Favorite Picture of the Week

Have you ever used silicone ice cube trays?

I can't be the only one who's had a problem with them. Yes they work well but there's a weird white film on the ice when you use these. There's a weird smell and the ice takes on a weird taste as well. It doesn't happen with my plastic ice trays. I washed the trays, boiled them, washed after each use and the white film always came back. I ended up just throwing them away because it's just not worth the hassle it caused and the plastic ice trays don't cause a weird smell.

I love my silicone cooking utensils like the spoons and spatula and they don't get a weird white film on them so it must be something about putting them in the freezer. I don't know but it was weird.

  4. Good idea to chuck them - that's really disgusting. Never used them as we have a fridge with an ice maker.

    1. I have some of the cupcake trays and don't care for the silicone ones at all. They aren't easy to get the cupcakes out of.

  8. I have never had any of those, but I'm glad you told us about this. Did the actual trays have the same weird odor?

  9. I've got both plastic and silicone ice trays, but don't usually use the cubes in drinks. I keep the ice in case of some emergency (like swelling of tissue..).

  10. I confess that I use the ones where you add water in a plastic bag. It's just that you can't use it again.

  13. I've not used the silicone ones, just the plastic or, years ago, the light metal. I don't blame you for chucking them when you were having the film and the weird taste.

  16. I have never used silicone ice cube molds, we buy a big bag of ice cubes ready frozen …

I use silicone molds for baking and they are fine.

  17. I had them in the past and don't think there was issues... I now have one of those fridge/freezers that dispenses ice, cubed or crushed, at the push of a leaver so I got rid of them and can't even check. :/

    1. Oh that would be nice. Our apartment complex buys the cheapest refrigerators they can. So no ice maker for me. lol

  19. Never used them, but if they give off a weird smell and taste, I'd trash them.
