Favorite Picture of the Week

Last month Ken found this little stink bug sitting in the chair with him. At first he thought it was a piece of food but when he tried to pick it up, the thing moved back out of his fingers.

That's when he called me in the room to get the bug and set it free outside. If you aren't familiar with stink bugs, they are called that because if you squish them they release a really bad odor. So if you see one, it's better to just put their stinky butts outside. They don't bite and they don't seem to move very fast, at least this one didn't.

Review: Shiftr Swipe Left For Love :Dina: book 1 by Ariana Hawkes

Book Description

* * * Can be read as a standalone book. * * *

What if your fated mate was just an app swipe away?

Curvy Dina Taylor hates the idea of online dating. It's something kids do, not 36-year old women, whose boyfriends have left them for the office intern. But her best friend Lauren has a secret she's bursting to share: there are men out there who absolutely love voluptuous girls like her. All Dina has to do is tap Shiftr, the cute little paw-print app that Lauren has just installed on her phone.

In the time it takes Dina to get over her shock that there are guys who can shift into animals, she's hit up by Logan - a dark-eyed bear-guy with a torso like sculpted marble and eyes like pools of lust. He tells her that he feels a magnetic connection to her, but before she can tell him that the feeling's mutual, her clumsy thumb swipes the wrong way, and he's gone.

Dina is distraught, but Tamika, the creator of Shiftr has a cunning plan that may just bring them together again. Will Dina find the sexy Logan in the midst of the eccentric matchmaker's beautiful, opulent summer garden party? And will they discover that they're fated to be together?

This is a standalone, short, sweet, steamy read, perfect for a lunch break, bath time, or a little dose of me-time, wherever you are. HEA and no cliffhanger!

Note: This book and all other books in the Hope Valley Dating App series are standalone and can be read completely independently.

My Review

When I found this book it was free and it might still be if this sounds like a book that you'd like.

Dina hasn't dated since she broke up with her boyfriend but her best friend wants to show her a new APP and wants her to date again. This APP is different, all the men are shifters and are looking for mates. So Lauren tells Dina all about the APP and the shifters and Dina can hardly believe they are real but when she is looking over the men on the site, she falls hard for one guy in particular. Only problem is Dina isn't tech savvy and swipes the wrong way and her dream guy disappears. Thankfully Lauren has a solution, there's a party happening where most of the shifter men will be attending and her mystery man might very well be there.

Logan was excited to find what he thought was his perfect mate on the dating APP and then she disappeared, so he was really hoping she would be at the garden party so he could see if she would give him a second chance.

I loved how sweet and attentive Logan was. He's truly a big cuddly bear and I really liked his personality. My only problem with this book was how fast Dina believed in shifters and how easily she got over her shock of it all. The instalove is another things that bothered me but I can see how it went with the story line for this book.

I enjoyed the book, it was a sweet, quick read and both of the main characters were very likable. It's just too bad I couldn't find this APP in the APP store when I looked. *wink*

I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.

Apartment Life #1

This is a new weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that go on in and around my apartment complex and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that happen in and around my apartment complex here in a weekly blog post.

This week I'm going to share a little back history and some of you that have been reading my blog for a long time might recognize a few of these pictures.

We've lived in this apartment complex for 20 years and we've had 8 apartment managers in that time. When we first moved in we were paying $375 a month for this 600 sq foot 1 bdrm apartment. In the past 20 years the rent has only gone up $200 and that's one of the main reasons that we're still here. The neighborhood has gone to shit but people come and go pretty quickly and we have new neighbors all the time.

When we first moved in 20 years ago it was a quiet neighborhood but as time has gone we've seen more and more drug dealers moving into the neighborhood. More police, fire engines, news people and more scammers around here.

A few years ago we had a murder across the street. Some guy busted down an apartment door and shot both people in the apartment, killing one of the people.

The police, news, CSI and coroner showed up. But that wasn't the only murder around here. There have been 3 murders on my street and behind the store parking lot on the other side of my apartment complex.

The police seem to be on my street quite often and I usually take a picture of the cars from my bedroom window to document how often they come here.

I never know what I'm going to see when I look out my bedroom window. One time there was a food truck sitting there and people from all the apartment complexes started walking over to it. They did good business that day. lol

For the most part we've gotten along with most of our neighbors but sometimes the drug dealers have people knocking on their bedroom windows at 3am and they get the wrong apartment *Mine* and then Ken gets mad after it happens 3 or 4 times and makes a sign so the idiots know what window to knock on.

And then there was the neighbor who lived right next door to us that set up chairs and planted some flowers in pots right in front of my door and directly behind my bbq. She even took a small dog house and put it behind the chairs for her small daughter to play in but her daughter wanted nothing to do with it. This person got evicted within a couple of months and the manager threw all of this stuff in the trash.

Someone gave us their bbq when they moved out and then the manager decided that she didn't want anything outside, not even bbq's unless you were using them. So we gave this to someone else. Our place is small and this was a big bbq, we just didn't have room to store it inside.

So that's all for this week but I'll share more about Apartment Hell  Life next week!

Freebie Friday!

Welcome to another edition of Freebie Friday, where I tell you what free samples and full sized products I received in the mail and how you can get them too. Someone asked me why I do a 'Freebie Friday" each week, so I'll tell you.

A while back I listed all the free samples and wins that I had received that previous year and so many people didn't believe that I could have gotten so many free things. So I decided to prove it by taking a picture every week and sharing the sites that I found the links to the freebies at. So now you too can get great free samples coming to your mailbox each week.

You can find links to great samples at Hey It's Free and Freebie Shark.

This week I received:

A sample box of Seventh Generation Tampons and Pads.

A $5 Amazon gift card from Crowdtap.

Did you receive any samples or freebies this week?

Review: DegustaBox- November

DegustaBox is a monthly subscription box filled with food and drink products. The price for the box is $19.99 a month.

You do not get to pick any of the products you get, it's a surprise each month. But they say each box contains 10-15 items and each box is worth at least $30. I like trying boxes like this because they usually contain products that I've never tried or haven't seen before.

What was in the box?

The Lovely Candy Company Chocolate swirl caramels
Walkers Shortbread Cookies
 Bauducco Mini Panettone Bread
Country Archer Jerky Co. Turkey Jerky
Bell's Seasoning for poultry, fish ect.
Goya Flour Tortillas
 Aneto Natural Chicken Broth
Goya Pica De Gallo salsa
Rufus Teague bbq sauce
Oreo Chocolate Candy Bar
Cafe Bustelo Cafe Con Leche instant coffee

For us, this was probably the best DegustaBox I've received so far. We've tried and liked everything in the box. Those caramels were gone within an hour of opening this box. Ken has a powerful sweet tooth and he loved those. I ate one of them and they were good.

I've had the shortbread, panettone, Cafe Bustelo, Turkey jerky, and flour tortillas before and we like all of those products.

The new to us products that we tried and liked were the chicken broth, Oreo candy bar and Pico De Gallo salsa. All of those were so good. I use the chicken broth when making white rice to give rice a nice flavor when done. It works really well.

The poultry seasoning tastes just like the other poultry seasoning I have and I can tell it's mostly sage which is fine, I like sage.

That bbq sauce was kind of a miss for me but Ken liked it. It just wasn't as good as some others I've tried.

If you don't live in the US, they now have a Great Britain Website. Now here's a treat for you. If this box looks like something you'd like, you can use code MARYK-ACB and get your first box half off. That's a big box of food for only $10! and you can cancel anytime. So if you're interested, go to the DegustaBox site and sign up and don't forget to use my code to get your first box for just $10.

Have you tried any of these products?

Review: Feral Sins by Suzanne Wright

Book Description

When female wolf shifter Taryn Warner first encounters Trey Coleman, an alpha male wolf shifter with a dangerous reputation, she’s determined to resist his charms. After all, Trey—who was only fourteen when he defeated his own father in a duel, winning the right to be alpha of his pack—can’t have anything to offer the talented healer besides trouble, or so she thinks. Taryn finds herself drawn in by Trey’s forceful demeanor and arctic-blue eyes, and she eventually agrees to enter an uneasy alliance with him. If the two succeed in convincing their respective packs that they’ve chosen each other as mates, Trey will win valuable political allies, while Taryn will escape an odious arranged mating.

But there are a lot of potential pitfalls to this plan—including the very real possibility that the wolf shifters, overwhelmed by their growing attraction to each other, will be unable to maintain the clear heads needed to pull off the deception.

My Review

Taryn wakes up in a cave that was decked out to be quite livable but not knowing how she got there. She finds herself face to face with Trey, an alpha who wants to speak with her. Taryn is an alpha in her own right so when she comes face to face with Trey, who she's heard is a psycho and has a wolf that is feral, she doesn't act scared like he thinks she will. No, she's pissed off and rightly so but Trey is surprised and excited not to find fear in her stare when she looks at him.

Taryn is a healer and a latent, meaning she couldn't fully shift into her wolf but she could partially shift. Her father and alpha of her pack wanted her to be mated to another alpha so he'd have an alliance with that pack but she wanted nothing to do with the male that her father had picked for her.

While Taryn has problems, Trey has a few problems of his own. His alpha uncle wants his pack and Treys pack to be united and the uncle wants to be alpha over both of them. Trey doesn't want this to happen to he says he'll help Taryn with her problem if she's willing to help him with his. She agrees and they start spending time together, getting closer and finding out that they have the hots for one another. But that's ok at first because it helps make their mating seem real even though it's only temporary, or so they think. The longer they stay together and the more they get to know each other the closer they become.

There are wolf pack fights that are down right bloody, betrayal, secrets, and twists that I never saw coming. This was one of the best books I've read in a while. Once I started reading, I didn't stop until I was finished because the story just kept getting better. I highly recommend this book.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Review:Beyond Shame by Kit Rocha

Book Description

Book 1 (of 9) in the bestelling, multi-award winning BEYOND series.

All Noelle Cunningham has ever wanted is a life beyond-beyond the walls of Eden, where only the righteous are allowed to remain, and beyond her stiflingly restrictive existence as a councilman's daughter. But only ruins lie outside the City, remnants of a society destroyed by solar storms decades earlier.

The sectors surrounding Eden house the corrupt, the criminal-men like Jasper McCray, bootlegger and cage fighter. Jas clawed his way up from nothing to stand at the right hand of Sector Four's ruthless leader, and he'll defend the O'Kane gang with his life. But no fight ever prepared him for the exiled City girl who falls at his feet.

Her innocence is undeniable, but so is their intense sexual attraction, and soon they're crossing every boundary Noelle barely knew she had. But if she wants to belong to Jas, first she'll have to open herself to a dangerous world of sex, lust and violence. A world where passion is power, and freedom is found in submission.

My Review

Noelle finds herself exiled on the wrong side of the wall. She grew up privileged in Eden but now she's in a sector where she was going to have to work in order to stay safe with the O'Kane gang. She had been drugged and passed out on one of the gang members who took pity on her and brought her back to where they lived. Noelle is surprised to find them nicer and more helpful than she was led to believe that the people who lived in this place would be.

Jas is attracted to Noelle right from the beginning and like that her new best friend, Lex is helping her settle in and show her the ropes. Lex takes a liking to her and gets her a job waiting tables and lets her know that she doesn't ever have to do anything she doesn't want to. I really liked Lex.

Now let me tell you about the world this book is set in...there's sex parties, sex orgies, sex in front of other people. cage fighting and a lot of violence. There was more sex and kink in this book than the last 10 books that I read combined. But it fit, this place was built around that type of atmosphere it seemed and I could see how this would happen. On one side of the wall you have very strict rules, no sex and people who break the rules are sent to the other side of the wall where there are hardly any rules and lots of sex.

Sometimes when you have a society where the males are in charge and sex is freely given, the woman get the low end of the deal and you start to feel like it's degrading for the women in the story but I didn't get that feeling from this story at all. The women have power and the men know it. They have jobs, they help out, they are held in high regard as members of this gang, at least in this sector in this gang. Some of the other gangs and sectors might be run differently but this book showed how the O'Kane gang treated all of their members right.

This is the first book in a series and it's unlike anything I've ever read before. There are some talk of the solar storms that took place a long time ago and got them living the way they do now but the book isn't about the solar storms and not much information is given about what happened. We see how people are living now in Eden as well on the other side of the wall from Eden and it's not all good. I read a couple of reviews on other blogs for this first book and I wasn't sure I would like it but this book was free on Amazon when I got it so I took a chance on it and I'm glad I did.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Review: The Wolf Within by Cynthia Eden

Book Description

FBI Special Agent Duncan McGuire spends his days—and his nights—tracking real-life monsters. Most humans aren’t aware of the vampires and werewolves that walk among them. They don’t realize the danger that they face, but Duncan knows about the horror that waits in the darkness. He hunts the monsters, and he protects the innocent. Duncan just never expects to become a monster. But after a brutal werewolf attack, Duncan begins to change…and soon he will be one of the very beasts that he has hunted.

Dr. Holly Young is supposed to help Duncan during his transition. It’s her job to keep him sane so that Duncan can continue working with the FBI’s Para Unit. But as Duncan’s beast grows stronger, the passion that she and Duncan have held carefully in check pushes to the surface. The desire that is raging between them could be a very dangerous thing…because Holly isn’t exactly human, not any longer.

As the monsters circle in, determined to take out all of the agents working at the Para Unit, Holly and Duncan will have to use their own supernatural strengths in order to survive. But as they give up more of their humanity and embrace the beasts within them both, they realize that the passion between them isn’t safe, it isn’t controllable, and their dark need may just be an obsession that could destroy them both.

My Review

Duncan is part of an elite team that tracks down and captures paranormals that have gone bad or break the law.  He was very good at his job but one day he and his partner are outnumbered and he gets bitten and turned into a werewolf. He's taken back to the base and Dr. Holly treats him but with his enhanced abilities including smell, her scent drives him crazy but that might be because she's not as human as she pretends to be.

There are great secondary characters in this story including Pate who is the unit commander. It's rather obvious early on that he's very manipulative and uses those around him in any way he can. I really didn't like his character but the choices he made really moved this story in ways that kept things interesting.

There are so many secrets and twists in this book, some of them become obvious fast while others are hard to guess until they are thrown right in your face. It's fun to read and for a story line to take you to a place you didn't see coming.

One thing is for sure from the very first few pages, Duncan and his wolf see Holly as their mate and they will stop at nothing to claim her.

This book was free on Amazon when I got it and it might still be. So go check it out if this sounds like something you'd like.

I give this book 5 out of 5 stars.

Happy Gotcha Day, Falcor

On this day in 2014 we got Falcor from our apartment manager who was moving and didn't want her 5 month old puppy anymore. Ken already loved the dog and had been asking the manager if he could have the dog for a while because she and her husband weren't treating him well.

This is the dog pen that Falcor spent his first 5 months in. The manager said he was too hyper to let out so she had him in this all the time. Every time Ken or anyone went into her office, the dog was always in this so when she gave him to us she also gave this dog pen to us and we just used it at night until he was potty trained. He wasn't house trained and had never walked on a leash before we got him. He was scared of everything and we suspect that he was abused since he always acted so scared and would start screaming when he saw a belt, broom or shoe.

He's a happy dog now and doesn't act the way he did when we first got him. He isn't scared of us anymore and loves going for walks, rides and getting spoiled. My daughter took him to Petsmart and bought him a shirt and a toy and then took him to Starbucks for some whip cream. lol

Falcor is now 3 1/2 years old and still acts like a puppy full of energy always wanting to play.

He likes it when some of the neighborhood dogs come over for a visit. He gets along with other little dogs.

He loves going for a walk now. He's much happier now than he was when we first got him. I'm glad we had the chance to get him.

Happy gotcha day, Falcor.

Happy Raturday!

All of the rats in today's Happy Raturday post are pictures of rats I've had in the past. Enjoy!

"This spider is almost as big as I am"

"I vant to suck your blood! Or a jelly filled donut, I'm really not picky."

"I think that pumpkin makes my butt look big."

"You're hair would make a nice orange coat."

"If I stand really still, maybe the spider won't bite me."

"What a rip off, it's not even a real pumpkin!"

Happy Halloween!

Review: Bound To Submit by Laura Kaye

Book Description

From the ruins of an abandoned church comes Baltimore’s hottest and most exclusive BDSM club. Twelve Masters. Infinite fantasies. Welcome to Blasphemy…

He thinks he caused her pain, but she knows he’s the only one who can heal her…

Kenna Sloane lost her career and her arm in the Marines, and now she feels like she’s losing herself. Submission is the only thing that ever freed her from pain and made her feel secure, and Kenna needs to serve again. Bad. The only problem is the Dom she wants once refused her submission and broke her heart, but, scarred on the inside and out, she’s not looking for love this time. She’s not even sure she’s capable.

Griffin Hudson is haunted by the mistakes that cost him the only woman he ever loved. Now she’s back at his BDSM club, Blasphemy, and more beautiful than ever, and she’s asking for his help with the pain he knows he caused. Even though he’s scared to hurt her again, he can’t refuse her, because he’d give anything to earn a second chance. And this time, he’ll hold on forever.

My Review

Kenna is hurting, physically and mentally and most of it stems from what happened while she was in the Marines. Her best friend was killed and she lost an arm. She's trying to deal with the physical pain and the phantom pain she still has but nothing seems to be working. She's distant and not the happy person she used to be and she wants more, she's just not sure how to get it.

Griffin is a Dom at his BDSM club and has been kicking himself for 5 years ever since he let Kenna walk out of his life because he didn't think he was ready for a long term relationship commitment. So when he see's her in the club, he does a double take because he can hardly believe she's there.

Kenna decides to go back to the BDSM club to see if she can get her mind on something other than the phantom pain in her arm. She's a little shocked to find griffin happy to see her there but she's cautious after he emotionally hurt her before and that as well as other things sent her running to the Marines.

Kenna has a lot of guilt to work through, she's hoping that being back at the club will help her with that as well as her physical pain but being back with Griffin opens up a lot of emotions she's tried hard to hide or keep pushed back so she doesn't have to deal with them.

I really liked Griffin, I started out not liking him because of how he pushed her away but he really redeemed himself during this book.

I really liked or wanted to like this book as I was reading it but I had a few problems with a couple of things. First, Kenna hasn't seen Griffin in 5 years because he told her he wasn't interested in a relationship when she told him she loved him. It hurt her so badly that she cut her phone off, moved and joined the Marines. So now that she's emotionally vulnerable she wants to subject herself to the same man who emotionally hurt her before? I had a big problem with that and I didn't like it. The second thing was Kenna just fell back for him too fast. He hurt her before, she's now emotionally a mess and when they meet back up it seemed like even though she wanted to go slow she just slipped right back into a routine with him and she believed what he said about missing her and how sending her away had been a mistake. Maybe it's just me but I don't think I could have trusted him again so easily.

Now but for those to things about the storyline that I didn't care for, I did like this story but it was hard to believe that they just fell back together so easily. I did enjoy the other parts of the book and ended up liking Griffin and how he helped her through the problems she was having. Even with the couple of problems I had with the storyline, it was a good book.

I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.

You might have noticed I didn't do a Freebie Friday post today. That's because I didn't receive any freebies this week. So I posted a review instead.

Review: Enlightened Ice Cream Bars- Frozen Hot Cocoa flavor

I received a coupon for a free box of these Enlightened ice cream bars and figured why not. They are about half the carbs of some other ice cream bars and only 90 calories. I've been trying to limit my carbs to 50 per day which isn't easy but since these are only 18 carbs per ice cream bar, if they were good that would work.

Just one problem...I didn't care for them. When I have ice cream, it's a treat and I expect it to be sweet. I mean that's why most people eat ice cream, right? They're looking for a sweet treat. So I was a little disappointed when I bit into this and it wasn't as sweet as I thought it would be. I was thinking frozen hot cocoa, cool it'll be sweet like hot cocoa is but it wasn't. It's actually a little bitter and whatever chocolate chips they used in this didn't seem very sweet either, just adding to the disappointment.

So while it's lower in carbs and calories...it's not worth buying in my opinion if you're looking for a sweet treat. I had a coupon for a free box but if I had bought them the price was $4.50 per box at the grocery store we purchased them at. I'd rather buy a Klondike bar and only have one a month.

Review: BirchBox- October

I decided to sign up for a Birchbox subscription box. It's only $10 a month and this month's box came with 5 products. This will be my last Birch Box though because I'm just not liking the products. I'm either giving them away to my daughter or it sits in my cabinet because it's not something I'd use. But my daughter likes the boxes so she's gonna start getting them.

This month I received:

Avene Hydrance Intense Rehydrating Serum
Embryolisse 24 hour miracle cream
Eyeko black liquid eyeliner
Lipstick Queen Lip Liner
QUAI Rose hair and body oil

The two samples or the face serum and cream I already used because the sample bottles were very small and there really wasn't enough in them to see if either of the products did anything for my face.

I'll use the eyeliner but the lip liner is not my color and the rose body oil smells good but I don't like putting oil on my skin because I feel like I need another shower. I wasn't really pleased with this box and it was the last straw for me, so this is my last box from them. Hey, at least this box didn't contain yet another dry shampoo. lol

Review: All Roar and No Bite by Celia Kyle

Book Description

Who needs claws when you’ve got a baseball bat? Lauren Evans sure as heck doesn’t.

Human Lauren has a protective streak a mile wide and one immediate goal in life—get her best friend out of an abusive household. If that involves a little bat-based redecorating, so be it. Unfortunately—or fortunately—a certain sexy-as-hell cop breaks up the fight before she has a chance to really get going. Grayslake police officer Van Abrams is too hot for his own good, and his handcuffs make all those wonderful places tingle. Too bad he, you know, arrested her and stuff. But then he becomes overbearing, demanding, and commanding. Suddenly Lauren finds herself in his arms, in his bed, and mated to his werebear butt. What’s up with that?

Werebear Enforcer Van Abrams doesn’t want anything to do with humans. He’s got reasons, and they’re damn good ones. He doesn’t need to explain himself to anyone, especially the curvaceous, luscious, gorgeous, human Lauren. Then, his bear decides Lauren is his mate and Van’s anti-human feelings abandon him. He still hasn’t figured out if that’s a good thing. Of course, when danger rolls in from Boyne Falls and joins with a powerful prick from Grayslake, Van realizes that, human or not, Lauren is his.

Van hopes he can kill their enemies and still make it home for dinner.

My Review

Van doesn't like humans but when he goes to a domestic abuse call and ends up arresting Lauren for assaulting the Mayor, he finds out things aren't always what they appear. Lauren was just saving her best friends life or at least saving her from being beat and abused once again from her dirt bag husband. I was rooting for her every time she hit the bastard but he pressed charges and she's arrested. But because he's the Mayor, charges get dropped, a quickie divorce is filed and papers are signed so no one looks bad and no one can say much about the incident. That should have been the end of it but the Mayor is an ass and he doesn't let it go.

Van knows that there's something between he and Lauren so when it looks like her life might be in danger he brings her home and tries to get to know her better but there's always something that happens to stop an easing into a relationship and this is no different.

Lauren gets scared, terrified actually and her eyes are opened. This was the part of the book that I didn't care for because according to their laws if a human finds out for sure about them they have two choices, become a mate to one of their people or be 'dealt with'. So in all actuality she really didn't have a choice, death or mate. I didn't care for that aspect but it did work out but knowing that Ty would have had to kill her if she had chosen the latter doesn't sit well with me. I don't think he or any of them would have been likable after something like that.

There's some drama going on with other were animals and there's a crazy conclusion to that story line but it really added an interesting bit of drama to this story.

I really like the little bits of Anna, her best friend who is getting out of a bad marriage that we see. I am hoping that we see more of her and her new man in one of the next books. I really like all of the other characters and am looking forward to seeing who finds their mate next and how it happens.

I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.
