Favorite Picture of the Week

This sunset was so pretty. This picture doesn't do it justice but the clouds were nice.

Another day with some really dark clouds. I absolutely love days like this. The sunny, warm days depress me. Seriously. It's so crazy. I'm much more likely to be out for longer walks in weather like this.

I stopped by one of the metal tree benches again. For those of you that are newish to my blog, I'll post more pictures of the metal trees and benches from my neighborhood.

When my city enlarged the I95 freeway that's situated right behind the 18 foot tall wall you see here, they decided to do a beautification project as well. And they decided on metal trees and metal benches. It gets to 120F/48C at times in the summer here so sitting on a metal bench isn't happening in the Summer. Real smart.

All of these metal trees and benches are right in my neighborhood but they are all over the place in Las Vegas. And yes as you can see people do mark them up with graffiti but city workers come by every once in a while and just spray paint over it with the green paint to cover it up.

A metal tree and a metal bench.

A better look at one of the metal trees. They still make me laugh. I don't know what idiot thought this was a great idea. They're so weird but I'm used to them now. Thought I would post these pictures for the new readers who might not have seen them yet and for older readers who want another good laugh.

  1. The metal trees are just so odd.
Will be mostly offline the rest of the month, so wishing you a blessed Christmas, Mary!

  2. My first thought was how silly it would be to have metal benches in a hot climate.

  6. There might be some evil genius thinking behind metal trees and metal benches, especially when it gets to 120F/48C. The City doesn’t have to worry their beautification project will be taken over by homeless sleeping on uncomfortable metal or hot benches, like they do around here on bus benches. But I’m surprised there hasn’t been trees and benches gone missing to be sold for the metal.

    1. The homeless rarely sleep on these benches.

  8. As you say, who's going to sit on a metal bench in temperatures of 40C plus? How could anyone overlook the obvious?

    1. I don't think they really thought it out or cared.

  9. In those sort of temperatures you could probably fry an egg on those benches...

Yeah, there's also that LOL. But first and foremost...why not plant a real tree? It would be much prettier, and of course it would provide some shadow...

It's funny how you feel more cheerful when it's dark and rainy outside.

    1. Probably because we have drought conditions and get very little rain here. The only trees that grow well here are Palm Trees unless they have a sprinkler system built in to water them.

  11. The metal stuff looks cool but the real stuff would provide better results in the long run especially giving some shade to people.

    1. Yeah too bad they didn't put in real trees.

  12. Those are cool sky photos and fun trees too!

  13. The pictures do much more justice if readers right-click on them and open the full-size version.

Those metal trees are hideous and offer none of the shade or cooling effect real trees would provide. Just looking at the pictures of them makes me think of how hot they would be to touch, and that weird smell hot metal gives off.

    1. Yes, clicking on the pictures makes them bigger too. I don't get the metal trees when the real ones would have been so much better.

  17. That is hilarous...you think they would replace the trees with real trees.

  18. I imagine people might sue if they tried to touch one or sit on one in the heat of summer. They are odd looking things, but some artist-type thought it was a good idea. And had the right connections to get it done.

    1. Oh I'm sure the artist got paid a lot of money for these things.

  19. Metal trees and benches would be stupid in the hot weather, but real trees need a lot of moisture to survive which is hard to do in the desert. At least there's some type of color there.

    1. Yes most trees would need water and we don't get a lot of rain each year.

  21. I just had to laugh to myself when reading about the metal trees, some people are so dumb with their ideas, how on earth can you sit on a bench in metal when it gets that hot. Our thongs (foot ones) sort of melt when placed on the tarmac in that heat.
Your photos are lovely, the first one is just gorgeous with the sunsetting in the clouds.

  24. The metal trees are odd. I'm sure they get really hot in the summer. It's better to have living plants I would think. There are plants that can survive dessert conditions with minimal upkeep. Great pictures, Mary!

  25. Well, at least the city doesn't have to waste water on metal trees and it's so dry out there they'll never rust!

  26. I’m just amazed at the metal trees but I’ve seen metal benches in various places. Maybe none of the city officials have ever sat on one, though. And you have amazing dark skies there. So moody. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
