Flowering Palm Tree's

Did you know that palm tree's sprout flowers once a year for a couple of weeks? I've seen it happen but never was in time to see the flower stalks sprouting from the leaf axils. They sprout so fast that it's easy to miss the tubular sprouts before they flower.

I circled some of the tubular flower stalks so you can see what I'm talking about. Most of the palm tree's around here have them and within a day or so start sprouting flowers. Some flowers you can see already.

The flower stalks look different from the palm tree fronds *leafs* so it was easy to spot the flowers coming.

Some of the flowers are either bright yellow like these or more of a whitish yellow.

These ones are more of the lighter whitish color.

There's a lot more white flowers than there are yellow flowers on these tree's.

Some of the flowers that sprouted are bright yellow. I'm not sure what the difference is. But so many flowers are on these palm tree's right now and the bee's are everywhere. Once the flowers sprouted from the flower stalks I don't walk under them for a couple of weeks until the flowers and bee's are gone.

I thought it was kinda cool and thought you guys would too. See, I found more flowers. lol

  2. Hi, Mary!

Your post illustrates that if you go looking for beauty in this world, you are likely to find it in abundance. It was a pleasure to view these examples of nature's handiwork on palms near you. There are 20 varieties of palms here in the various growing zones of Florida. We have scrub palmetto on our property for ground cover. I admit that when I'm out and about, I don't study the varieties of native palms carefully enough to observe those tubular stalks and flowers. I will need to look up more often because I might be missing some pretty sights.

Thanks for the lesson about flowering palm trees in your region, dear friend Mary. Have a safe and happy weekend!

  4. We had a lot of palm trees on Skidaway. I loved listening to them rustle in the wind. Thanks for sharing your insights. I kind of miss Palms (but I don't miss the humidity).

    1. I can understand that. We don't get humidity too often here but when we do I hate it.

  6. Being in Florida I see them all the time. Funny though, I've never thought of them as flowers, just part of the palm.

    1. That's interesting. I see bee's all over the flower parts so I see them as flowers. They are pretty even if I can't see them very well.

  15. Wow! I did not know this, thanks for sharing your photos, too. It's like when I found out pineapples didn't grow on trees a few years back. 😯

  20. I had no idea about this. We’ve only seen palm trees when we travel in Cali, Nevada, and Florida, but they never had flowers on them while we saw them. So cool!

  21. One of the Two of mine is Flowering right now. The Palm Tree butchers... I mean, Trimmers, come out in force about now to alleviate some residents of having to let the Palms Flower... but they trim the poor things within an inch of their lives. I like mine full and natural, we have the really tall slender trunk Palms in our Front acreage, two of them, I Love them!

    1. We have some of the really tall ones too. The trimmers haven't come out in a while to trim these.
