Apartment Life #33

This is a new weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that go on in and around my apartment complex in the past 20 years that we've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 20 years here in a weekly blog post.

This house is across the street from where I walk Falcor, just down the street from me. They have two large dogs, a Doberman and a Rottweiler. The dogs will bark at anyone walking their dogs on the walking path across the street from them. About 2 years ago the Doberman learned how to scale the chain link fence and jump right over it and would run and charge anyone walking their dog. It even happened to me once.

The dog never bit anyone as far as I know and hasn't attacked any dogs as far as I know but it's scary having a large dog jump a fence and charge at you when you're walking your small dog. I picked Falcor up and the dog just stayed back about 10 feet from me and barked at me until I started walking home and then he turned around and went back home.

Several people complained to animal control who was at their house several times. They still have the dogs but now as you can see, they've put up plywood along the inside of their fence so the dog can't climb over it. It's actually worked so far but the dogs still bark like crazy when they see other dogs. And there are a lot of small dogs in my apartment complex that walk their dogs along the walking trail that I was standing on when I took this picture.

So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

I would have started carrying a gun after an experience like that. Those people need to keep their dogs under control properly. That plywood doesn't look like it would stop a large dog that was seriously determined to climb out.

    1. So far they haven't been able to climb the fence, not that I've seen. At least in the summer time the dogs seem to be in the house more too.

  2. Barking dogs are a real problem in southern Spain and a bit in France too. People keep them as guard dogs and often for unattended business properties. We go for walks in the country and there'll suddenly be 4 or five manic dogs barking savagely from the other side of a rickety looking fence. The poor dogs don't seem to get much in the way of care and attention so I think they're basically driven bonkers by boredom. It's so scary when they suddenly appear and I can't even imagine how frightening it must have been to have had one actually rush over the street right at you!

    1. That happens at businesses here too. It was scary but at least the dog didn't attack.

  3. Ones that charge you sure aren't fun. At least it stopped though. But yeah, such people need to have their dogs controlled better. Barking is what it is though. Most dogs bark at other dogs.

    1. Even my dog will bark at other dogs. But that was not a fun experience.

Our dogs bark when someone new comes to the house. But that's about it. There is a big black dog that we call wolfdog that wanders through all the yards up where we live. He's never tried to bite us or anyone else. He is just a huge dog, so we watch when we take our dachshund out. Stay safe in your dog walks.

  5. I'm afraid of most dogs, to be honest. Bassett Hounds are more my speed. 😂

I've been charged by so many dogs on my walks that I now know which houses to avoid. It's irritating!

    1. That really is irritating. When I used to walk my daughter to school I had to carry pepper spray because of all the dogs charging at us.

  6. That could be pretty scary wondering if it was actually going to stop!

  9. That sure sounds scary to have a large dog scale the fence and run toward you. And even the barking can give anyone and their dogs a scare :(

  10. Neighborhood dogs can be fun. My dogs bark whenever someone walks in front of our house and I can't seem to get them to stop. The neighbors behind us have 4 dogs and we have 3. Their dogs bark a lot so they did the same thing with the plywood. It is ugly but their dogs bark a lot less.

  11. One reason I would not want a small dog, they never will stand a chance.

    1. I can understand that. I wouldn't want a big dog in this small apartment though.

  15. That is a little scary. That could have totally ended badly for you. At least the owner did something proactive about it.

  17. How scary! Maybe you should carry some mace or something with you on your walks. Hopefully they won't figure out a way to get out again though.
