1950's Baby Formula Recipe

My grandma used to tell me back when she had my mom, she made her formula for her because my mom was a preemie and was really small. I remember the recipe my grandma used to tell me about but with the internet today, I wanted to see if I could find it and I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to. Back when I was a kid, I thought she just came up with this baby formula recipe on her own but it turns out it was a well known recipe to mother's back then.

Now with the baby formula shortage going on, I thought I would post this in case anyone wanted to try it. It worked for my mom who was a preemie and weighed only 5lbs when she was born. And in case you're wondering I found the recipe here

13oz. Evaporated milk
20oz. water
2tsp. Karo Syrup

Heat all ingredients together and let cool, then pour into bottles.

Of course today's formula is probably better and breastfeeding is best but this is a good backup in case someone needs it. It worked for my mom and she turned out just fine.

  2. Funny how all the doctors are screaming don't make your own or one from the Internet - but they aren't providing an alternative if you've got no options! Dumb.

    1. I know. What do they expect people to do?

  3. Fascinating, Mary! I did wonder what people did long ago when they weren’t able to breastfeed. I agree with Alex about the doctor warnings. So dumb! I crack up at some of the stuff my daughter tells me about the latest baby recommendations. Exact opposite of what we were told to do 25 years ago!

    1. Things change over time but if it was good enough back then, I'm sure it still is.

  4. Shortage in an item for babies/kids always causes worry and even panic.

  5. This is great! The old ways were the best ways IMO. I'm posting this formula on Instagram.

  8. This baby formula shortage is troubling! I agree, breast feeding is the best, and it's what I did, but I guess it's not always possible for a mom that has to work. This is a great thing to know if you have no other options. Our world has been so changed and weird since Covid!

    1. Sometimes the mother can't produce enough milk too.

  9. My grandma used to feed my post WW2 father just with roux (flour fried on some pig's fat LOL) and the doctor thought he was year and a half old when he was just about six months LOL

    1. Now that's a first. I've never heard of that one. I'm sure they had to make due with what they had on hand.

  10. I didn't know about the Karo stuff! We had to give my kiddo the other stuff because she couldn't handle the formula... too much iron. Her father was like that when he was a baby.

This is perfect to share now with the shortage going on!
