Creed Perfume sample. Spring Flower.
The Good Patch wearable wellness patch.

I've used the Salonpas pain patches before. They help a little when you have minor muscle pain. The Creed perfume smells like flowers which is fine with me. It smells good.

The wellness patch did nothing for me. I got the Be Calm patch which is supposed to help with stress. I didn't feel any less stressed out.

Did you receive any freebies this week?

Low Carb Meal: Chicken Lettuce Wraps

You will need:

2 Romaine Lettuce Leaves
Cooked chicken breast- sliced
1/2 Avocado- sliced
1/2 Tomato- diced
2 radishes- sliced
1 piece of bacon- crumbled
Sriracha Mayo to drizzle on wrap

What To Do:
Cook the bacon and chicken breast the way you like, set aside. Cut all of your vegetables, slice the chicken and cut the bacon.

Layer the ingredients into the lettuce leaf the way you want, top with a small drizzle of the Sriracha Mayo.

2 lettuce Wraps = about 10 grams of carbs because of the tomato and avocado.

I wanted to share with you the Sriracha Mayo that my daughter bought. I don't like a lot of spicy stuff but this is really good. I've been putting it on all kinds of foods. Just a little bit goes a long way.

Would you eat this?

18 Years Blogging! Happy Blogaversary To Me!

It's my blogaversary!

It's hard to believe that 18 years ago I started this blog. I had no idea what to write about at first, sometimes I still don't. I'm just glad that my readers seem to still enjoy reading my posts.

A lot of things have changed in the last 18 years. My daughter is all grown up and now I have an 10 year old grandson. I used to have hamsters, rats and gerbils and now have a very energetic Jack Russell Terrier/Chihuahua named Falcor who turned 9 years old this month.

My blog has changed as I've changed over the years. I've met a lot of really wonderful people and made quite a few friends along the way.  I've ranted, reviewed, shared my thoughts and advice. I don't think I ever really thought that I would still be blogging 18 years later or that anyone would read what I had to say, but many of you do and I thank you for sticking with me through so many years.

So for all of you followers that have been here a long time and for those of you that are fairly new I just want to say thank you for visiting, commenting and enjoying what I've been posting over the years. I hope we'll all be around and blogging for many years to come.

Book Review: Taken By The Dragon King by Amelia Shaw

Book Description

Stavrok won’t let anything stand between him and his mate.
There’s a beast inside of me, and there will be a time when I can’t control him. That’s what my father told me happens when my dragon finds his mate. He will claim them. He will not be gentle. He will not be sweet. My dragon will do whatever it takes to ensure his mate doesn’t leave, no matter the cost.

Lucy thinks soulmates are only for her dreams.
When a stranger breaks into my home and comes after me, I recognize his face. He’s the man from my dreams—the one I’m destined to fall in love with. But I don’t believe in soulmates. That’s why I try to flee.

Stavrok takes Lucy to the snowy mountains, hellbent on proving she’s his mate.
But then his kingdom is attacked, and Lucy is stolen away from the Dragon King. Now her only hope lies in knowing Stavrok will turn the world to ash and brimstone looking for her...and his dragon babies.

My Review

Lucy has been having dreams of a man she doesn't know, so when he comes into her home, kidnaps her and she spends the night with him...she thinks it's all a dream. When she wakes up the next morning and finds herself in a strange bed and the man from her dreams is there, she's not sure what to think except that she needs to get home. When Stavrok tells her that she's his soulmate and wants her to stay there with him, she just wants to get a way. So he makes a deal with her, stay for a few days and if after that time if she still wants to leave, he'll take her home. He's just hoping that in that time he can convince her that they are soulmates and she'll stay with him because he's not sure he can ever let her go.

Stavrok is a dragon shifter from a different realm where he is the King. He never wanted to be like his ancestors where they had stolen their mates and brought them back but when he finds Lucy, his dragon takes over and doesn't give him a choice. Now he understands how they felt and why they kidnapped their mates. But he is going to give Lucy a choice if he can and make a deal with her so she can get to know him and his people.

They are making great strides to get to know each other and she even knows that she's falling for him but when she is kidnapped by a neighboring King to barter her in exchange for some land, Stavrok is enraged beyond belief and he goes after the King to save his mate.

Oh this was a good one. I wasn't sure if I was going to like the whole kidnap aspect of this book but it ended up being a great story and I liked how nice Stavrok was to Lucy and how be became the alpha dragon king once she was stolen from him. If I had a dragon shifter who was a King, telling me I was his soulmate who looked like the guy on the cover, I'd probably stay too.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Apartment Life #368

This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that go on in and around my apartment complex in the past 25 years that we've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 25 years here in a weekly blog post.

I have good news about my neighbor from last week. She was having sciatica pain in her back and that's why she went to the hospital. She said she called her daughter to come help her because she couldn't even get off the couch and the daughter told her to go to the ER. They gave her some muscle relaxers and after a few days she was fine. I've had nerve pain, it's painful. But at least she's ok now.

----

Wednesday afternoon I heard a dog yelping in my courtyard and looked out to see my neighbors dog (Chop) being taken away by Animal Control.

I talked to my neighbor who had been outside while that was going on and she said Chop did not like the wife because she beats on him all the time, So when Chop growled at her she called Animal Control to come pick the dog up. The dog only growled at her, didn't hurt the child, didn't scratch anybody, didn't try to bite anybody, it just growled at her because it didn't like her because she hits the dog. I never saw her hit the dog but my neighbor said she saw her do it. I guess my neighbor yelled at the wife when Animal Control was here and the woman shut the door in her face face.

Update: The very next day the husband went down to the shelter and got his dog back. Not sure that was a good idea since it's obvious the wife doesn't like the dog.

----

I don't know if you can see it very well but there is a fist sized hold in each pane of glass. One in the upper right hand side and one right where the while board is. This is drug dealers bedroom window and one week after the broken window was fixed, I spotted two fist sized holes in the window again.

I don't know if you can see the holes any better in this picture.

Right next door to drug dealer lives a very quiet guy who has a homeless drug addict brother who goes to drug dealer's apartment all the time. The homeless brother busted out his brothers living room window when he wouldn't give him $20 for drugs. That's what the brother who lives there told me. He covered his window with trash bags until it could be fixed. This is not the first time the homeless brother has done this.

---

On Friday afternoon, Swat, police and this ambulance was on my street. I went outside to get better pictures but I was yelled at to go back inside. So all I got was this ambulance and the black car (undercover cop car) that is parked beside it. The black car had it's lights flashing which is why I knew it was a cop car even before the police got out of the car. I heard a flash bang grenade go off while I was going back to my apartment. The police broke someone's bedroom window and threw the flash bang inside. It was just 2 buildings down in my apartment complex. I have no idea what was going on.

The high this week was 95F/35C
The low this week was 66F/18C

So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

Low Carb Recipe: Spring Rolls

So after getting the Spring Roll Wrappers last week, you just know I had to try making a few different things with them. I've never had Spring Rolls nor have I ever made them, so this was interesting. The first lunch I made was a crab and cilantro spring roll. My rolling technique left something to be desired but they were good. I served mine with a side of guacamole for dipping.

Ingredients:

1/2 cup of crab
1TBSP mayonnaise
1 tsp. Sriracha Mayo
2 TBSP diced Cilantro
Squeeze of lemon

All I did was submerge the spring roll wrapper into a bowl of cold water for a couple of seconds and then added a little of the crab mixture to the wrapper and rolled it up. It was simple but good.
---

The second day I made another Spring Roll for lunch, it had chicken breast, cilantro, sliced radishes, mushrooms, avocado and tomato. I dipped this in a Sriracha Mayo that my daughter bought. It's spicy but good.

I don't know if there's certain things that usually go into a spring roll but I just put into what I liked and it was good.

Net Carbs for two Spring Rolls =26
2 Spring Roll Wrappers- 14 Grams of carbs
1 Medium Tomato- 5 Grams Carbs.
1/2 Avocado - 7 Grams carbs

Do you like Spring Rolls?

Book Discussion: Alien Romance

You might have noticed that I've been reading a lot of alien romances this year. I know some of my blogger friends also like alien romance books so I thought it would be interesting to list a few reasons why I/we (if you'd like to play along) like alien romance.

Alien Planets/World Building
Just look at the picture above that I selected for this discussion. You're not going to see anything like that on Earth but you might on an alien planet. Sometimes the author will describe something so alien (see what I did there?) that it takes a wild imagination to picture it in your head. Good thing I have a wild imagination, eh? You never know what you might find on an alien planet. Live volcanoes? Sentient rocks? Plant people? An atmosphere that isn't breathable for humans? Animals that can communicate with you? Several moons that are super close or other planets that you can take an alien space ship to in a matter of minutes? You never know what you might find on an alien planet. And that's the fun part because an author can add whatever elements they want, it doesn't have to be believable.

The Aliens Themselves
With the description of some of these tall, sexy aliens...I'm almost hoping that aliens visit us in my lifetime. As long as it's the friendly aliens and not the evil aliens that I've seen described. Some of the evil ones are described as spider-like, or balls of mud that smell like year old trash. Yeah, I'll pass on those. But some 7 foot tall, muscle bound, blue guy with long black, sentient hair and horns. Or a tail that you might need an XXX rated mind to realize the reason we ladies (or men) might be very intrigued by. *Eyebrow/waggle* And the fact that he will do anything for his mate once he finds the one. *Sigh* Yes please.

New Languages and Technology
More often than not the aliens have their own languages and we humans have to be implanted with a universal translator in order to understand them. But if the human in question if found by their mate out in the alien wilderness because they escaped the evil aliens and are on the run and just happen to run across a friendly alien who is their mate...they might not have the universal translator tech with them so they have to find a way to communicate with each other until the alien can get them safely back to their village and be implanted with one.

While the alien might have a universal translator implanted to they can understand everything the human is saying and hilarity ensues because of it. I love those funny moments in scenarios like that. But having the heroine in danger and the alien save her and be her hero even if she can't understand him, is one of my favorite scenarios. It's such an adventure for them and if they have to fight through some evil aliens or alien wild animals/plants in order to get to safety, all the better.

So if you read alien romance, why do you like it?

Book Review: Submitted by Leann Ryans

Book Description

Ka'vin was a rare omega male. Held in a pleasure house for twelve years, would anyone want him when he was finally rescued?

Scarlett had committed her life to her career, but when the thing she never thought she could have is thrust into her life, can she accept it's okay to take what she wants?

This is set in the world of the Omega Market series but features an alpha female with an omega male instead of the usual MF.

My Review

After spotting that beautiful cover, I really wanted to read this one and I'm glad I did. Ka'vin has lived many years in a pleasure house being treated badly and used like no one should be. When he's finally rescued he thinks things will be different but in this world him being a rare Omega male just means that he's going to be sold off at the Omega Market to an Alpha female if one will even have him after where he's been.

Scarlett is out with her friends but she doesn't realize they planned to bring her to the Omega Market so she can bid on an Omega Male. Scarlett is an Alpha female which isn't as common as an Alpha male and she's not sure that she wants the commitment of an Omega male since she works and travels a lot for work.

Ka'vin is hoping that he finds a permanent home with an Alpha female who will treat him better than he's been treated in the past but he's not holding out hope for that. He is in a cage with the other Omega's so the Alpha's can come take a look at what they might be bidding on later. He feels a pull to her and she feels something for him as well but she's not sure that she's going to bid on him, so her friends buy him for her as a present.

I really liked the female Alpha dynamic instead of the male being the Alpha. Scarlett isn't sure she's what Ka'vin needs or that she'll be enough to keep him happy but he really wants Scarlett to claim him as hers. This was a short, sweet novella and I was happy to see Ka'vin find happiness after being a slave in the pleasure house for such a long time.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Apartment Life #367

This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that go on in and around my apartment complex in the past 25 years that we've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 25 years here in a weekly blog post.

There were several police in the Cal Ranch parking lot right behind the alley for my apartment building on Tuesday evening. You can't see the police cars very well but you can see the lights from their cars.

You can see the lights from the police car plus you can see how when I saw Cal Ranch and Marianas Mexican Market is right next door I mean they are right next door, just on the other side of the alley to my apartment complex. Hey, at least there's the backdrop of mountains you can see. lol

I enlarged the last picture so you can see the police cars a little better. I'm not sure what happened but I'm thinking Cal Ranch was robbed since there were at least 5 police cars out there and the police helicopter was flying over head.

You remember those flags that were installed last week? Well someone already broke one over the weekend. They came out and fixed it the next day but it's just a matter of time before something else happens to them.

I saw the ambulance had shown up and went to my elderly neighbors apartment. She had been complaining about her back hurting the day before, even came and got an ice pack from me. She hasn't been home for the past few days so I think she went to the hospital. Hopefully she isn't hurt too bad.

My brother was here on Friday and he and my daughter saw the police searching this truck when they were outside. I don't know if the police found anything.

The high this week was 98F/36C
The low this week was 72F/22C

So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

You can find links to great samples at Hey It's Free and Freebie Shark.

This week I received:

A sample of Zyfe hand soap.
Philosophy Dose of Wisdom skin serum
Nantucket Footprint laundry detergent sheets
Several perfume samples

Again the perfume samples smelled really nice. Most are ones that I have received in the past. The Zyfe soap smelled like roses which I loved. I reviewed the laundry sheets a couple of days ago and really liked them.

Did you receive any freebies this week?

Low Carb Recipe: Spring Roll Bites

I heard that you could fry Spring Roll Wrappers so I decided to try this.

What you'll need:

You will need 1 spring roll wrapper - cut into bite size pieces.
1/2 cup Oil for frying
1TBSP butter
1/2 bell pepper- diced
1/4 cup fresh corn
3 mushrooms- sliced

What To Do:

Melt butter in a small pan, all vegetables and sauté for 7 minutes. Set aside.
Cut your spring roll wrapper into small bite size pieces. *Do Not Wet With Water First* You want the dry spring roll wrappers right out of the package. About the size of a cracker. They are easy to cut with scissors.

Next, heat oil in a small pan. Get oil hot before adding in spring roll wrappers. Cut a small piece of the spring roll wrapper as a test piece and add it to the oil. If it immediately puffs up, the oil is hot enough. If it doesn't the oil is not hot enough.

When your oil is hot enough, add one piece of wrapper to the oil at a time because they will immediately puff up and you have to remove them immediately. Then add the next piece until you have as many as you want. Top with your sautéed vegetables.

My first try I made the pieces too big but I cut them in half on my second try. You want them to be just small enough to pop the whole thing in your mouth because the wrappers are very fragile and will just fall apart if you try to bite it in half. But they have such a great crunch and are only 14 grams of carbs for 2 spring roll wrappers. Which would make quite a few little bite size snacks. I only used one spring roll wrapper and it made several one bite portions. You can substitute any vegetables you like for this.

Would you try this?
