Apartment Life #404
This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that have gone on in and around my apartment complex and in my neighborhood in the past 27 years that I've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 27 years here in a weekly blog post.
I noticed something this week. Maintenance has taken out the Air Conditioner is Xavier's vacant apartment and used Stucco and a metal mesh to patch up the hole where it used to be. They left a small hole and put a tube in there. I realized that they put a smaller air conditioner on the roof and are using the tubing to bring the air in the apartment. They used the same metal tubing they used for the gutter wall drain. Not sure this is the right kind of tubing they need for an AC vent but who knows.
Weird, Right? Another person in my courtyard got a new AC and they did the same thing in her apartment too. The AC part of the unit is inside the apartment and the motor is on the roof. It's quiet in the apartment and seems to work well so that's good.
They did the same thing with the office AC and now the smaller AC is on the roof of the office. I guess these are the new thing because now that I know what they look like, I've seen them on other houses around the neighborhood.
---
I noticed the woodpecker is back. He was way up in the tree which is why my picture isn't as clear as I would have liked. But he's hanging upside down in the middle of the picture.
---
I found out a few days ago that the neighbor who moved away 2 years ago that I used to refer to as, "My elderly neighbor" passed away. Her daughter told my daughter it was congestive heart failure. That's sad, she was only 10 years older than I am. We were still friends on Tiktok and I talked to her every now and again. ---
Maintenance cut down a couple of the dead Pine Trees in my courtyard. I took a short video of this one right in front of my living room window coming down. They tied a strap to the top and tugged it down towards the center of the courtyard. I'm just glad it didn't land on top of my apartment because that was a huge tree.
This is the first tree they cut down. He was standing on the branches to cut the taller branches off.
They tied a strap to it to make it fall the way they wanted.
Here's one of the guys pulling the other end of the strap when it started to fall.
Timberrrr!
The branches made a mess in front of my window, but they cleaned it all up pretty fast. So much for any shade in the Summer time now though.
The high this week was 71F/21C
The low this week was 42F/5C
So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

These sound like changes for the better (except for your neighbor's death). Maybe your building has got a new manager?
ReplyDeleteYes, there's a new management company after it got sold to a new owner. Just found out the rent is probably increasing $100 more next time I sign a lease too.
DeleteI'm sorry to hear you lost a good friend. That's always so sad. I love seeing your woodpecker which is completely different from ours. He would have loved the dead trees if they would have kept standing but you can't have that because of storm would certainly knock them the wrong way.
ReplyDeleteYeah the trees were dead. Thank you.
DeleteSorry about your friend.
ReplyDeleteThe owners were lucky. Bringing a big tree down needs professionals not just the maintenance guys. And I don't think using gutter pipes is a good idea for the AC either.
That's what I was thinking too. But these maintenance guys do everything. They've done the plumbing, roofing, concrete work, apartment maintenance and groundskeeping. I'm glad they got the tree down without any trouble.
DeleteI agree about the gutter pipe.
ReplyDeleteIt's tough losing a friend.
That tree work looked scary! Glad you survived.
It is. They got the tree down safely so that's good.
DeleteThat’s a cool way to cool. :)
ReplyDeleteyeah
DeleteI'm sorry for the loss of your friend.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteMy mom died of congestive heart failure although she also had dementia
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry to hear that.
DeleteYou're very brave to have stayed in your unit when the tree was so close. I would have made myself scarce just in case something went sideways. Nice shot of the woodpecker.
ReplyDeletelol At least they got it down safely.
DeleteI hope something else gets planted in the courtyard. I'm sorry for the loss of your friend, Mary.
ReplyDeleteThank you, I hope so too.
DeleteIt's hard to lose people, and it's shocking sometimes to realize they are not much older than we are.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it's shocking at times. I just had a high school friend pas away too.
DeleteThat's sad news about your neighbour. I'm glad you found out, you often wonder what's happened to someone when they move away, or in Blogland, why they're no longer blogging. Nice to see the woodpecker back, we had a couple which used to visit our garden but we haven't seen them for a while.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I like the woodpecker but I doubt I will see him around here now with the trees gone.
DeleteOh I'm so sorry about your friend. We've moved into 'that' age, too. Where every day we wake up is a gift. Or so they say. Sometimes I wonder.
ReplyDeleteI guess the trees were dead or dying, I can't imagine why they'd take them out otherwise.
Yes, it is I guess. Thank you. Yeah, they were dead trees.
DeleteI'm sorry you lost a friend. I wonder if the AC they're putting in are minii-splits and they are running the tubing and electrical through that metal conduit.
ReplyDeleteJeff, thank you. After Googling Mini-splits, this is exactly what it is! After watching them install my friend's ac and they used the metal tubing like you said, now I understand what they were doing. Thank you.
Deletesorry to hear about your friend. That was nice the daughter came to tell you. I agree that is a strange thing to do with the AC. Lots of tree removal. We have a woodpecker that comes back every year too. They are so cool. Have a nice day.
ReplyDeleteThank you. I understand why they used the metal tubing now. I wonder if I will see the woodpecker now that the trees are gone.
DeleteI'm sorry about your neighbor friend. I worked with a woman who developed congestive heart failure and and she was such a nice woman. I think she may have been my age or slightly younger, and also passed from it. It's a nasty condition. That tree coming down that close to my apartment would have scared me a little, too, but that and the air conditioner may mean the new management is actually doing something? Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteThat's why I took video of it coming down just in case it damaged anything. Thank you about my friend. I just found out her dog passed away right before she did too.
DeleteI'm glad I don't have to worry about doing that kind of dangerous work
ReplyDeleteYou and me both.
DeleteI'm not familiar with that style of A/C, but it seems nicer to not have the huge, noisy unit. It's too bad that they are getting rid of all the green in the courtyard.
ReplyDeleteYes, my friend let me see hers after it was installed and it's a lot quieter so I might be asking for a new one here before Summer.
DeleteIn addition to being quiet, hopefully the new A/C units are also more energy efficient.
ReplyDeleteI hope so.
DeleteHopefully they'll put up some other shade stuff for the summer. (Not likely, but we can dream.) Sad about your old neighbor. I hope the new A/C works better than the old. It seems to make much less of a mess.
ReplyDeleteYeah the shade is gone. I doubt they will plant anything out here.
DeleteIt's good the tree fell the correct way as intended, been a mess if it hadn't.
ReplyDeleteThe A/C on top of the roof is a good idea to a degree as long as the roof doesn't leak. This used to be done (on roof) here several years ago but they ended up on the ground giving the roof idea away.
Thank you. That tree falling could have been bad. The roof shouldn't leak, it was re-done a few years ago.
Deletewe have downy and red bellied woodpeckers come to our suet feeder in the back yard. I would love a pileated one to come one day!!
ReplyDeleteThe trees he was in are gone so I doubt I will see him again. Moved on to another tree.
DeleteI've never heard of AC units on the roof for apartment units, but the way you describe it it makes sense.
ReplyDeleteIt's much quieter inside the apartment with the new ones. I might be asking for one before summer now.
DeleteWe have ACs like that as well here, you can put the outside unit anywhere you like if you have a long enough cable, but mine is right on the other side of the wall from the inside unit. We do not really have central ACs in my country, so you have one for the whole flat, or more for different rooms or floors.
ReplyDeleteI have a window AC in my bedroom because the AC in the living room isn't powerful enough to cool it down in my room.
DeleteSorry for your friend's loss. Glad there weren't any issues taking down the tree.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteYes, sorry to hear about your friend, that's sad. Good thing they got those trees taken down.
ReplyDeleteThank you
DeleteHow sad about your neighbor! Too bad about that tree dying. Maybe they'll plant another? Love the picture of the woodpecker. I love seeing birds in our neighborhood!
ReplyDeleteNo more trees. They said they are putting in new rocks and a patch of fake grass.
DeleteSorry about your neighbour. We lost a neighbour just before I had my ankle break. He was a nice guy as well.
ReplyDeleteCutting trees is always messy!
So far this past month my neighbor and a high school friend both passed away. Sorry to hear about your neighbor too.
DeleteI am sorry to hear about the passing of your friend. It's always a bit of a shock when someone not much older passes, isn't it?
ReplyDeleteGlad the tree came down without any issues. I hope they'll plant something else that will give shade in a few year's time.
Yes it is. I had a high school friend pass away last week too. I hope they will plant something but it's not looking like they will.
DeleteThey do want to take away all things green
ReplyDeleteSure seems that way.
