Apartment Life #343

This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that go on in and around my apartment complex in the past 25 years that we've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 25 years here in a weekly blog post.

Just down the street there was a bad car crash and they had the street blocked off and had police and emergency vehicles out there. I couldn't find a news article about it so I have no idea if anyone was badly hurt.
---

I heard another rumor that drug dealer has to be out by the 10th. But I have no idea if it's true or not. He doesn't seem to be packing anything up so I have a feeling the rumor is false.

----

Thursday night right after 10pm my daughter and I heard a loud explosion and my daughter looked on her security camera and the apartment directly across from me was on fire. So I called 911 real fast and my daughter went outside. They got here in just a couple of minutes. They got one dog out right away, my daughter chased him down the street and we brought him inside.

Several people saw the woman who lives there jump out of the bedroom window and she was taken to the hospital. The firemen got the other dog out and they were both fine. The guy who lives there was not home but he was outside a little while later. The previous owner of the dog we had in our apartment came looking to see if he was ok and we gave him to the guy. Later on we saw the guy that lives there with both of his dogs.

The apartment was a hoarding situation so they brought out a bunch of stuff while fighting the fire. The couch was a total loss.

They got the fire out really fast and it didn't spread to other apartments, the dogs are fine, the guy that lives there is fine and the woman got taken to the hospital, but I saw her the next day and she is fine. They evacuated that entire building, but they didn't make my building evacuate.

The police were here until almost 2am bagging evidence and taking pictures of stuff in the apartment. We heard them say there were 2 unregistered, loaded hand guns and a loaded shotgun that we saw sitting outside the door.  They also said they found drug paraphernalia. They also had a large propane tank inside their apartment so I'm glad that didn't explode or catch fire.

The next day the the couple came back and had maintenance open the apartment for them. The Red Cross was here in case they needed a place to stay but the manager moved them into another apartment building, 2 buildings away from mine. I asked the guy what exploded and he said he had a drone battery charging and that's what exploded. I had thought it was maybe a meth lab but since the police didn't tape off his apartment and tell him he couldn't go back inside, I'm thinking that wasn't what the explosion was.

We heard him saying that the police told him he was going to get fined for the unregistered guns. I don't know about the supposed drug paraphernalia they found.

There was so much stuff inside that apartment they pulled the door completely off and was bringing stuff outside just so they could get inside the apartment.

My entire street was filled with emergency vehicles for hours. I've never seen that many emergency vehicles at once.

This is what it looked like the next morning. At least they were all fine and so were the dogs and the fire didn't spread. That was a really scary situation though. Having an apartment fire is one of my biggest fears.

The high this week was 65F/18C
The low this week was 32F/0C

So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

  1. Geeeeshhh that's horrifying. There was a fire in an apartment where we lived just a couple doors down. We were grateful that no one was hurt and the fire didn't spread. That was one of my biggest fears, too. I'm glad everyone in your family is okay!

  2. How dreadful. I am very glad that neither the dogs nor the people were hurt, but...

  3. Never a dull moment. That's strange that a battery would just explode, especially with a big enough explosion that it sounded loud to you. Maybe it was defective.

    1. So was I. I was surprised the fire didn't spread to the other apartments. But the fire dept got here really fast.

  7. Hi, Mary!

You had a few quiet weeks recently, but this past week was literally explosive. It's unsettling to know that you, your daughter and my buddy Falcor were practically at Ground Zero, very close to the inferno, but thankfully no one in your household was harmed, your apartment was spared and, miraculously, the dogs and people in the unit where the explosion and fire took place escaped unharmed as well. I'd say they are all very lucky considering the alarming scenes you captured on video.

That plus a serious car crash not far from your home made this the most eventful week by far in recent memory.

I wish you a safe happy and more restful week ahead, dear friend Mary!

  9. We already talked about the fire on Twitter, but back then we all thought it was a meth lab situation LOL. The apartment people are a walking hazard though...guns, drugs, and an explosive drone battery? for real?

I'm glad you weren't affected by the fire, but it must have been scary...and noisy, what with all the commotion. Seriously, does your family ever get any sleep?

    You're having 0C already ?!? Yikes 🥶.

  10. Wow, I've seen several fires but never people running from the,. Glad the woman got out. Wondering if there is ever anything festive going on where you live.

  11. Batteries should be given proper attention, as they could explode. Don't charge them at night, when people are asleep !

  12. As if hoarding wasn't enough of a hazard, adding dogs, drug paraphernalia, firearms, propane tank, drone battery. Sounds like the couple was an accident waiting to happen and could have taken everyone down with them. I'm surprised the building owner gave them another unit to start hoarding all over again.

  15. Scary about that fire! I'm glad no one got hurt and that it didn't spread to any of the other apartments.

  16. Although it often seems like there's never a dull moment where you live, it seems like lately it's been intensified. I hope no one was hurt in the car accident. It seems like I am always hearing about car accidents around here lately. But then, maybe there seem to be more because I'm more aware since my own car accident in October.

I am so glad the explosion and fire wasn't worse. How scary!

  17. I'm glad the dogs were okay and moving them 2 buildings away from you sounds like pretty good news.

  18. Holy crap THAT'S too close to home! I'm glad everyone's alright though. Scary for those dogs- and the people too, obvs.

  19. That's enough for a year. I remember once, when living in an apartment and in my mid-20s, I came home for lunch. There was a fire in another building, between me and the exit, so I had an extra long lunch break as hoses covered the driveway.

  21. Wow, a fire in the building opposite is scary. Good that they stopped the fire spreading any further. Luckily I don't have any drones to charge!

  22. Wow! How scary. I'm so glad everyone and dogs are okay. Thank goodness it didn't spread. I hope this week is a bit calmer for you. We decorated the house for Christmas.

  23. Hope that drug dealer gets pushed out. Crossing my fingers. What a scary situation with the fire! Yes, I would imagine that a hoarding situation would be dangerous and be a fire hazard. Yes, fires scare me too! Especially out here in Northern California! Glad to hear everyone is safe and the dogs were okay. I feel so terrible when I hear an animal dies, trapped in a fire. How awful!

  25. Honestly, that fire is why I refuse to live anywhere that I share a wall with strangers. I lived in a 4 family row home in my early 20s and was constantly afraid of all the units catching on fire from one of the residents. That, and I could hear the lady next door getting it on with various lovers at 5am every morning, as well as smelling her stinky drugs coming in through the vent system.

  26. Terrifying! I Googled and those batteries do explode and sometimes catch on fire just sitting on a shelf! I'm kinda glad I didn't work for our company the year our boss gave everyone a drone for Christmas. lol So glad the doggies got out ok!
