How To Cook Rice Without An Electric Rice Cooker

So my electric rice cooker broke and I had to find a way to still make rice until I bought a new one. So I asked a few of my friends and they came through for me. I can now make white rice in a pan on the stove and don't need to buy a new electric rice cooker.

Here's how...

First you'll want to measure out how much rice you want to make. For every cup of uncooked rice, you need 2 cups of liquid.

I made 1 cup of rice because that's enough for just Ken and I. Pour your 1 cup of rice into a mesh strainer and rinse it. This is a really important part. if you don't do this your rice will be a thick mess instead of fluffy rice you want.

Next add your liquid to the non stick pan. You want to make sure you use a non stick pan because rice can stick to the bottom like crazy. I opted for a can of chicken broth to give my rice a chicken flavor. You can use water, beef or vegetable broth. Jut depends on the flavor you are looking for.

Next, bring the liquid almost to a boil and add the rinsed rice. Turn down to med low which for me on my stove is between medium and low. Stir it once and add a lid. Let it cook for 15-20 minutes and then check on it. Stir it and see how much liquid is left. There should be very little liquid left so let the rice cook for another 5-10 minutes until there's no liquid, turn off heat and then sit for 3-5 minutes with the lid on, this will let the rice cook the rest of the way.

It took me a couple of times cooking it this way to judge how long it would take to cook but the rice comes out perfect every time now.

  2. I like your idea of the chicken broth. We don't own a rice cooker either :)

  3. I've never used a rice cooker or heard of rinsing the rice. One thing I've noticed is that it was easier to cook the rice perfectly on my electric stove (last house) than it is on the gas stove in this house.

    1. I have an electric stove right no too. I've used a gas stove when I cooked over at my mom's place and I like electric stoves better.

  5. I usually just boil my water throw in the rice, make sure to stir now and then and let it cook for 10 minutes, then drain. It's not perfect, but it works. My rice is a bit sticky, but not too much. I have heard of this method of having all the water boils away, my sister used to cook rice like this. Might have to try making it like this once. I sometimes add broth to my rice, but usually just normal water.

  8. I love that strainer step. I didn't know about it and I end up with clumpy rice a lot. Thanks, Mary!
