Apartment Life #61

This is a new weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that go on in and around my apartment complex in the past 20 years that we've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 20 years here in a weekly blog post.

2 years ago my water heater exploded *not really* and water leaked out over night all over the inside of the cabinet it was in, the kitchen floor and through the kitchen wall to our bedroom and all over carpet on my side of the bed. Everything on my side of the room that was on the floor got drenched and ruined. Thankfully it was just a few books and a nice pair of suede boots that were too high for me to walk in without falling down anyway. It was the weekend and we called the emergency number for the office and no one picked up and when Ken knocked on her door she refused to answer. So we soaked up as much as we could and put fans on the carpet to try and and dry it. It was in the middle of the summer so opening the bedroom window really helped dry it out in a couple of days.

Later that night though the bathtub, bathroom sink and kitchen sink backed up and smelly black water started filling the sinks and tub. The manager refused to answer her door or phone until Monday morning and when we asked about it she said she doesn't get paid to be on call on the weekends. So I guess too bad for us, huh?

The manager sent the maintenance man over who tried plunging the sinks and bathtub. He turned off the water until he could get a new water heater so we had no water. At this point it had been 2 days. 2 more days went by before we got a new water heater because they said they had to order one. And when they came to install it the maintenance man had no idea what the hell he was doing, so Ken asked the manager if he could install it with this guys help and she said yes since he used to be the maintenance man here years ago.

So Ken installed the new hot water heater with the help of the maintenance guy and then emptied the trap under the sink and fixed the kitchen sink. The plumber came out and snaked the bathroom tub and fixed the bathroom sink.

So after 4 days of not having running water in my kitchen, a stopped up sink and nasty black water that kept coming up in the sink that Ken had to keep bailing out, everything was finally fixed. Oh and don't mind my messy floor because on the day I took the picture I hadn't cleaned the mess since I didn't have running water yet. Falcor was right by Ken watching what he's doing over there. My kitchen sink got fixed! My bathroom sink was fixed! The new hot water heater is not leaking and we had hot water again!

I just think it's ridiculous that the manager refused to do anything on the weekends if something like this happened though. Just call a plumber and get that stuff fixed instead of leaving it for days. Thankfully we don't have that manager anymore.

So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

  1. I am pretty certain that the manager WAS employed to be on call on weekends. It goes with the job.
    Thank goodness for Ken.

    1. All the manager's say the same thing. They don't get paid on the weekend's so they won't do anything until Monday.

  2. Yeah, good that one is gone. Thankfully Ken knew how to do it or you would have been waiting longer.

  3. What a crappy manager, they owners don't seem to know how to hire a responsible person for the job. You're lucky Ken knew what to do and fixed the problem.

    1. The owners hired a management company and want nothing to do with this place.

  4. Prevention is the best cure. Be careful, and often inspect the various appliances in the apartment.
Avoid depending on others, as it's highly frustrating! Ken is a good example of someone being able to fix things himself.

  5. That manager was ridiculous! I once lived in the bottom level of a 3 story apartment complex and there was a pipe that burst. Water covered our apartment and it was terrible. I feel for you!

  7. Plumbing problems are a real mess when someone who doesn't know what they're doing gets involved.

  8. What an ordeal! That is not the way an apartment complex should be run. Things happen on the weekend and maintenance needs to be available.

    1. Right now we only have a maintenance man 2 days a week. So things are really backed up around here if something needs to be done.

  10. Unreal! I think I would have deducted 4 days out of the rent.

    1. We're not allowed to do that. You have to pay the rent regardless of any problems. I would have to take them to court and get a judge to rule in my favor to get any compensation, which just wouldn't happen.

  12. Yeah, they should've taken care of that on the weekend. You can't ask people to go days without water. I hope that you have a great 2019. Happy new year

  13. Sounds like a right mess and thank goodness Ken is a practical person - under Falcor's supervision of course! I love that pic of them together.
    Happy New Year!

  15. What a pain it took so long to get that fixed and how annoying the manager didn't reply in the weekends. Things like that just need to get fixed immediately. It's a good thing ken knew enough to actually install that. That is a great picture of him and Falcor fixing it.
