Apartment Life #345
This is a weekly blog post that I'm calling Apartment Hell Life. I've mentioned a few times some of the crazy things that have gone on in and around my apartment complex and in my neighborhood in the past 25 years that I've lived here and people keep telling me I should write a book. But instead of a book, I've decided to share the crazy things that have happened in and around my apartment complex in the last 25 years here in a weekly blog post.
On Monday, The fire department was back on my street, this time because one of the homeless people fell down a vertical manhole to the sewer and other homeless people called the fire department said that his leg was broken so they had to lower someone down the manhole to get this man out of there and get him help.
Some of the homeless people stay down in the sewer to keep warm when it's not raining and flooded. There's an extensive tunnel system under Las Vegas that homeless people use to stay out of the elements. The fire department was able to lower someone with a backboard to strap the man to it and hoist him out of there.
They put him on a stretcher and off to the ER he went. One of the homeless people said at least one leg was broken pretty badly.
All in all it took about 2 hours to get him out and for the fire department to pack up all the gear they used.
The high this week was 67F/19C
The low this week was 39F/3C
So that's it for this week's Apartment Hell Life! Be sure to come back next week for more.

Props to the fire department for pulling off that rescue—it’s sad that people actually live down in those tunnels. It’s heartbreaking they have to, but good to see them looking out for each other.
ReplyDeleteAt least they were looking out for each other.
DeleteThe previous comment says it all for me.
ReplyDeleteYes, I agree.
DeleteHe was lucky not to have broken his back, poor man.
ReplyDeleteI agree.
DeleteThat dude was very, very lucky.
ReplyDeleteYes he was.
DeleteWhat a terrible way to break a leg.
ReplyDeleteI felt so bad for him.
DeleteThat must have been a job. I’m glad the fire dept knew how to handle the situation.
ReplyDeleteI am too, they got it done.
DeleteWith the temps you're having already (3C to 19C??? 🥶), I'm not surprised homeless people are willing to risk breaking a leg in order to find shelter. I hope he can be patched up...
ReplyDeleteThere are a lot of homeless that live down in those tunnels.
DeleteThat poor man! I read a book once about the tunnels under Las Vegas...and it was good, I just can't remember what it was. ;D Hope you have a good week this week, Mary.
ReplyDeleteYes, those tunnels are well documented.
DeleteWOW, we didn't know you had sewar people in Vegas.
ReplyDeleteYes, there are a lot of people living down there.
DeleteThat's good that he got help and hopefully recover.
ReplyDeleteHopefully he's alright. I haven't seen him back here since.
DeletePoor homeless man!
ReplyDeleteAt least he got help.
DeleteOh how sad for him. And what a sad way of life. When we visited LV, it looks so glittering and glamorous yet here is that other side of life.
ReplyDeleteThe glitz and glamour is just a small part of Vegas. There are so many homeless and poor people in this city.
DeleteThat is so sad. How wonderful to have first responders who care. They are so good to those who are in dire straits.
ReplyDeleteYes, they got him out of there pretty fast for the situation he was in.
DeleteSo sorry to hear what happened to this poor homeless man. He will have some time in hospital but what after.
ReplyDeleteHe'll be back around here most likely.
DeleteOh dear ... what a terrible way to break a leg.
ReplyDeletePleased he got help and I do hope he recovers.
All the best Jan
Hopefully he's alright.
DeleteI've heard about the unhoused living in the Las Vegas sewers, and what a terrible way to have to live.
ReplyDeleteYes, it is.
DeleteOH my goodness. I hope he is able to get the care he needs to recover. I hope you had a good Thanksgiving.
ReplyDeleteI did, thank you. Hopefully he's alright.
DeleteI can understand why they'd want to get out of the elements with your temps dropping to 39 degrees at night. Thank goodness for the firemen and all they do! Hope you had a wonderful long holiday weekend, Mary!
ReplyDeleteI can understand it too.
DeleteI'm glad they were able to get him out. Yikes. But, sewer tunnels are probably better than some of the other options out there, so...
ReplyDeleteYeah, at least it's probably warmer down there. I've seen smoke coming from the manholes so I know they start little fires down there.
DeleteI'm glad that the man was able to be rescued, but I shudder to think how much the rescue manpower cost.
ReplyDeleteProbably a lot.
DeletePoor man, be bad enough being homeless then break a leg.
ReplyDeleteYes, just compounding his problems.
DeleteCrazy goings ons there in your neighborhood!
ReplyDeleteWe put our tree up the day after Thanksgiving, we have always had green ones.
There's always something going on around here
DeleteWow, so how did he fall down the manhole? Was the manhole cover left off? Poor guy.
ReplyDeleteThe homeless people remove the manholes so he was climbing down it and he fell.
DeleteNot the best place to get a broken leg
ReplyDeleteNope.
