Apartment Life #342/ Life Update

This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that go on in and around my apartment complex in the past 25 years that we've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 25 years here in a weekly blog post.

On Sunday night around midnight two people that live at the end of the building across from me were fighting really bad. They were screaming at each other, slamming the door and it went on for a while. The next morning around 10am, I saw these two police cars out front of my building and when I went back in my courtyard, I watched 4 police officers come out of the apartment that had been fighting the night before. I'm actually surprised the people that live next door to them didn't call the police that night. There are two police cars in this picture. One was actually parked the right way by the sidewalk and you can barely see it. One just parked in the street.

I got my A1C results back this week. 3 months ago it was 10.1 and now it's 8.5. My doctor is so pleased that I am really trying this low carb diet and my blood sugar numbers are better too. My blood sugar used to be 350-400 and now it's around 160-180. So I was happy to hear that.

My blood pressure is still really high though. It's usually around 197/98 and she's already doubled the blood pressure medication I'm on and this week started me on a Beta Blocker. Hopefully that will help. I had to buy a blood pressure cuff so I can keep track of it because she's worried it's so high.

---

Falcor is back to his old self and I'm still trying to keep him from bouncing all over the place. But at least he's feeling better.

The high this week was 68F/20C
The low this week was 38F/3C

So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

  1. Those results are really, really good - hopefully you can get your blood pressure down too. I am really pleased that Falcor is feeling better too.

    1. I hope so too. My doctor seems to think stress and anxiety is what's causing the BP to be so high.

  2. Good news about the blood sugar but bummer she had to increase your blood pressure medicine.

  3. Congrats on the results! Our health highly depends on our nutrition. I believe in keeping everything low, that is ,low calorie which includes both, low carb and low fat.

    1. I'm just getting used to the low carb so I'm not going to change to low calorie and low fat just yet. But I am eating a lot more vegetables and salad.

  4. I wonder if it's the stressful atmosphere in which you live causing the high BP (drug dealer, druggies, fights, constant police presence). I finally got a spiralizer so can try one of the recipes you previously posted. Also will be trying your zucchini recipe, but with ground turkey instead of chicken.

I hope you like the recipes when you try them.

  5. Hi, Mary!

I'm thinking the person living in the unit next to the loud arguing was willing to put up with it as a one-time thing, but maybe the arguing resumed in the morning, and it was then that the neighbor decided "enough is enough" and phoned police. Either that, or they simply didn't feel like staying up all night being questioned by cops. so they waited until morning to report the disturbance.

I am happy to know that your levels are trending in the right direction, Mary. Keep the ball rolling. I'm sure you'll be feeling better and better as weeks pass. We're rooting for you. I am also relieved to know that my buddy Falcor has recovered from his disc injury. Maybe the next time he is tempted to leap from a high spot, his instincts will kick in and he'll remember that he got hurt doing it. That instinct might enable him to adopt new and safer habits.

I wish you a healthy and happy week, dear friend Mary!

    1. That could very well be. They do fight very loud several times a month so maybe they called in the morning when he heard them again.

I am trying. I think my doctor was actually surprised when she saw my new numbers. I don't think she believed me when I said I would change my diet. lol

Falcor is doing much better. I still have to stop him from jumping off the furniture because he still wants to hop around mike he's a Billy Goat. lol

  6. Thanks for the life update. You are moving in the right direction. I’m in the prediabetic category and am also trying to do low carb, but thanksgiving didn’t help much. I’ve been on a beta blocker for 15 years and also keep track of BP at home. Are your readings a lot better at home? Mine are, so I know part of my issue is anxiety at the doctor’s office.

    Glad Falcor is better!

    1. I cheated a little for Thanksgiving but only ate a little bit of the foods with a lot of carbs. I just bought a blood pressure cuff and the readings are about the same. But I have a doctor who comes out to my apartment. If I had to go to a doctors office, I wouldn't go. The Agoraphobia is bad. I wish you luck on the low carb. It's not easy changing your diet.

  8. Good news on blood sugar levels, not so good on blood pressure. Hopefully the beta blockers will bring it down. I had bad side effects with beta blockers but no side effects at all with calcium channel blockers.

    1. I hope it helps too. Sorry to hear about the bad reaction with the beta blockers. But at least they were able to find something that you didn't have bad side effects with.

  9. Glad your A1C was better! And yeah that's weird the cops came the next day but not during the fight. Somebody must have called something in that morning or whatever. Anyway- hope you're having a great thanksgiving weekend :)

  10. Congrats on good health results, every step counts. I've just started another round of Liver Detox with Milk Thistle and Silymarin to clean up my liver from all the heart pills I take.

  13. Bummer about your blood pressure! That is high. I hope the new meds help lower it! You've been doing so well with the low carb diet! I'm happy to hear you've been seeing positive results from that. Great inspiration, Mary! I have several medical appointments that I need to take care of. It's been tough with the move and new job, but I need to get on it!

  19. I was on a beta blocker for years and I had to start taking a magnesium supplement for another problem and my blood pressure went down to where I didn't have to take meds. You should try taking some. I also seriously limit my salt intake. If I have take-out that's salty I can start hearing blood rushing in my ears. I hope the beta blocker works for you. 🙂
