Favorite Picture of the Week

Earlier this month my daughter made ceviche. My daughter had it on tostada shells, I had mine on the side with other seafood because I try to eat low carb. (More on that tomorrow)  It was really good. Here's the recipe if you want it. Note: It's not made with raw fish because I won't eat that. But the taste is really good regardless.

Ingredients
1lb. Cooked Shrimp- diced
1lb. Imitation Crab Meat- diced
1/2 cup diced Cilantro
1/2 diced White Onion
1 diced Cucumber
2 diced Tomatoes
Lemon Juice from 2 Lemons
Tostada Shells
Salt and Pepper to taste

Preparation
Mixed all ingredients together and let sit in a container with a lid for at least an hour before serving.

Book Review: Eight Simple Rules For Dating A Dragon by Kerrelyn Sparks

Book Description

TRUTH—OR DARE?

Gwennore is an Elf able to track down the cause of a certain illness and heal it—a valuable asset to her people. But when she is thrust into the realm of the dragons, she discovers a haunted place of power, passion, and magic—one that is plagued by an ancient curse. When she meets the smoldering General Silas Dravenko, Gwen knows she’s entered a whole new world of trouble. She’s been raised never to trust a dragon. So why does making a deal with the devil feel so good?

Silas has no way of saving the royal family he’s served for years. But when a beautiful, innocent elf comes bursting into his world, Silas is awakened to desire in a way he’s never felt before. But how can he trust a sworn enemy. . .and how can he live without her, in Eight Simple Rules for Dating a Dragon by New York Times bestselling author Kerrelyn Sparks.

My Review

Gwennore is outside with her niece, a dragon scoops the child up and tries to fly away but Gwennore is able to grab the dragon and is hoisted as well. But the dragon drops her and another dragon catches her but she's not sure why they want the child. When she is able to hear the conversation between the two dragons, that they are having telepathically and she is able to speak to the dragon holding her, Puff, as she names the dragon tells her that he will keep her safe and she will be able to remain with the child once they get to their destination.

Puff, is bewildered that Gwennore who is an Elf is able to speak to him telepathically since that isn't supposed to happen with anyone but other dragons. But he does keep her safe after they arrive at the castle. But Gwennore finds herself in the middle of a mystery when she finds out the King has been kidnapping children to replace the ones his wife, the queen had lost and she quite crazy not knowing exactly what's going on.

So while they try to find out what is causing the Queen to go mad, the King to believe in things that can't be true and the royals to become sick because of some ancient curse, Gwennore has to keep the child safe and work with Silas to find a cure for the curse. Once the child is safely home, Gwennore agrees to stay and help Silas find a cure for the curse. She has a gift that allows her to touch someone and find out what is wrong with them, so she knows that the Queen is being poisoned.

It was fun watching Silas fall for Gwennore so fast and having to wait for her to catch up with him and give into her feelings. He knew what he wanted but had to make her see that he would be worth giving up her home and staying with him before she would give into her feelings. I really liked the slow burn of this romance and how Silas and Gweenore worked together with the secondary characters to find out what was going on and who was behind it. I'm enjoying this series.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Apartment Life #319

This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that go on in and around my apartment complex in the past 24 years that we've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 24 years here in a weekly blog post.

A few weeks ago we had a lot of rain and it's been raining a little each week since then. The neighbor who used to live right there used to throw out bird seed for the birds each morning. But she moved out over a month ago. After the rain, I saw that something right in the same area she used to throw bird seed started growing.

I told my daughter it looked like corn.

Yep, it's corn.  I had thought that maintenance would pull it up but it's already dying off now. There have been lots of clouds but no more rain.
---

Back in May I told you in this post that someone had run into the fence that separates my courtyard from the walking path and it was destroyed. Well the city finally came out and fixed it last week. Here's our new fence.

To the right is my apartment building and my courtyard and in the middle is the fence. The path that I walk Facor on is on the left and further left is the sound wall. I was just happy that they left a small section open down by the blue trash can so we can walk through the fence to get to the path where I don't have to walk up and down the steps. I have Osteoarthritis in my knees and hips and going up and down stairs hurts a lot.

---

We can't end the week without some police car pictures. lol
My neighbors across from me down at the end of the building were fighting. One guy likes to scream at the top of his lungs when they argue. It's two guys that live there, roommates, brother's...not sure but they do fight like siblings let me tell you. Later that night when Falcor woke me up at 2am because he needed to go out, I stood in the courtyard with Falcor and could hear them yelling at each other again.

The high this week was 106F/41C
The low this week was 79F/26C

So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

Book Review: Alien's Temptation by Tina Moss

Book Description

I’m the captain of Earth’s moonbase. I can handle any mission. I do not need a partner, even if he is a sexy-as-sin alien commander, who looks at me like he’s trying to decide between throttling me or…something else.

His grumpy demeanor and dominant streak make me want to shake him, but I can’t deny the heat between us. Do I dare put my hand to the flame? I’ve been burned before. And I’ve guarded my heart ever since.

As we travel to a distant planet to find the rare substance that will save both our kinds, we soon discover the inhabitants have some odd customs. And if we don’t follow their sensual mandates, they’ll withhold the bounty.

The survival of the Earth-Rhonar treaty depends on our success. We can’t afford to fail. But when victory depends on a death-do-us-part bond, can I put my heart on the line and trust again? And will this alien warrior lower his defenses to let me?

Only the stars know.

Alien’s Temptation is a sci-fi romance and book three in the Earth Brides and Alien Warriors series, but it can be read as a standalone. Will they find their brides? Steamy seduction, fated mates, and a happily-ever-after guaranteed.

My Review

Tor's planet was ravaged when the Versaken killed all their female's. Now the males become empty, without emotion because they don't have mate's. But Tor's people, the Rhonar Warriors have found that they can mate with human females if they can find a mate among the Earthlings. But the Earth's government won't agree to a treaty between our two people's unless the Rhonar Warriors can prove that they can keep Earth safe.

So Jane, who is a captain of Earth's moonbase agrees to go on a mission with the grumpy Tor to Sense VII to get ergamite, which would prove to Earth's government that they would be safe. But Tor is very gruff with Jane because he's trying not to act on his feelings for her since he knows she is his mate. But he wants to wait to tell her until there is a treaty between their people. But their passion will not take a back seat to this mission. Not when they are both lusting after each other. No matter how short or iterating Tor is to Jane, she still finds him to be a very handsome alien that she has a hard time not fantasizing about even when she wants to throttle him.

The snarkiness between them was really funny to watch because she has no idea how hard he is trying not to give in to his feelings. She just thinks that he's a jerk so she pushes his buttons to drive him crazy at every turn. That was fun to watch.

What they have to endure together once on Sense VII in order to get the ergamite, was comical but it really brought them closer together and made it impossible for Tor not to show her he isn't the jerk she thinks he is. This is my first time reading this author or this series but I'm looking forward to reading more from this author.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Disclosure: I received a free copy of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Book Review: Blood & Vows by K. Easton

Book Description

Never make a deal with the devil–especially if that deal entails holy matrimony. There’s only one rule my mother passed down to me before she died: Never venture into the east side of Edinburgh.

I never questioned it.
There are creatures in this world that could hurt us, she’d said. So, I stay away—until my life hits rock bottom, and I find myself curious about the forbidden side of the ancient city.

It doesn’t seem all that different here–bars, clubs, restaurants. Just like the human side. One too many drinks later, he finds me. A silly poem and a whispered wish are all it takes for him to rip through the mirror between realms and pin me against a wall. Cruel, inhuman, cunning. A demon—an actual prince from hell. With horns. What could he possibly want from me?

Marriage, apparently.
Because as it turns out, Bloody Marius is dead serious about upholding his end of the deal.

Blood & Vows is a dark retelling of the legend of Bloody Mary. It is a paranormal romance novella that will leave your kindle sizzling. Please note that this book has dark themes such as forced marriage, kidnapping, dubious consent, violence, and explicit language, which may be triggering for some.

My Review

Liz was told by her mother not to go to the other side of the city, it's dangerous. But after her mother dies and her life starts going down hill fast, she decides to throw caution to the wind and go there anyway. Not knowing that her life is about to change in ways that she never could have imagined, she doesn't realize that she might be in danger until it's too late for her to do anything about it.

When Marius comes through the mirror and claims Liz is his soon to be wife, she's not sure what's going on. Unfortunately Liz's mother made a pact with the devil, quite literally and now she has no way of escaping Marius because he's a powerful demon and can just make her come with him if she won't go of her own free will.

The secrets that were kept from her were revealed to her and the twists that come are quite exciting. At first she thinks she's going to just be his slave but when he slowly reveals that he isn't really a bad guy, and she starts to get to know him, they get along a lot better. The romance was so sweet and spicy at the same time which was fun to read. I wasn't too sure about him at first but I ended up really liking him. I think she was really good for him too.

I was mad at Liz's mother though. She should have told her why she didn't want her to go to the other part of the city. But this ended up being pretty good for a novella so I will forgive the mother.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Apartment Life #318

This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that go on in and around my apartment complex in the past 24 years that we've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 24 years here in a weekly blog post.

The police were on my street and had someone from drug dealer's apartment at the front of their car. I waited to see if he was going to be arrested but he wasn't. They let him go after questioning and running his name I presume. As the police were leaving he was yelling, "You know you did me wrong!"

----

He's baaack. Drug dealer is out of jail and the druggies are right back in his place again. All hours of the day and night *I have not been able to get a picture of him yet for those who are waiting*  In the  morning he has his motorcycle in the courtyard and was revving the hell out of it. It was loud as hell.

On Monday I was walking Falcor and one of the homeless people was out on the path were I walk and was pacing back and forth, yelling and screaming to himself about how he was sleeping in front of some lady's apartment across the street that morning and she woke him up and told him to leave because he was scaring her kids. He started talking to me and said, she scared her own kids, effing ugly heifer. lol
He asked me if I've seen him cleaning up after some of the other homeless people, and how he picks up the used needles and other stuff and I said yes, because I have. He says, I've paid my dues around here, that heifer should have let me just sleep. I wasn't going to say anything because he was so upset and you just never know about people.

Then he said my maintenance man told him he had to leave because he didn't live here and said maintenance man walks over to the big trash can and he starts yelling at him again. So I walked away as they were yelling at each other. As I'm walking back into my courtyard drug dealers says to me, "You see what I have to deal with?" I asked, "What do you mean?"

He says, "He's mad at me because I won't let him in because he wasn't respectful to me." I said, "He's not mad at you, he's mad because some woman across the street wouldn't let him sleep in front of her door this morning. But if you didn't let those people into your apartment, you wouldn't have problems like that."

He had the nerve to tell me that he doesn't let anyone into his apartment.  So I said, "Yeah you do. There are people coming and going from your apartment all day and night for the past few years. Everyone around here knows what goes on in your apartment."

He says, "It's not like that. You don't understand."
I said, "I understand that you have all these homeless people and drug addicts coming and going from your apartment all hours of the day and night. "

He's like, "I was in jail, I had no control over who was in my apartment for the last month."
I said, "I know, several of your neighbors called the police trying to get all the people out of your apartment while you were in jail and Theresa was in the hospital. But the police wouldn't do anything because you had let all those people in your place before you were ever gone."

He says, "I don't let anyone in my apartment, and they pillaged all through my things and I'm not the only one who lives there." So now he was trying to blame it all on his wife.

I said, "I am up all hours of the day and night with this dog because of his sensitive stomach and I see people coming at going from your door at 3, 4, 5 AM all the time. And I see you letting them in, they stay for a few seconds and they leave. I'm not stupid, no one around here is and everyone knows what's going on in your apartment.  I could go on a month long trip to the Bahamas and no one would go in my apartment because I don't let anyone in to begin with.

He yelled at me and said, "You don't talk to no one around here!"
I said, "Exactly."

He said, "I'm just not going to get anywhere with you."
I just said, "Nope." And I walked to my apartment.

More was said but I don't remember everything we said to each other. This is the first time I've said more than hello to drug dealer but I was done with his BS and was in a bad mood that day.

---

So other than that and my neighbor telling me I need to date again and I need a man in my life, and trying to fix me up with my 70 year old neighbor...it was a fairly quiet week. lol

The high this week was 100F/37C
The low this week was 78F/25C

So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

What did I receive?

A print book from the publisher for review.
A bookmark I won. The postmark was from May, so I guess it got lost in the mail before I got it. lol
Laneige sleep mask cream for the face.

I'm looking forward to reading this book. I don't get a lot of books from publisher's in the mail so this was a happy surprise.

I've tried the Laneige sleep mask before and really liked it. You just put a little on before bed and it is supposed to help brighten and moisturize your skin over night. It does make my skin feel moisturized for sure though.

Book Review: Playing With Fyre by Cara bristol

Book Description

Will a forbidden love forged in fyre bond them or destroy them?
Former Secret Service agent Henry Winslow comes to planet Draco to help a friend. He intends to return to Earth, but when he encounters a mysterious woman in bridal white, something about her grabs him and won’t let him go. His infatuation is crazy, futile. She’s an alien dragoness, a priestess, and possibly literally divine. To pursue her would be playing with fyre.

After a devastating loss, dragon-shifter O’ne seeks vengeance at the Temple of the Eternal Fyre. Unexpectedly, she is exalted to priestess and bonded to the sacred flame, transforming her life to one of duty and devotion. Then Henry arrives, and the mostly human man awakens her secret yearnings. To succumb to her taboo desires would be playing with fyre.

Surrendering to forbidden temptations, Henry and O’ne soon will discover when they play with fyre they’re going to get burned.

Playing with Fyre is the heart-stopping, fiery conclusion to the Alien Dragon Shifter alien romance trilogy.

My Review

Henry is a former secret service agent that meets O'ne and doesn't realize that she's the priestess of Draco. Draco is the planet the alien dragon shifters live on and while they are somewhat friendly with Earth and the humans, not all of the dragon shifters like humans. Draco is soon going to be impossible for the dragon shifters to live on so they have been looking for a new planet and when they find one, a few humans put up a fight over it because of something on the planet that could make them a lot of money. This just makes the dragon shifters dislike humans more. But O'ne feels something for Henry even though she shouldn't. They know that they only have a few days together and after that Henry will be going back to Earth and O'ne will have to go back to being the Priestess which is a full time job.

But more humans make trouble on the new planet and Henry has no way to get home after all the ships are stopped from coming to the new planet or going to Earth. O'ne knows that she isn't supposed to have a mate and a human is even worse. Her people will never accept that but she's been The Priestess for over 10,000 and she thinks she is due for something for herself even though she knows deep down this will never work, she can't stop herself from seeing Henry because the pull and attraction between them is strong.

I've read the first two books in this trilogy and really liked them. I don't know why it took me so long to read this last book in the trilogy because it was really good. I loved the ending and had no idea what would happen but I loved the ending.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Book Review: Ancient Desire by N.J. Walters

Book Description

Nothing was supposed to wake half dragon, half human Lucius from his Deep Sleep. Nothing. And yet something, or rather someone has. The unexpectedly attractive human not only touched him. She kissed him. Now Lucius is awake, and more powerful than he has ever been in his 4,000 years of existence. And once he finds out who led her to his cave, he’ll deal with his 300 years of hunger…

College professor Raine Carson spent her life obsessed with myths and legends. And now she’s woken one up. Only, Lucius is nothing like anything she’s ever seen or read about in her history books. Because this man is part sexy badass and part terrifying…monster. Yet she wants him with a hunger like nothing she’s ever felt before.

Lucius used to be part of the Forgotten Brotherhood—a ruthless group of paranormal assassins. Now he’s unsure if his former Brothers are their allies…or enemies. All he knows is that someone is hunting him, and Raine is just as tangled up in this mess as he is. And he’ll protect her—even if it means unleashing his Dragon and all of its power.

My Review

Raine gets a grant from the Angel Foundation to study a dragon statue that was found in a cave. It's in perfect condition and she just can't believe her luck. Raine is a college professor who is intrigued by myths and legends like dragons so she's so excited to see the dragon statue. But her guide to the cave betrays her, setting off an explosion that seals off the entrance of the cave, trapping her inside with the dragon statue. What she doesn't know is once she touches the statue, the dragon awakens but doesn't let her know for a while.

Lucius is a Drakon. His father was a dragon and his mother was a human. He can transform into both dragon and human forms. But he was so fed up with humans, Dragons and Drakons that he decided to go to sleep, not expecting to wake up again. So when this little human wakes him up from his deep sleep, he's not sure he's going to help her once she is trapped inside the cave with him. But the longer she is there, the more determination he sees from her, the more he feels drawn to help her.

Raine tries to get out of the cave on her own and she talks to herself a lot, which drove Lucius crazy at first. He watches her, listens to the conversations she has with herself and finally let's her know he's real. What a shock that was.

Once they're out of the cave they have to figure out why they wanted her dead or in the cave with him and how do they even know what he is. They get in touch with Maccus who is his friend and leader of The Brotherhood. The meeting doesn't go well though and Lucius and Raine find themselves in danger a few times. But the pull they feel for one another is undeniable so it was so much fun to watch them fall head over heels for each other.

I loved seeing some of the other characters from previous books make an appearance as well as meet new ones. Finally finding out what was going on and why was fun and all I can say is, this was another great installment in the series. This has quickly become one of my all time favorite series to read. Each book can be read a standalone but the characters backstories and how they all fit together will make more sense if you read this in order.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Disclosure: I was given an e-ARC of this book via NetGalley but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 24 years here in a weekly blog post.

I heard a bunch of noise outside my bedroom window at 7am one morning (Last Week) and saw this. I didn't readily know what they were doing. I didn't post this last week because my post was already so long.

The crane swung it to the apartment's across from me.

In this heat, I guess the air conditioning unit they had wasn't working well.

So the owner had to replace it with a new one.

---

My camera doesn't take great pictures at night but I was able to get a picture of this police car that parked here after the police helicopter had been up shining its light on my street for a few minutes. The cop got out and came into my courtyard somewhere but I didn't see where.

The high this week was 103F/39C
The low this week was 80F/26C

So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

I don't like many Cradle of Filth's song but this one is one of my all time favorite songs. I hope you enjoy it too. I know I've posted this song before but I think it's been years. And because I don't think most of my newer viewers have heard this, I wanted to post it again because everyone should hear this at least once.

Book Review: Mistletoe Cowboy by Diana Palmer

Book Description

In this heartwarming story of holiday romance, one cowboy is ready for love—whether he knows it yet or not . . .

Horse whisperer Parker doesn't drink, smoke, or gamble, and he doesn't have much to do with women, either. But that may change when a runaway Palomino leads him to his small Colorado town’s new schoolteacher. Widowed Katy, and her sweet daughter, are new in Benton. But while the little girl can’t even ride yet, Katy’s not new to horses or ranching. It seems she and Parker have a few things in common—including hearts in need of healing. With Christmas around the corner, could kisses under the mistletoe bring the handsome wrangler the gift of his very own family?

My Review

After her husband dies, Katy and her young daughter move back to her grandmother's ranch which is in need of some repairs. But Katy knows that they are safe there and they need a new start. Teddie is her 11 year old daughter who has adopted an abused horse after the owner was arrested for the abuse. Teddie loves the horse but doesn't know much about them. When the horse gets out, Teddie runs after it and that's when she meets Parker. Parker is a ranch hand and horse trainer for a nearby ranch and he's good friends with the wealthy ranch owner.

Parker is talking with Teddie when her mom finds her and they all talk about the horse. Parker and Katy meet for the first time and Parker decides to help Katy out around her ranch and with the horse, and training Teddie in what to do with it. Parker and Katy spend more time together and even though both of them are slow to give in to what they feel because of past hurts in both of their lives, they do get closer.

Of course there's a misunderstanding that comes between them because they don't have great communication skills and don't talk. So they have to find a way to work that out. The one problem I had with this book was that Teddie acted much more mature than a 11 year old would.

I've been reading this series for such a long time but somehow missed this one. I know the wealthy ranch owner Parker works for and read he and his wife's story a while back. After reading the books in this series for so long, you feel like you know everyone and how they're going to react at times.

I always know what author to go to when I want a feel good romance. I enjoyed this story.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Last week we had a lot of rain, clouds and humidity. All those clouds made for some really pretty sunsets. These were taken the same night, just a few minutes apart.

Review: Daily Goodie Box- August

The Daily Goodie Box has been around since about July of 2016. I signed up for an account right after I heard about them. They are 100% free, you don't even have to pay for shipping. And for a free box it's a nice sampler box of products.

What was in the box?

KETO Taffy- I loved the taffy and so did my grandson. It has a great flavor, I really liked all of them.

Daily Immunity- Not my favorite thing but it can be added to drinks to cover the taste.

Liver Cleanse These teas always have a strange flavor. I tried one cup but I didn't like it at all. Not something that I would buy.

Rich Mud Butter- This was definitely my favorite thing in the box. It works well on my dry feet and hands and it has a light, pleasant scent to it.

Herbal Health Drinks- It can be added to other drinks and be ok. Not something that I would use though.

Crunchy Mung Beans- I don't care for them. They are alright but they go better in a salad where they can be hidden by other stuff.

Banana Snack Bars- I liked these, the texture isn't bad and neither is the taste but I think a different flavor would have been better for me.

Facial Cleanser- This cleanser works well and leaves me face feeling soft. I like it and would use this again.

All they ask you to do is try the products and leave reviews for the products you got in order to be eligible for more Free Goodie Boxes. As you guys already know, I'm a fan of all these types of boxes. I love all the different subscription boxes and it's really nice to be able to try new to me products for free. This is a great box to try for.

Oh and one more thing, if you visit their FB Page, they give away Goodie Boxes to people who interact with their posts. So if you've tried before and weren't able to get a Goodie Box, there's even more ways to get one now.

Have you signed up? Have you received one of these boxes?

I'm a fan of subscription boxes and love trying new products for free so this was a huge hit with me. New products+free box = Fabulous!

Disclosure: I was given and free box in exchange for a review but all opinions are my own.
