Apartment Life #31

This is a new weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that go on in and around my apartment complex in the past 20 years that we've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 20 years here in a weekly blog post.

This week has been relatively quiet. This block wall is in my alley, I've showed it to you before. It separates my complex from the strip mall you can see through the wall on the other side. Over there is a K9 training center, Cal Ranch, liquor store, smoke shop and now a Mariana's Mexican supermarket.

The opening you see in this block wall has been there the entire 20 years we've been here and that's how people around here walk to these stores. It's the fastest route. Mariana's just opened last week and they hired someone to fill in this opening and the ones further down the wall, blocking access to the strip mall unless you walk all the way around the block. Everyone around here knew that someone would eventually knock down the wall they put up and 3 nights ago they did. I told Ken as soon as he told me they were out there filling in the wall that the people around here would not stand for this and a lot of others said the same thing because people were mad when this access way was closed off. I don't know if they'll try and fill this hole in the wall back in but if they do, it'll just get knocked down again.

On Thursday night my dog started barking because a couple of guys were running through our courtyard. Several minutes later the police helicopter was up shining their light on my street, Ken was looking out the bedroom window and they kept shining their bright light in our window but they left pretty quickly. Then a couple of hours later around 11pm, the police helicopter was shining their light in my courtyard and several police officers were standing in front of apartment #8. They stood out there for a couple of hours before Ken and I got too tired to wait and see what was going to happen. I don't know if they were waiting for a warrant or what. Friday morning I saw an envelope on their door. I still have no idea what that was about.

The saga continues...

So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

  1. I can understand why the business wanted the wall to be completely filled in to deter shoplifting and stuff, but, I guess I can see the residents' side who have a convenient path, too.

I grew up having practically nightly searches going on with the sheriff's copter overhead and then I moved here and they don't use a copter like that so it was almost too quiet at first. LOL

    1. I can see how that would be quite a change.

  2. I like that convenient path, but I definitely see how owners in the mall would want to make it more difficult for shoplifters to get away. Hope you're feeling well, mary! Hugs...RO

    1. Only Mariana's wanted the wall to be filled in. They didn't get permission from any of the other mall owners. lol

  3. Must have took a bit of doing to get that part of the wall knocked back down. If they break out the helicopter, you have to think something bad is going on.

    1. You would think. I have no idea. I don't think that wall is going back up.

  4. Maybe the cops were there because Mariana's called them to find the people who knocked down the wall? :-)

    1. Probably not since it'll just get knocked down again.

  7. Wow! I can't believe people took down the wall. Not having the easy access to the mall does sound like a pain.

Helicopters overhead twice? Doesn't sound quiet to me. :)

    1. There were no people out yelling at each other so if all we have is the helicopter, it's quiet. lol

  11. I'd think Mariana's would want customers to have an easy route to get to their store, not to put people off with walls?

    1. That's what I thought too. I guess there will be one whether they want it to not. lol

  13. Maybe the store should have spent money on making the wall more attractive rather than trying to keep customers out.

  14. That is crazy that the wall was put up because I would think you would want easy access for customers but even crazier that the neighbors tore it down.

  16. We lived in an apartment many years ago that was directly beside a Whataburger. It was amazing and convenient until they put up a wall, haha. I used to walk over there at 2 AM and get a coke and fries. Once the wall went up, I stopped going because getting in my car and driving around seemed like too much trouble. ;)

    1. Exactly. People were gonna stop going to these shops if they had to walk all the way around the block.

  17. I'm actually curious where you live (you don't have to tell me) since there always seems to be so much excitement around your neighbourhood and area.

  18. Huh. I wonder if it was just the new store who decided to do that or if the strip mall owner did. It looks like the opening is meant to be there. If the new store took it upon themselves to do it, the other store owners might not have been cool with it if it cuts into their business traffic. Maybe the wall coming down was an inside strip mall job ... dun dun dun. lol

    1. Ken actually asked the liquor store owner if they knew about the wall being filled in when he went to get a gallon of milk before Mariana's opened and he said they weren't even asked about it. So it might have been an inside job.

  21. Maybe they won't keep filling in the hole. I would like the convenience of it. Seems kind of silly to go to the trouble of filling in a small spot like that.

    1. I hope they just leave it alone. So far no one has tried filling it back in.

  22. That's strange they decided to fill up the whole now, while it's been like that for 20 years. Let's hope they just leave it like that now.
