Review: Dead Ice by Laurell K Hamilton
Book Blurb
Anita Blake has the highest kill count of any vampire executioner in the country. She’s a U.S. Marshal who can raise zombies with the best of them. But ever since she and master vampire Jean-Claude went public with their engagement, all she is to anyone and everyone is Jean-Claude’s fiancĂ©e.
It’s wreaking havoc with her reputation as a hard ass—to some extent. Luckily, in professional circles, she’s still the go-to expert for zombie issues. And right now, the FBI is having one hell of a zombie issue.
Someone is producing zombie porn. Anita has seen her share of freaky undead fetishes, so this shouldn’t bother her. But the women being victimized aren’t just mindless, rotting corpses. Their souls are trapped behind their eyes, signaling voodoo of the blackest kind.
It’s the sort of case that can leave a mark on a person. And Anita’s own soul may not survive unscathed . . .
My Review
I've been a fan of this series for years and this book is no exception. Anita Blake is called upon to find out who is raising zombies to make some weirdo zombie porn. Only thing is, when she and her fellow officers watch the porn video they can see something is very wrong. The zombie in the video looks scared. Zombies aren't supposed to be scared unless they somehow have their soul back...which just couldn't be...could it?
The thought that some voodoo practitioner could take out and put back someone's soul so that the zombie body rots a little in between and the zombie knows what is going on but is helpless to do anything about it...yeah, that's some awful shit right there.
In the middle of all the zombie kinkiness going on, Anita is trying to figure out who is going to be in her commitment ceremony because she doesn't want anyone to feel left out or for there to be any problems because someone was left out. She and Jean Claude are trying to figure out their wedding and what kind of rings to make that she can wear everyday.
I used to really feel for Asher but his character is just going down the tubes in this one. He's making decisions that make no sense and it seems like he's doing things to try and make Jean Claude jealous and Anita mad but all he did was make himself seem like he might not be around much longer if he doesn't stop doing things to alienate everyone. His character just doesn't seem to fit into their group anymore and that's sad because I used to kinda like him, but not much anymore.
People who have been a fan of this series since the beginning will like this book as well, I know I did.
I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Always good when a series continues on a high note
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my favorite series.
DeleteWow, this too some imagination to write!
ReplyDeleteThis series is awesome.
DeleteI liked this book too, and was baffled by some of the terrible reviews it received. I love the Anita Blake series, and will keep reading it no matter what the reviews say, but it seemed to me that this one was really ripped apart for some reason. The only real criticism I had for it was that she just kind of dropped the whole side plot with Rafael being poisoned. I wanted to know where that was going. But oh well, maybe in the next book. :-)
ReplyDeleteThis series has a lot of haters. I don't really understand why but it does. Each new book gets loads of bad reviews and I don't understand if they don't like this series anymore because of all the sex...why do they continue to read it?
DeleteAs for Rafael, after reading this paragraph, I thought the healer was dead.
"But before he let Doc Lillian give him the painkiller, he talked to Micah, Benito, and me. He set in motion that the healer who had done this would be taken, questioned, and eventually killed. That last part wasn’t stated, but it was a given. You try to assassinate the king, you die; period. Regicide is just one of those crimes that has to carry maximum punishment to discourage anyone else. "
So I just figured that either the healer is dead or we'll find out what happened in the next book.
Yeah, but there was also supposed to be a meeting, but Rafael wasn't healing fast enough. It's nitpicky, but I would have liked an overt statement, the meeting took place or the meeting didn't take place but was rescheduled or put off indefinitely. Something. But like I said, the story was still good and I'll keep reading the new stories as she releases them. :-)
DeleteFirst of all, that's disgusting. Zombie porn? Oh! The smell! The decaying body parts! Ugh!
ReplyDeleteI read though that this felt like a "comeback" of sorts. I might give this a try. I've read the first three books in the series years ago, but stopped because it seemed it was deteriorating. I don't want to get invested in something I will eventually dislike. I might read this one installment though
Yeah zombie porn was a bit much. Sick sick people. I've really liked this series. Some people don't like all the gratuitous sex though.
DeleteI thought this book was getting back to some of the feeling of earlier books.
ReplyDeleteYeah that's what I'm hearing from others too.
DeleteGlad it was a good one for you and sorry about one of your favorites fizzling out as a character. Zombies are definitely not my thing so I probably will be skipping these. ;)
ReplyDeleteI don't blame you. I don't like zombies all that much but since there's so many other things going on, I really liked it.
DeleteThis is another series I want to read. I am curious about what direction the author is taking Asher.
ReplyDeleteYou should definitely read this series. It's one of my favorites.
DeleteAs Lanie from Lanie's Book Thoughts will tell you, I'm no fan of zombies, but the thought of taking it to the porn level, sounds even more creepy! (lol) Hugs...Ro
ReplyDeleteLOL It was a bit creepy.
