Las Vegas Weather in August
August started out pretty nice. It was hot between 100-114F but it was really sunny. This sunrise picture was taken at 5;30am. Falcor got me up early that day but I got a nice picture out of it. These mountains are East of me.
You can see the mountains even with the big clouds that way. I like the clouds because they usually mean rain. And we did get a little rain.
The mountains are really clear to see on nice days like this one. These mountains are West of me.
And then we had a lot of haze and smoke from the California wildfires. You couldn't see the mountains at all. This is taken in the same direction as the last picture but the mountains are not visible at all.
The sun was even blocked out from all the smoke for a couple of days.
And then we got rain clouds again. I love these overcast, cloudy days.
It was pretty dark for a few days. We had 3 days of rain which was nice. You can see the sound wall in the background. Directly on the other side of that wall is the freeway. The wall was built to keep us safe from the speeding cars and to keep the sound from from the cars from bothering us too much. The wall is 16 feet high.
The clouds just looked so cool.
One morning it was actually a little foggy up by the mountains.
Another morning the smoke from the California wild fires blew into town again and the sun looked red in the sky as it was rising for the day.
And for anyone who doesn't know this yet, I live in Las Vegas.

Thank goodness you got some rain. Be careful about the smoke, though. If it gets too thick it can be dangerous, especially to anyone who has breathing issues to begin with. That smoke in the fourth picture must have been pretty dense -- it's clearly daytime but there are no shadows, so the sunlight was substantially cut down.
ReplyDeleteLast year at one point the smoke from the fires got so bad here that the building just across the street from me looked murky. People couldn't open their windows for days because the smoke smell was so strong.
My daughter has to be careful on days like that because she has asthma. Thankfully the winds picked up and blew it out after a couple of days.
DeleteNot being able to see the building across the street is a lot of smoke.
I've never asked you how did you end up in Vegas? Are people born there? lol
ReplyDeleteI've been here more than 30 years. My daughter and grandson were both born here. My mom came here first to be with her uncle and then my brother and I followed her here. I'm the only one still here.
DeleteIt has been so bad here as well too!!! The smoke from CA is pretty bad, I mean I know both of us are living in the worst air quality cuurently in the world due to this level of smoke. Hope things will clear out soon.
ReplyDeleteBe careful out there. I don't go out much when the smoke comes into town.
DeleteI am so sorry that you had that dreadful smoke haze. I loved the photos, but remember that smoky air only too well.
ReplyDeleteThankfully it didn't stay for long each time.
DeleteSure quite the view when the smoke clears. We've had some here as well from all the way across the country.
ReplyDeleteYeah it's really traveling all over.
DeleteHi, Mary!
ReplyDeleteThanks for showing us the everchanging skyscapes above Vegas through August 2021. I'm sorry you needed to put up with smoke and haze along with scorching hot triple digit temps. For the homeless in your city, those conditions made life even more miserable than usual. Like you, I welcome rainy summer days here in Florida because rain lowers the temp a bit and greens the parched lawns. We have been getting regular rains for several weeks now, so we're happy, as long as the big storms stay away. On clear days, you can see mountains to your east and to your west. That's lovely.
Enjoy the rest of your week, dear friend Mary!
I really hope we get some more rain soon. Plus I'm really looking forward to cooler temps.
DeleteSucks you get the wildfire smoke. At least the rain cleared it up. Great view of the mountains.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I love the Winter time photos because all those mountains are covered in snow.
DeleteThe clouds were beautiful. We are big sky watchers at our house. All that smoke will make a beautiful sunset. I'll be glad when the rains come to California and give those folks a break from the fires.
ReplyDeleteIt did make for a nice sunset.
DeleteLovely photos, Mary! 🙂
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteThat smoke is no joke. I’ve been surprised that it can make it as far east as to where I live.
ReplyDeleteI know. I am too when I see it.
DeleteWe had a baby tornado yesterday, so more rain than you could ever want.
ReplyDeleteOh dang.
DeleteWe like your area, our Dad has been there several times through the years when he was still working. Pretty photos.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I like it here because we don't get many natural disasters.
DeleteSo hot 0_0
ReplyDeleteYeah it is.
DeleteWe've had a lot of smoke and haze from the California wildfires here in Utah, too. But it's rained all day today, so I'm hoping that will clear the air for awhile. Love your pics! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you. I hope we get more rain.
DeleteI'd love to be able to see mountains from my home. The midwest is so flat, there's nothing exciting to see. I'm sure that rain was very welcome!
ReplyDeleteIt sure was.
DeleteI wish I could send you some of our rain. the "cool clouds" photo is my favorite. I hope your air quality with the forest fires smoke clears up. We had haze from the California fires all the way out here in New York last month. 🌞
ReplyDeleteThat's crazy. I am hoping we get some more rain soon.
DeleteSorry that you had that dreadful smoke haze for a while.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed seeing your photographs and the different views.
All the best Jan
Thank you, I'm glad to hear that.
DeleteI love those early morning shots. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteI know about smokie skies here in Idaho, after our good rain we seem to be clear up of smoke.
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on and stay safe
The rain cleared it out for us too.
DeleteHonestly, I don’t think I could live there, with all the heat and dryness.
ReplyDeleteIt is beautiful.
I lived in West Virginia for a year and hated the humidity.
DeleteWe got a little break from the heat today too and it was misting while I drove into work today. Made my commute super fun *not* but I love the clouds and rain! We need the rain so bad and it seems like it's such a rarity. I wish they'd put out the fires so we could be smoke free!
ReplyDeleteI wish they could too. The fires have been going on for a while now.
DeleteI love those mountains, Mary. I am a fan of the dark, dismal days, and I love thunderstorms. It's crazy how the smoke made everything so dim and hazy. We just got a lot of flooding around here from the tropical storm that passed over, and then yesterday was beautiful. Take care.
ReplyDeleteI cannot wait for the Winter cooler cloudy days to get here.
DeleteI love a good summer rain. Glad the smoke cleared.
ReplyDeleteI do too.
DeleteI can't believe those mountains were just gone - not to mention the blocked sun! It must have been an awful amount of smoke. Thank goodness for rain!
ReplyDeleteIt was a lot of smoke. I couldn't believe it either.
DeleteBeautiful sunrise picture, despite the smoke!
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteWow- it got very hazy there! Amazing the difference in the mountain photos. I love the rain- so I am glad you got some of that weather too.
ReplyDeleteDoes the sound wall help reduce the freeway sound a lot? It seems like it would- being 16 feet tall- but I wasn't sure.
~Jess
It does somewhat but we do still hear the noise on the freeway.
DeleteUGH! That looks icky and miserable. And I bet eerie too with the sun blocked out!
ReplyDeleteIt did get really humid.
