This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that go on in and around my apartment complex in the past 24 years that we've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 24 years here in a weekly blog post.
My daughter was outside and this tiny kitten ran up to her, let her pick him up and when she did she could tell he needed help. He was tiny and all skin and bones. She brought him inside and gave him some wet food and water. We wanted to keep him but we're both allergic to cats. My eyes started swelling and getting red right away. So we called Animal Control to come get him. Falcor wanted to play with him so bad but the cat kept hissing at him. So we kept them separated until Animal Control got here which was only about 20 minutes.
The Animal Control lady said that because he's so young and friendly that he might be adopted pretty easily. But if not they will neuter him, clip his ear and drop him back in our neighborhood. I hate that they do that to cats here. A lot of time the cats end up hungry, sick or hit by cars. It makes no sense to me. So we'll keep an eye out for him to see if he's back in the neighborhood anytime soon. If he is, I'll start buying cat food and putting it out for him. There's 2 ladies across the street that feed the street cats that live over there.
I saw my neighbor had parked their truck in front of my window this week. These two elderly people will sit in their truck every single morning until around noon. Doesn't matter if it's hot, cold or in between. They've been doing it for years. They love to gossip and everyone in the neighborhood will go over and talk to them. If I want to know about something that happened on my street all I have to do is wait a couple of days and then go talk to them. Sometimes they'll know what happened.
The high this week was 110F/43C
The low this week was 76F/24C

There's need for such ladies who like gossip and know practically about anything happening on the street.Sometimes, even a neighbor when asked, knows nothing about his neighbor. Lately, two people I used to see around, disappeared (moved, hospitalized or died). Haven't been able to find out about them.

ReplyDelete110 degrees is sizzling hot, dear friend! I'm so sorry you and others are put to an endurance test every summer there in Vegas. That goes for the stray kitten your daughter found. It's a good thing Animal Control responded quickly and came right over so that you didn't need to put up with red, puffy eyes for days on end. Like you, I do not agree with the Trap-Neuter-Return policy for handling feral or stray cats, for the reasons you noted. However, like the many homeless people in your community, there are apparently no other options for dealing with them.
Those old people parked in front of your apartment remind me of food trucks operators who make the rounds of job sites. In this case, they park at various locations around the neighborhood and dispense gossip all day. :)

Young and friendly, he does stand a good chance of being adopted. Obviously he's used to people, which means some jerk dumped him there. Hopefully he doesn't return.

ReplyDeleteWe have a lake here but it's so barren with no tree's or shade and it's still hot there. It's no even beachy so I hate it.
DeleteThey drop cats back into the neighborhoods if they don't get adopted? That's crazy! Here's hoping your found cat gets adopted soon and not thrown back out onto the streets.

DeleteThanks for saving the cat. Funny how animals know who to approach. I hope they get adopted. I have a cat colony in my front pasture and and suspect in the woods behind my home.

DeleteI hope the cat gets adopted and I find their policy disturbing. Why drop it off in the neighborhood, it might not survive. The animal rescue place must be full so that could be why they do that. Stay cool!
ReplyDeleteThe animal shelter is very full. They always are. So they either have to TNR (Trap, neuter and release) or they are euthanized.
DeleteAw you can tell it's practically skin and bones. I can't believe they just release them if they don't get adopted. That just seems like perpetuating the cycle. Although maybe they'd just euthanize them otherwise.

They do get euthanized if they don't do this. But they are neutered/spayed before they release them so the cycle doesn't go on.

I hope the kitty will be adopted. I didn't know they released cats again- but I guess at least they are stopping the cycle of more cats in the long run (spaying/neutering them). That is too funny about those neighbors in the car. I can see a book or show being written about them!

DeleteJust dropping the cats back in the neighbourhood is crazy. As you say, they're likely to end up starving or sick or dead.

I never liked the trap, neuter and release programs. They just aren't a good idea but so many cities do it.

I'm impressed Animal Control was so prompt. If the cat returns to the neighborhood, he'll remember and probably return to your place. I love that idea of a drive up gossip car, LOL.

DeleteI hope the kitty finds a good home. There are always strays around my office building and kind people who feed them despite company policy that we aren't supposed to. We can always tell when a new litter is born by all the little kittens that appear. They are really hard to catch, although some have tried--at least to get them neutered.
ReplyDeleteOur neighbor who liked to gossip passed away of COVID the year before last. I don't think anyone's stepped into his shoes since.
