Apartment Life #355

This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell  Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that go on in and around my apartment complex in the past 25 years that we've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 25 years here in a weekly blog post.

When my daughter got on the bus to go to work on Monday, she spotted police just down the street. They had someone sitting on the sidewalk but I have no idea what was going on.

This street is just around the corner from us so it was close. Maybe just a traffic stop though.

The homeless druggies strike again. This apartment became vacant and right away I started seeing the druggies coming and going from the apartment like they lived there. Last Monday morning maintenance went in and kicked them all out and I thought that would be the end of it for a while but the very next night they broke out the bedroom window and was able to get it open and climb in. They came and went for a few days until maintenance once again went in and kicked them out. Then maintenance fixed the broken window and that night as I was outside with Falcor I watched a couple of druggies trying to break into the door. So I stood there and made sure they knew I was watching them. They stopped and walked around the back where the fixed window was. So I took out the trash and made sure they saw me watching them. They didn't break into the apartment that night. So at least that's something, Maintenance should call the police when they find people have broken in but they won't and if I call, the police will do nothing, They won't even make them leave because there is no apartment manager on property to tell them that they don't live there. It's ridiculous.

I'm sure you all remember the apartment fire across from my apartment that happened back on December 4th? Well this place just hired a company to come out and clear out the apartment. The guy that lived there was a hoarder and the place is packed.

They set up a plastic barrier around the door, looked almost like hazmat containment. My brother (retired firefighter) said they did this because these old apartments have asbestos. That makes sense.

The high this week was 70F/21C
The low this week was 34F/1C

So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell  Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

  1. Hi, Mary!

You live in a land of a thousand frustrations, dear friend, a neighborhood where the same problems exist month after month and year after year with no permanent solutions found. It's a ridiculous cycle for them to fix broken windows in a vacant apartment knowing full well that, in no time, the homeless will break in again and occupy the unit. I keep thinking that many of these problems would go away if the drug dealer moved out or was evicted. As you reported before, efforts are being made behind the scenes to bring about that outcome, and it can't come soon enough.

You are bold for standing there watching those people as they plotted to break into the vacant apartment. No doubt your presence at the scene acted as a deterrent but, as they say... you gotta sleep sometime.

It's also worrisome that the apartments in your complex might contain asbestos. As they work to clear out the unit across from you that was previously inhabited by a pack rat, they will surely encounter "the funk of 40,000 years."

Have a safe and happy week, dear friend Mary!

    1. You would think they would do something different instead of constantly fixing broken windows. I think lot of the problems withh go away once drug dealer is gone.

  3. It’s mind boggling that the apartment owners don’t mind having to pay the cost of replacing windows and doors that get busted up. You’d think they’d be proactive.

  4. Yes, I heard this happens a lot near Vegas, where the homeless get into Vacant homes. They need stricter laws on these types of thngs and maybe more alarms and such.

    1. If maintenance would just call the police and let them know they will be arrested for doing this it might help.

  5. Management should hire you and Falcor as security because of the way you can so easily frighten druggies away by yelling at them, like last week or, this time, just standing there giving them the eye, LOL.

  6. Druggies, the bane of modern life. No government seems capable of sorting out the drugs crisis. Drug dealers seem to get bolder and bolder. I expect you've heard of cuckooing, which is an increasing problem in the UK.

    1. Yes, they really are the bane of having to live most places.

  7. That is ridiculous. I'm surprised actually that maintenance even kicked them out. that could get ugly. Course the druggies probably just want to slink away and come back when no one looking.

    1. Yes it absolutely could. They do come back and break back in over the weekend because they know no one is here.

  8. OMG Girrrrl, that is really a difficult situation for all of you legal Tenants to have to Deal with all of the time as if you're the Apartment Security. Management probably realizes if they legally attempted to pursue this, it would incur costs that doesn't evict the Squatters, so they probably find it easier to do it themselves. They may even do what I've heard some Landlords resort to when they need to kick someone out, they offer them an incentive to leave, perhaps Money, which is still cheaper than a Legal Eviction and Court Costs.

    1. They have a 30 day no cause here in Nevada. They can give anyone a 30 day eviction notice and as long as they don't try to fight it in court they can be locked out of their apartment in as little as 37 days. If they fight it in court they might get an extra 30 days. But the courts almost always side with the landlord and the constable will come and make you leave and change the locks.

  9. It's sad that the break-ins just keep happening...but if the owners of the apartment don't care nothing will happen.

  11. I can't believe the police don't do anything about these drug addicts just breaking in and squatting!

  13. It's too bad management didn't stick around after they reopened the office. Why did they even bother? 🤔

  14. We have real strict laws about kicking people out in Minnesota. Probably because it gets too cold in the winter. Hope your week turns out great.
