Apartment Life! #6

This is a new weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that go on in and around my apartment complex and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that happen in and around my apartment complex here in a weekly blog post.

A few weeks ago I talked about fire so this week I thought I'd talk about water. Water and fire are both very destructible when you live in an apartment.

This is my courtyard after one of the flash floods we had. We live in Las Vegas and from July through September is flash flood season. Any thunderstorm can produce a flash flood if it produces enough rain. We don't get a lot of rain each year but if it comes down really fast our clay soil doesn't allow the rain to soak through so it ends up on the surface and just ends up getting deep until it slowly seeps into the ground.

Our courtyard floods during the downpours and it can get deep. This time it was all the way up on the walk ways and started to get into the apartment but thankfully the rain stopped and the water slowly went away. But this happens every year and if the gutters aren't cleaned, the water stays on the over hangs and once they got soaked and actually started to fall down. It's dangerous if the roofs, overhangs and gutters aren't maintained the way they're supposed to be.

That's all for this week's Apartment hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

  1. Water can sure be just as bad as a fire, but at least it won't, hopefully, kill one as easily.

  3. Yeeeesh. I remember my first real exposure to flash floods was actually on my way to Vegas. Was going to stop in Baker and my wife and I just saw this wave of water rolling down the main road. We promptly got the fuck out and used the bathroom in Primm. haha

  6. Unfortunately, I am familiar with flooding. We had so many issues with basement flooding in our last house when we'd get 2 inches of rain or more in an hour. The city kept calling them "100 year floods" but they were happening every other year.

It just makes you feel helpless to watch.

  8. I have never really realized that Las Vegas is prone to flash floods. Water can be so destructive when it gets in places it should be.

  11. Wow that's awful. I live in El Paso and we don't get a lot of rain either but when it does rain, watch out. There are particular streets that get flooded to the point where they become inaccessible by car.

    1. We have that here too but it's a lot better than it was 20 years ago because they made more drainage on the streets.
