Does Your Mouth Itch After Eating Fruit?

If your mouth or lips itch or tingle after eating certain fruits, you should read this article that explains why. I've known for a long time that it was a slight allergic reaction because I asked my doctor about it a few years ago and he told me. I have that reaction to avocado's, banana's and melon's. I've been tested and I'm allergic to Ragweed so the chart on that article I had you read is right.

Most people will just avoid those foods that make their mouths itch but I like fruit too much to let a little itch for a few minutes stop me from eating a banana or having a slice of cantaloupe. I also have another food allergy that is a bit more problematic. I wrote about it in this blog post a few years ago. I'm allergic to raw shrimp. I can't peel them without wearing latex gloves because I'll break out in blisters if I touch raw shrimp. But once it's cooked, I'm fine.

So does your mouth itch when you eat certain fruits? Have you ever asked your doctor about this? Did you know it was a slight allergic reaction?

  1. interesting! have not noticed any reaction to fruits but i have noticed a slight numbness or tingling after eating nuts - but only once in a while, not every time. i eat them a lot so am not too worried about a more serious reaction.

  2. I eat fruit and it burns my back, so screw fruit. Fish makes my mouth itch and throat close up. Never even knew about such allergies that way though.

  3. I can't remember ever having and itchy mouth after eating fruit. The only thing I am allergic to that I know is peniceline, once got it as a kid and got very sick from it.
And that's weird you're only allergic to raw shrimp, but not when it's cooked.

  5. Good to know! So far I don't have that trouble. Sensitivities and allergies can change as we get older so I'll hope that I still get to eat my fruit since I love it.

  6. I've never had that happen, but when I cut up kiwi, it feels like it burns or stings my skin (the juice) but I'm fine eating it. Weird, huh?

  7. Very interesting. I've been blessed and do not have any food allergies, but as I age I've noticed seasonal issues.

  8. I fall in between your two examples. Fruit isn't my friend even though I like it. I don't itch with it but if I eat more than 2-3 bites my mouth becomes irritated and my tastebuds feel raw. Kind of like when you wash your hands too much and they get red and irritated? That kind of feeling where it just hurts. It sucks. Since I'm a vegetarian and limited on foods lready because of that it takes it down even more. I still have some but not often.
