Favorite Pictures of the Week

My daughter found something interesting on Google Maps. You can go back in time and see what your street looked like. I've been here in my apartment since 1998, that's 27 years. And in that time this street has changed a lot. So this is what it looked like back in 2009. It looked like this for a long time before this too.  Lots of green bushes, tree's and this place was taken care of. All of these pictures are courtesy of Google Maps.

2011

2013 Now watch as things start to change because the owner of my property passed away, the property was passed to his grandkids and they sold my apartment complex to someone who doesn't care about anything but money,

2014

2015 The bushes are almost all gone. And a lot of the trees are gone.

2019 This made me smile because The Google Maps car caught my late husband standing in our alley. He's at the end in the yellow shirt. He was always standing out there with his friends.

2022 All the trees and bushes are gone now.

2025 This is what it looks like now. That's some change isn't it? It was so nice when we first moved in here. Now it looks terrible.

  1. That is one hell of a depressing change. It must make the place less comfortable too. Trees and bushes help cool down an area in hot weather. (Metal trees don't do that, of course.)

27 years is a long time to be in one apartment. I thought I'd been in mine a long time at 13 years.

  2. Trees and shrubs make such a difference to everything. It's such a shame they've gone.

  3. What a terrible shame. Looked so nice once.
Twenty-seven years is a long time in an apartment. Our apartments around here start around $1500 and I pay less than half of that for our mortgage, so I can't imagine spending that much every month on an apartment.

    1. The apartments around here are high priced too. That's one of the reasons we have stayed so long in this one because it's more affordable.

  4. You have documented the sad changes of your home. I suspect that would be true of many places in my town, too, as ownership of property has shifted from people who cared to people who don't.

  8. What a shame to let all those lovely green shrubs and bushes be gone now. They are good for enjoying seeing and for the air. But you have this internet photo of your hubby! What luck daughter found that.

  9. I heard about the google maps thing early in the summer, so I looked up all the places my parents lived, hoping to catch a glimpse of my Dad, but no luck. I’m so glad you found Ken in one of the pictures!

  11. That's such a fascinating but sad journey to take back through time on Google Maps, it really shows how much your street has changed, doesn't it? It was so lovely when all those green bushes and trees were there. It's heartbreaking to see the neglect once the property changed hands, just caring about money really shows in the final picture. But the photo of your late husband, standing in the alley in his yellow shirt, that's a beautiful moment captured forever, a true treasure.

  15. I drive by our old rental house and the apartment sometimes to see how they're being kept up. I didn't realize Google did that. Yes, sad to see all your trees gone. Fun you caught a glimpse of Ken!

    1. I miss all the bushes and trees. It looked so much nicer back when management cared. It was a surprise to see Ken in there.

  16. Oh, that's very sad. The previous owner clearly cared about the neighborhood. Greed is a terrible motivator.

  17. It looks completely different.

  18. Those trees and bushes sure did a lot of difference, especially since the apartment lot looks very basic. I wonder if it really was so expensive to take care of them...

What a nice surprise for you to find a photo with Ken in it.

    1. All they had to do was maintain the sprinkler system and have them trimmed once in a while. It was nice to find a surprise picture of Ken in there.

  20. That is a scary thing about rentals. Something happens to the landlord and things go down the toilet. I did not know Google maps had this feature. It’s very tempting to look at where I grew up and some other places that I’ve lived and see changes over the years. Alana ramblinwitham.blogspot.com

  21. It's sad to see how people relate to the changes. Obviously the owners, like you said, just want the money. Greedy people everywhere. :(

  24. Ugh, what a change, and definitely not for the better. I'll have to go look up ours. We've lived here for 18 years. I know before we moved in there was a huge pine tree next to our house that was cut down. I'm kind of glad it's gone though because those damn needles get everywhere in the fall months. But I bet it looked pretty while it was up.

  27. I hope google will do maping again, because they did it here twenty years ago and my house is not renovated in Google Maps LOL as we painted it after that, after we have moved in.

  28. I agree, it looked much nicer in 2009. Why do people rip down attractive trees and bushes?

    1. The sprinkler system dried out and cracked and stopped working. So instead of fixing it, they let the trees and bushes die and ripped them out.
