Book Review: Aziel by Eve Langlais

Book Description

It took an angel to make me believe in love.

As a woman of science, I am an unabashed, agnostic atheist—until I meet my first angel. Aziel, with big, beautiful wings, claims he’s here to stop humanity from being annihilated. Sounds impressive, but I have questions.

Full of arrogance and demands, he wants access to my life’s work while blaming me for the coming apocalypse. It seems my innocuous signal seeking life beyond our galaxy succeeded. Someone heard my invitation, and now the world is in grave danger.

At least according to Aziel.

As I get to know him, I find myself reevaluating everything I thought I knew. More surprising than my sudden belief in religion, though, is my irrational love for an overbearing angel.

But will he defy Heaven’s orders to save me?

My Review

Aziel comes to Earth in his space ship with others. He's one of God's warrior angels. They came to Earth after intercepting a signal that Lilith and her teammates sent out from her lab. Aziel needs to find Lilith right away and get her to stop the signal before anyone else can intercept it and find Earth. They are most afraid of Hell finding the signal and coming to Earth because that would be catastrophic.

But Lilith is a scientist and she doesn't believe Aziel when he says he's one of God's warrior angels. But she's curious about him when he shows her some things and then she's convinced he's just an alien from outer space. So she gets him back to her lab and double crosses him so she can study him. She sent out a signal to attract alien life and now she thinks they have answered, she's not going to miss the opportunity to study one.

I found this highly improbable that she could have used human drugs on an angel to knock him out. But it happened. It just wasn't very believable to me. There was a lot of talk of God, a lot of preaching, a lot of looking down on the humans because we don't believe in this god or follow his commandments. Therefore if Hell does come and invade, God isn't going to save us because we're unworthy. They mostly just want the Suul that is left behind when a person or living thing dies. Elyon (God) uses Suul to create life on other planets. So the fact that Earth has so much of it makes us look really good if they can stop Hell from finding us. If Hell does find us they will decimate the planet and all living things as well. Because Hell has ravaged so many other planets they have many more demon soldiers than Elyon does so they can't fight the demons to save any planets the demons want.

The storyline got better over time as I read but it starts out really slow. Things start looking up when a great twist is brought out and Lilith and the other scientists find themselves betrayed. I started to enjoy the story a bit more then. There was a lot of backstory which I liked so we understand what brought the angels and demons to Earth and how but the preaching and looked down on because we don't follow this god's commandments was a bit much for me. There was a bit of a romance between Aziel and Lilith but it took a while to take off. I did end up liking the book enough to read it until the end though.

I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.

The Alien Christmas Rescue by Alina Riley

Book Description

When my ship crashes into the mountains, I crash into the arms of a very handsome silver alien guy.
I was hurrying home for Christmas, but the storm destroyed all my plans. When I wake up to the hulky silver guy, maybe the storm isn't the worst thing ever. Yet, I'm here, away from everything I'm used to and... they don't celebrate the holiday at all...

Between the cold in the mountains and the storm that threatens to kill me, am I safe? Is there warmth for me?

My Review

Hannah is on her way home right before Christmas when the ship she's flying crashes in the snow. Orcoi is a big, silver alien and comes to her rescue. When he finds her, he feels a pull towards her and takes her home as is their custom, until the snow storm lessens and he can get her to the hospital to be checked out and he can write up his report of the rescue.

But where this could have been a great Christmas type romance ends when Hannah wakes up and pretty much sexually assaults him within moments of realizing she crashed and was saved. Her attitude towards him was completely too pushy, too whiney and her language was much too crass to be romantic or even erotic. There was a lot of sexual content but I don't usually mind that if it fits with a good story, this was just sex. I felt no real connection between them and her pushiness was over the top.

Once she got to the hospital to be checked out even she questions how she's been acting and wants to know if there's something wrong with her brain or a concussion. I was hoping the author would throw in something about mating pheromones or something like that to explain Hannah's attitude and actions but there was nothing of the sort. A real missed opportunity in my opinion, because that would have explained a lot and I might have forgiven her actions if that was the case.

I liked Orcoi except for the fact that he went a long with sleeping with Hannah moments after she wakes up after having just crashed her ship which was a total loss of her ship. Why didn't he think that was strange on her part or think maybe she had a concussion and wasn't acting right? It was weird and a strange way to make them get together. Everything happened too fast and I just didn't feel a real connection between them.

I give this book 2 out of 5 stars.

Apartment Life #355

This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that have gone on in and around my apartment complex and in my neighborhood in the past 25 years that I've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 26 years here in a weekly blog post.

I had gone outside when I saw a neighbors dog running around in the street on my bedroom camera. I saw her down by the office and went down to make sure she knew her dog almost got hit by a car. She didn't care. She was on the phone with 911 giving them her details and I heard her say she had been assaulted. She didn't look hurt so I don't know what happened to her, could have been a different kind of assault. She wasn't gone long and is already back.

At the same time there was a guy sitting in the rocks staring at the rocks saying, "They're moving. The rocks, they keep moving." Dude was trippin balls! He was cracked out of his mind. All of the people, including the woman on the phone are known drug users and hang round with the homeless people.

I kept a look out on my camera because I knew the police were coming. The police showed up and so did the ambulance. The neighbor went to the hospital. I don't know exactly what happened to her other than she said she was assaulted.  Could have been a fight, domestic, or something else. I have no idea.

I went outside and got a picture of the police cars lined up after the ambulance left. There were 3 police cars and a car from the security company that patrols here.
---

I had a run in with this lady and her two dogs earlier this week. She has her pitbull on a leash but the Australian Shepherd puppy that is pretty big already she lets run offleash and he ran up to me and Falcor. I picked Falcor up and told her she should have the dog on a leash. She said he's friendly. I said, you know mine is not to big dogs. Plus if your dog pounces on my little dog he could hurt my dog. She just ignored me and walked by. Oh she made me mad. So if I see her out now with the dogs who one is still offleash all the time, I just cross the street to keep away from them.
---

My daughter was talking with one of the homeless ladies and she told her a few things. Apparently 2 homeless men have overdosed on fentanyl in the past month and died. One was found a couple of blocks away under the freeway underpass. The other man, Eric is someone that I knew from my neighborhood and he was found a couple of blocks away by the Fire Station. That's just sad.

Antwon who I've talked about before, here, and here. He got mugged and the thief took his drugs. So Antwon tracked the guy down, shot him in the leg twice and was arrested for attempted murder. He's in jail on attempted murder charges. I don't think he'll be back for a while.

Oh and long time readers might remember Jessica of The Jessica and Mikey Saga. If not, I wrote about them here, and here. Well, Jessica is now the Mayor of Tunnel Town. That's what I'm calling the tunnels around here from now on because all of the homeless people have been going down there and you don't see them on the streets all that much. I see them coming and going from the manholes all the time though. The homeless lady my daughter was talking to said that if someone needs something they ask The Mayor for help. I was shocked when she said the Mayor was Jessica. Guess she's moving up in Tunnel Town.
---

My daughter decorated the window for Valentines Day.

And the little Valentine's Day tree is up.
---

The Neighbor in my courtyard who's dog tried to attack Falcor a couple of weeks ago got evicted. A couple of neighbors including myself called and wrote to the rental office and informed them that the lady who used to live in that apartment had passed away a couple of months ago and her family was living in the apartment. They had a bunch of drug users coming and going from the apartment and the dog was offleash all the time. So I guess they investigated and found that those people were not on the lease and they evicted them on Thursday.

I saw them put their cat in a carrier but they left the dog in the apartment when the constable made them leave and changed the locks. So the manager called animal control to get the dog. I watched at least 9 people come out of the apartment when the constable made them all leave. There was one lady in the alley with a grocery cart full of junk that came out and stood by her cart, swaying back and forth, mumbling to herself as she stared off into space. A bunch of the people were acting weird as they stood around waiting to get into one of their cars. Pretty sure they were all high as heck. Animal Protection Services left a notice on their door if they ever come back fir their stuff they might be able to get their dog back too. I doubt they're coming back though...

The high this week was 75F/23C
The low this week was 39F/3C

So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

Saturday Vittles

My Daughter and I are trying to eat more healthy so I thought I would share some pictures on Saturday's of what we've made. Most pictures are from my daughter since she takes good food pics. lol

My daughter decided to make some homemade strawberry jam and it was good so I thought I would make some too but mine is made with a sugar substitute (Equal) instead of sugar.

You will need:

1 Pint of fresh strawberries- chopped
1TBSP Lemon Juice
Sugar to taste (I used 4 packets of Equal)

What to do:

Add the fruit and 4 packets of Equal to a medium saucepan over medium heat. Cover and cook about 3 minutes until the berries begin to release their juices, about 3 minutes. Remove the lid, add lemon juice and cook another 4-5 minutes until they are very soft. I used a potato masher and mashed the strawberries a bit. Let the fruit mixture cool. If the berry mixture is very watery, just cook another 5 minutes over medium heat or until it thickens a little bit. It will thicken more as it cools.

Once it's cooled, add to a jar with a tight lid and store in the refrigerator. It should last in the refrigerator about 3 weeks.

I added a spoonful of the strawberry jam to my oatmeal. I add a splash of milk and some cinnamon to my oatmeal.

Calories for oatmeal with jam and strawberries- 200
Carbs- 27

I'm on a low carb diet because I'm diabetic but I'm allowed up to 150 carbs per day and because I don't have many carbs the rest of the day I don't mind having this many for one meal. Oatmeal does spike my blood sugar a bit so a lot of times I eat this as a snack at the end of the day and sleep through the spike. lol

Book Review: Anna And The Alien by Honey Phillips

Book Description

Anna Elliott wanted to get away. But an alien spaceship was not on the itinerary.

All Anna needed was a calm, relaxing vacation. Instead, she finds herself enslaved aboard an alien spacecraft and forced to help an injured prisoner—a huge, golden-skinned warrior. Even wounded, he arouses her in ways she’s never known. But if he dies, so does she.

When the spaceship crashes on a strange planet, she must put her trust in him to survive. But the passion he stirs in her may cause her to lose her heart as well.

Jakkar is a Sardoran mercenary searching desperately for a new planet to replace his dying home world. He never expected to be injured, captured, and then shipwrecked. Forbidden to mate outside his species, he can’t help but be tempted by Anna’s curvy body and her caring heart.

Now he’s responsible for the small group of survivors—and the luscious little human he’s determined to claim as his own.

Can a girl and her alien find happiness on a deserted planet at the far end of the galaxy?

My Review

After Anna is kidnapped by aliens, she is set to become a slave like most of the other kidnapped aliens but her kidnappers force her to help an injured Jakkar who has a huge wound in his leg. Anna isn't a doctor but if she doesn't help they're going to kill both of them so she does her best and this huge warrior might be scary but he also aroused something in her and he knows it.

Once they are able to escape the kidnappers and they crash on a far away alien planet, Jakkar is now responsible for the people who survived. He and Anna help the other survivors and they try to make a place to stay safe not knowing when or if anyone will come to their rescue. So meanwhile Anna and Jakkar get to know each other better and find even though they are complete opposites with a lot of different things about their cultures and personalities, they seem to get along well. Jakkar wants Anna as his mate even though his people don't usually mate outside of their species. So when a rescue ship arrives and he informs his people that he wants to take Anna as his mate, there are some who are opposed to this and it causes a problem in their relationship. Jakkar has to choose what to do but things are going to work out because Jakkar is a saviour to his people for finding a new planet to call their own.

So while there are several problems that come between them, I liked how this ended. It was a good read.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars.

Favorite Picture of the Week

*Click on the pictures to enlarge them*

Here's a series of pictures I took one day this week when Falcor got me up at the buttcrack of dawn to go out. lol The light from the sun coming up could barely be seen but I thought it was pretty. The pathway I was walking was so dark too even with the street lights on.

As the sun came up a little more and the light came through the clouds I took another picture.

More of the sky started to light up.

Until this is what the sunrise looked like on our way home. I hope you enjoyed sharing our morning walk with us.

Everyone Has A Story, Here's One Of Mine

I've been thinking of writing an autobiography or memoir but it just never comes together for me but I figured if I write one story at a time and post it on my blog maybe once a month, I can do that. Maybe one day I'll pull all the stories together and put them in a book but for now I'll just share some stories with you about my childhood. Some of the stories will be happy, some sad and some horrific because that was my childhood. But they will all be real, things that actually happened. If it seems like something that people enjoy reading maybe I'll keep it going. These stories will not be in any kind of order, I'll just write them as they come to me.

Living In West Virginia

When I was 17 years old, I moved from my dad's place to West Virginia to live with my mom. She was living with her mom and step father (Buster). My step grandfather Buster was a mean alcoholic and drank all the time. So I tried to stay out of the house a lot and in doing so I saw a lot of stuff and met a lot of interesting people.

The girl who lived next door with her mom and brothers was always so dirty. She was about 10 years old and always wanted to come over and hang out because our house was clean. When Buster went to rehab to sober up a little for a month, my mom asked if the girl could stay the night and her mother didn't care. My mom found out from the kid she's never had a bath or shower that she could remember because the bathtub was piled high with dirty dishes. So my mom filled the tub with bubble bath and showed her what to do and gave her soap and a washrag and she stayed in there a while and came out clean. She was so happy. That night her mother pulled several of her own teeth out because they were hurting her.

After I met a guy and moved out of Buster's house, I was living with this guy named Charles. He was working in a mechanics shop and I was still going to high school, 12th grade. We made extra money by running moonshine from West Virginia to Ohio. And the couple that made the moonshine paid us by giving us fresh eggs, milk and chickens.

We also collected aluminum cans and sold them at the recycling place. We would take Charles's dads truck and find wooden pallets behind businesses and steal them because there was a reseller that would sell them for quite a bit of money and we got quite a bit for finding them. I know it was wrong but they had been doing it for years before I ever came along.

We also went to the small neighborhood dump. It was small for some reason and grocery stores would bring all their old products there that were expired and they couldn't sell and dump them there. I once found a huge crate of Fig Newtons that were sealed in a wooden crate and were only 10 days past their expiration date. I opened that crate up and checked out the Fig Newtons and they were fresh and fine. We ate Fig Newtons for weeks. I told my family about this and they have never let me live it down. There was nothing wrong with those Fig Newtons and they were clean in the crate. lol You gotta do what you gotta do to survive.

We found brand new chairs, tables and other furniture that got dumped there by a department store and took it home to our place. We rented a 3 bedroom house for $235 a month. It was 1987 and things were really cheap in this town, Guyandotte, West Virginia. So we were able to live there pretty comfortably with all the weird things we were doing to make ends meet.

But things took a very dark turn when I found out I was pregnant and didn't realize it for a few months. Once I did realize it, I only told Charles and we kept it from his parents. I went to the doctor and started having all the testing done. When I was 6 months along they did an ultrasound and found that my son had anencephaly (meaning he had little to no brain and his skull didn't form properly) his brain had not developed. They had me got to the hospital to do more tests and a couple of weeks later they told me for sure that my son would not live more than a few hours if I chose to let the pregnancy go full term and have him.

The doctors who talked to me asked if my boyfriend would come in and I called him but he refused to come. I went home with an appointment to go back to the hospital 2 weeks later to induce labor early at 7 month along in my pregnancy. The doctor said that if my son was born alive I could hold him while he took his last breath or I could wait and go full term and have him then but either way they didn't expect him to live more than a few hours. I told Charles all of this and he acted like he didn't care either way, it was up to me. He refused to go to the hospital with me a couple of weeks later, a neighbor drove me and dropped me off.

Labor was induced, I had my son and held him for almost an hour before he passed. I thought for sure that Charles would change his mind and show up but he didn't. There was one nurse who stayed with me throughout that first day. I was in the hospital for 3 days and I didn't realize that Charles did come to the hospital on the second day but only to come and get our son with people from his family cemetery plot to take him to the family plot and bury him there. I didn't know about that until the next day when he came to pick me up. He took me there to show me the family plot and where our son was buried. I had heard of family plots when Buster had taken us all to his family plot when I lived with him. So I knew they existed but didn't know Charles's family had one. There were only 14 other plots there on this piece of land. This was how his mother found out about what I had done and that our son had died.

I named our son Charles Conroy Coy

My grandpa's name was Charles Conroy and so it seemed fitting to me. Since I was there alone when filling out the paperwork, I named him what I wanted. Coy was my boyfriends last name and I just decided to do that for him. Our son's name was on the temporary marker for his gravestone when he took me there to see it. So Charles must have seen the paperwork or signed some when he and the cemetary people came to get him. I was pretty out of it at the time so I have no idea.

His mother, Helen was crazy. She lived on the same street as us and came over all the time to tell me everything I was doing wrong. I didn't want her to know anything because I knew she was going to freak out and she did. She yelled at me and told me what a bad person I was for doing what I did. Then she didn't talk to me for a couple of weeks which was fine with me. A few weeks later she saw me walking down the road while she was driving by. She drove by screaming at me and then she turned around really fast and came right at me in her truck. I had to run and jump behind a tree (it was a dirt road) in order to stop her from hitting me with her truck. I told Charles what she did and he didn't believe me.

The next day I went to a payphone and called my mom who was living in Las Vegas with my little brother and asked her if I could come live with her. Of course she said yes, she sent me a Greyhound bus ticket, and left a few days later. I didn't tell my mom anything about what was going on just that we weren't getting along anymore. Helen tried to hit me with her truck two more times when she saw me walking down the road to get to the corner store before I was able to pack up my stuff and get a ride with the neighbor to the bus station.

Charles went through my hospital bag at some point and took all the paperwork and polaroid picture I had of my son and gave it all to his mother who I am guessing told him to get for whatever reason. She refused to give any of it back to me before I left.

Charles had been really distant since our son died and I found out right before I left that he had been shooting heroin and sniffing paint and that could be why he acted so different.

I was on the Greyhound bus for 6 days and 7 nights. I had bought to a small Styrofoam cooler and stuff to make sandwiches. I made a bunch of sandwiches, wrapped them in aluminum foil and baggies and stuck them in the cooler along with some sodas, ice and bottles of water. I never got off the bus, I just ate a sandwich when they stopped for meal breaks.

I've been in Vegas ever since.

I didn't tell my family anything about what had happened or about my son for a few years after I moved to Las Vegas to be with my family. I didn't want to talk about it and truthfully I felt guilty for having him early even knowing that he wouldn't have survived no matter what I did. The only person I ever told the entire story to was my mom and I don't know if she ever told my other family members. If she did they never said anything to me about it.

I wasn't sure if I was going to share this story because some people might think I did the wrong thing. But I didn't want to prolong his suffering knowing that even if I let the pregnancy go full term, he wasn't going to survive. Keep in mind that I was only 18 years old and pretty much alone through this entire ordeal. I did what I thought was the best thing and I still think what I did was the right thing to do.

I can only hope that anyone going through something similar can read my story and know they aren't alone.

Apartment Life #354

This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that have gone on in and around my apartment complex and in my neighborhood in the past 25 years that I've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 26 years here in a weekly blog post.

On Wednesday there were three police cars park around the corner from my apartment complex. They went into the apartment complex across the street. There have been a lot of police activity across the street lately. One guy was arrested later.

On Thursday a police car stopped right in the street for about 5 minutes. But he never got out of his car.

A few minutes later an ambulance showed up and went into the apartment cross the street where all the police were last week.

One woman was brought out and went to the ER. I have no idea if it was related to what happened last week but it was the same apartment where three people were arrested after I heard the gunshots last week.
---
In the sky on Wednesday, sky writers wrote, "Find the truth." I found out online it's for a new show coming out called, Paradise.

The high this week was 60F/15C
The low this week was 35F/1C

So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

Saturday Vittles

My Daughter and I are trying to eat more healthy so I thought I would share some pictures on Saturday's of what we've made. Most pictures are from my daughter since she takes good food pics. lol

I have an electric indoor grill. I call it a panini press because that's what I used to use it for back when I was eating bread. So I cut a chicken breast in half so I had two thin chicken breasts. I put them in the grill and cooked them that way. I served the chicken breast on a salad made from Lettuce, fresh spinach, tomato, cucumber, celery and avocado.

Book Review: The Captive by Jenny Foster

Book Description

Cassie Burnett

I’m one of the few people who has yet to give up the fight against the Sethari.
I would rather die than surrender to the aliens who have enslaved us humans for more than one hundred years.

Then the unthinkable happens: a different race of aliens land on Earth and offer a trade to the humans. In exchange for healthy women, they will destroy the tyrants.

The leader of the aliens claims me as his to bear him healthy, viable children.

He’s strong. Powerful. Terrifying.

I saw how he destroyed the Sethari, and I’m prepared for anything.

Khazaar Drasurq

A life for a life—that’s the agreement.
We fought and won.

Now I’m taking the reward our people deserve: healthy human women who will give us children to save my people from extinction. The exchange brings Cassie into my possession. She is one of many who will bear my people viable children.

But when my spaceship crashes on hostile territory, she becomes desirable prey in the eyes of my enemies. I won't let anything happen to her. Nothing and no one will stop me—I will defend what belongs to me.

Even if I have to destroy the entire planet.

She is mine.

My Review

This trope is one I usually like. Bad aliens invade Earth, good aliens help us and in return they ask for healthy women to be their mates so they can have children. Our government is usually the bad guys and instead of asking willing women to go with the aliens, they make it something women have to do even if they have families they're leaving behind, as was the case with this book. But I like alien romance stories so I keep reading them.

After the Sethari invade, the humans are willing to do anything to get rid of them. So when Khazaar's people help and get rid of the bad aliens our government has to do what they said they will and hand over healthy human females as mates for these aliens. Cassie is one of those women and Khazaar has claimed her as his.

Cassie has psychic abilities that allow her to leave her body and even inhabit others bodies for a time. She can psychically talk to some others so this comes in handy when their spaceship crashes and they are kidnapped by other aliens who want to sell both of them into slavery. But the leader of this new race of aliens finds out about Cassie being psychic and uses her abilities for himself on his people. He's power hungry and an awful ruler.

There was a lot going on in this book, maybe too much. The book starts out great but then Cassie and Khazaar get separated and she has to use her abilities to help rescue them both. That whole middle part of the book of them separated and trying to escape lasted too long and hurt the story in my opinion.

I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.

Book Review: Chosen By The Alien Warrior by Skyla Stone

Book Description

He’s a celibate Ixionian warrior. I’m a temporary tribute “companion.” But finding love in the stars? I don’t think so.

When I signed up for the Ixonian tribute program, it was for one reason and one reason only—financial need…and maybe a little bit of an exploration bug. It definitely wasn’t to find love, and after all, that’s what we were promised. No love. No emotional attachments. Just celibate alien soldiers in need of temporary companionship—and we don’t even have to provide that, if we don’t want to. Just some conversation and company.

My alien soldier, Cassian, is everything I could have asked for—kind, accommodating, and respectful—even if he does have scales and horns. But he’s also gorgeous, and as the days pass and we get to know one another better, I start to wonder if my own self-imposed celibacy is the right choice.

It could be fun, right? I came to Ixion for a new experience, after all. A fling with a handsome alien soldier certainly falls in that category.

It definitely can’t lead to love—or to a revolution.

My Review

The Ixion soldiers get approved to find temporary companions in some human females who have signed up for the tribute temporary companion program. These soldiers have been celibate but are thinking that the women arriving are there willing to have sex with them after they get to know each other. The women on the other hand are told that they only have to spend time with the soldiers and talk or more if they want too and they are going to be paid for their time.

I felt bad for Cassian right away because the human female, Ivy he picked, was cold, uncaring and gave Cassian a hard time for the longest time. It was only when she was told of a problem by some of the other people there that she sort of warmed up to Cassian. She was there for the money and had no intention of being with him but even so she wasn't even nice to him for the longest time which made me sad for him because he was the nicest guy. He didn't understand her at all or why she was acting so cold towards him. They shared the same room, the same bed for days before she even warmed up to him and started talking to him. I didn't like how she treated him at all or how she acted to him when he had done nothing at all to deserve it.

But then some of the humans and aliens alike start working in secret for what they thought was a conspiracy or problems and they were all working together which brought Cassian and Ivy closer together and they actually started to get along better.  This series follows the rebellion and problems they find throughout the series so that is not resolved in this first book but I wouldn't call it a cliffhanger since it gets resolved throughout the series.

I give this book 3 out of 5 stars.
