Favorite Picture of the Week

Last month we had some rain come through and I saw some kids playing in this drainage ditch when there was rain water in it. I tried to get a couple of good pictures of it but I didn't want to walk into the rocks because they are slippery. But this drainage ditch is about 4 feet deep and there's a bunch of rocks in the bottom of it because the kids were in it and throwing rocks into it when it rained.

There's a metal grate on the bottom of it but the holes in the metal aren't large enough to let any of these rocks through. The water falls through into a large pipe that carries it to the drainage tunnels that are large enough to walk in. A lot of the homeless population live in the drainage tunnels and get swept away when it rains. My daughter and some of her friends have walked through the drainage tunnels as a hike when the weather is nice and there are no storms in the area. You have to take a flashlight with you because it's really dark. They said it's kinda like hiking through caves because you never know what you might come across.

But I thought it was crazy for the parents around here to be letting their small kids play inside this drainage ditch when it was filling up with water. I mean what if the metal grate on the bottom gave way and they fall into the pipe or something.

  1. Sounds they were living dangerously. Parents should monitor...always.

  5. I agree, it isn’t a good idea especially with small children. Hope the rest of the week is good for you!

  6. I'd never let my kid. How often do you hear about kids drowning. Kind of crazy, right?

  8. Until you've had kids and come to that magic point where you just need 5 minutes without someone screaming or poking you... I did much more dangerous things as a kid, and I think I'm better off for it. I think sometimes kids get too sheltered these days. It's not healthy.

    1. I have a kid, grandkid, nieces and nephews and I would never let them play in a ditch like this that could fall out from under them and drown. Just not good parenting.

  10. If its dangerous, kids will find it and not think anything of what could go wrong.
That's neat about your daughter and the older kids doing some exploring. I'm pretty sure that would have been me at that age, too. :)

    1. Me too. Then they have all kinds of lame excuses about how kids need to be kids and parents need to let go a little. No, you need to watch your damn kids.

  12. Doesn't seem safe at all for the kids to be playing near it. Some parents need a clue.

  13. I agree, that doesn't safe to me.

  14. I certainly wouldn't let my son play in there, although it sounds like something he would enjoy getting into. Too dangerous.
